It officially began on Sunday, August 9th 2020 at 5 PM local time. This will be the official day and time of this weekly net. Saturday, August 21st, is the next "Radios At Home!"
Happy Friday Everyone! Tomorrow morning, Saturday, August 21st, is the next "Radios At Home!" It will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.. We will be monitoring TWO frequencies in order to give more operators the chance to make contacts on the air. We will plan on using 146.460 with a 77.0 Hz tone encoded (as has been historically used for this event.) In addition, we will also try to use 446.000 (which also happens to be the 70 cm National Calling Frequency.) No tone will be required on that frequency. True dual-band radios should be able to monitor both frequencies at once. Two radios, of course, will do the trick as well. The function is the same as ...the whole point is to get on the air. But instead of going out into the sweltering heat, we will get to operate from the comfort of our own AC-cooled homes. We also highly encourage the use of alternative means of power while participating in order to increase one's own skills in emergency communications. Also, if you find yourselves in a lengthy conversation, please be considerate of others participating in Radios At Home and please QSY to another frequency. The use of multiple frequencies is also an important emergency communications skill that we also hope to encourage during this event. Overall, the most important thing is to have fun! Hope to hear you on the air tomorrow! -K7ZAE |

Malicious Interference on Ocotillo Repeater
Malicious Interference on Ocotillo Repeater It is one or more children that have gotten a hold of Daddy's or Mommy's Boefeng or similar radio. I know that because they turned on the signalling tone or orange button alarm. There has been some malicious interference on the Ocotillo repeater today beginning at 1PM or so. As always, DO NOT ENGAGE any malicious transmission on the air. Best, and correct practice, is to ignore the interference and NEVER to acknowledge it. |

Re: QCECG Sunday net
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýGreetings!
?
I just listened to the recording of last night¡¯s session ¨C sorry I missed
it! (Had a family thing...)
?
It sounded like an excellent exercise, and I¡¯m sure it provided good
insight for everyone listening, especially those who have not been involved in
emergency operations.
?
For what it¡¯s worth (you know what they say about opinions...), I have a
personal observation that I used to emphasize to my crews:
?
?
??? The time to order a resource is the very first
time one thinks he/she might need it.
?
?
New commanders (or those in acting positions) often waffle about calling
for resources ¨C ¡°maybe I¡¯ll wait a little longer and see what happens...¡±.
?
Resources (e.g. fire engines) can always be turned around, but no amount of
¡°shoulda/coulda/woulda¡± will get them there any sooner when things turn to bat
guano and you need them there now!
?
And if, in retrospect, you realize that your request was overly-cautious,
send over a cut gallon of Baskin-Robbins and all will be forgiven.
?
?
Before I knew that I would miss the session, I wanted to include an
announcement about the annual Perseid meteor shower.
?
The shower lasts about a week, but the peak is predicted to occur on
Wednesday evening / Thursday morning and/or Thursday evening / Friday morning.
?
The Moon sets at 8:30 pm local time on Thursday (about the same time
Perseus is rising in the northeast), so it won¡¯t wash out the sky.
Unfortunately, it¡¯s expected to be cloudy, and the light pollution here is
pretty bad.
?
The best viewing is usually after midnight, when the part of the earth on
which we are standing rotates into the path of the particle stream.
?
The radiant (point in the sky from which the meteors appear to originate)
will be in the northeastern sky (near the Double Cluster in Perseus, a superb
binocular object), but meteors will appear in all quadrants.
