Radios at Home

From:? K7ZAE

Hello Fellow Ham Enthusiasts!

Today, Saturday, September 18th, is the final "Radios At Home" for the year!

It will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m..

We will be monitoring TWO frequencies in order to give more operators the chance to make contacts on the air. We will plan on using 146.460 with a 77.0 Hz tone encoded (as has been historically used for this event.) In addition, we will also try to use 446.000 (which also happens to be the 70 cm National Calling Frequency.) No tone will be required on that frequency. True dual-band radios should be able to monitor both frequencies at once. Two radios, of course, will do the trick as well.

The function is the same as RUSS...the whole point is to get on the air. But instead of going out into the sweltering heat, we will get to operate from the comfort of our own AC-cooled homes. We also highly encourage the use of alternative means of power while participating in order to increase one's own skills in emergency communications.

Also, if you find yourselves in a lengthy conversation, please be considerate of others participating in Radios At Home and please QSY to another frequency. The use of multiple frequencies is also an important emergency communications skill that we also hope to encourage during this event.

Overall, the most important thing is to have fun!

Hope to hear you on the air tomorrow!

-K7ZAE

New Net in the Valley

Hi Folks,

There will be a new net in the Valley soon - "Chandler Social Net"

Here is the description from the :

"Gary - KI7PBR, Steve - KJ7UKA, and Larry - K7XWZ are starting a new NET on Wednesday Nights (first one begins on Sept 29th, 2021) at 8pm on the MARCA 443.050 + pl100 repeater on South Mountain.
?
It will simply be an OPEN NET for all hams in the Valley. We will start to track regular check-ins and maybe do some sort of roll call at some point but initially it will be a check-in type net. We may do a "topic" once in a while or a weekly question. We'll see where it goes."

Gary, Steve, and Larry will rotate Net Control Operator duties.

Regards,

Joe, N2QOJ

International Space Station Visible Tonight (7 minutes!)

International Space Station Visible Tonight (7 minutes!)

Folks - Good news!
Another opportunity to spot the International Space Station this evening as it passes over our area in Arizona. It should be a great pass and hopefully the clouds will be minimal. It will pass almost directly overhead!
Treat your family and friends to a viewing of the International Space Station tonight. I find that even the most non-technical family member or friend gets a kick out of seeing the station as it moves across the sky at 17,150 MPH - that's 4.76 miles per second - and about 250 miles above us.
If you are an amateur radio operator, take the opportunity to relate how us hams can communicate directly with the ISS or through one of its transponders. The ISS will be visible for 7 minutes and should be a good viewing and becomes visible directly from the Southwest and disappears towards the Northeast.

Time: Thu Sep 16 7:30 PM
Visible: 7 min
Max Height: 61¡ã
Appears: 10¡ã above SW (from 225 degrees)
Disappears: 10¡ã above NE (toward 45 degrees)
I've also attached an illustration that will help you determine how to use this information. You can watch and track the station in advance at this link:
And, something new! I've attached a chart of the actual pass.
Remember, these times are based on a viewing site from the Mesa area (and within 50 miles). If you would like to generate times from your specific city or town, visit this link and follow the instructions. If your specific city or town isn¡¯t listed, pick the closest one:
The space station is visible for at least a 50 mile (80 km) radius around each of the listed locations.
If you are an amateur radio operator, listen in (or work) on these frequencies:
Voice and SSTV Downlink: 145.80 (Worldwide)
Voice Uplink: 144.49 for ITU Regions 2 and 3
VHF Packet Uplink and Downlink: 145.825 (Worldwide) - easiest to hear
UHF Packet Uplink and Downlink: 437.550
UHF/VHF Repeater Uplink: 145.990 (67Hz PL Tone)
UHF/VHF Repeater Downlink: 437.800
