Ham radio, schmam radio.? There are other radio services besides ham.? Cool!? Let’s exercise how to use those during public service events!

The Arizona Emergency Net – Maricopa meets on Monday nights.? But some topics just need hands-on exercise to master the material.? So, on some months, we’ll conduct hands-on, practical training on a Saturday morning.? We’ll share the same park as the RUSS (Radios Under Sun Shade) hams.

Next Saturday, if we have enough turnout, we’ll simulate a half marathon public service event in the park.? And we’ll use FRS radios to keep in touch with our rest stop captains, the race director, and other non-hams.? That’s when FRS radios really shine!? Let’s see what works and what doesn’t.

So, next Saturday, 8 Jan, bring all your FRS/GMRS blister-pack radios and your ham dual-band HT to the exercise site in the East Valley, location to be announced.

Don’t have a dual-band HT?? I have an assignment for you!? Come anyway.? You’ll enjoy it.

If you don’t have FRS/GMRS radios, come anyway.? We’ll have extra radios you can borrow.? Then you can decide whether to get some of your own.

We’ll finish our Saturday exercise by lunch time.? And we just might find a lunch spot to go to together, optional.

And then two weeks later, we’ll review what we learned on the Monday night net with everyone who couldn’t attend.

PREPARATION:

1.????? Clear your calendar for next Saturday, 8 Jan, 10am to about noon.

2.????? Let me know you’re coming.? E-mail me at Mike.J.Pulley@... BY THURSDAY NOON.?
I’ll get some information from you, tell you how to prepare, and tell you where the park is.

3.????? Find your FRS/GMRS radios.? Make sure they have fresh batteries.? Bring at least 2, if you have them.?
Bring more, if you can; someone might need to borrow a pair.

4.????? Find the user’s manual for your FRS/GMRS radios.? If you can’t find it, print one off the web.? (Always bring the manual for your radios in the field.)

Let’s meet in the park, exercise with radios we don’t normally use, and just maybe learn something.? Oh yeah, and let’s have fun!
