Re: SSB TX
I tested again this evening. The gain setting did work with SSB on VHF. I started with the same setting as it was on the recording. There I got the feedback that there is overdrive. After reducing the gain, the overdrive was gone and audio was good. I did not test the cmp setting. I plan to get an USB SDR receiver. Then I can do some more testing and listen to the signal myself and record it. I have no other HF/SSB receiver. The test was done with my self made amplified mic though. What microphone are you using? I did a comparison with the original mic and my amp mic on VHF WFM yesterday. Even at same gain setting and the output of my amp mic adjusted to get the same volume, the original mic had some kind of cracking noises in the transmition while it was clean audio with my amp mic. I suspect that the Q900 does only work well with an amplified mic at this point. I have V4 with firmware 3.4.1 |
Re: SSB TX
开云体育I’m retired out of communications so maybe my bar is a little higher than some. I like the platform and the ability. It does not perform as good as they claim on receive so as just a receiver it would be worth the money if it did what they claim. Don’r know if anybody has checked ops on one. If it transmitted it would be a compromise but worth it because of it’s versatility. As just a receiver it is not worth it. The radio appears to have no ALC. (automatic limiting control) for SSB. So it over modulates, so to speak, on SSB. Not usable by anyone responsible. It is nasty on the air. RX is good in most places. If you test receiver integrity across the bands it is full of birdies and is subject to not making spec in places where it should.I feel these are all firmware issues and could be fixed if anybody over there cared? I am not computer literate so stuck here. Any input is welcome. After a month of waiting they just canceled my last order for one?? Does anybody have any good news? Dave

Re: About this site on October 4
开云体育I will note the Email change. No need for an apology, it’s just nice to find like minded people to talk with about the Q900. We used to do stuff like this on the air?I apologize for being such a luddite but the way it is. I’m like grandfather that just got a computer. I’ve sent my third one back and have a fourth on the way. I have a lab and can compare notes on specs and problems if anybody cares. 50uv at 900 megs and same at 300megs. Definitely doesn’t do what they say. I’d settle for one that just did what it was supposed to do in the ham bands! Haven’t found one yet. So any further postings will be on comlyone@... Any suggestions here would be greatly appreiated. I don’t have a what’s app. This is the first “forum” I’ve been on and not a stellar performance I suppose. I’m going out to finish putting up a 160 loop antenna. Thanks for the note. Cheers. Dave

About this site on October 4
I have been on 3 trips out of town in the past 2 weeks and haven’t been attentive here. I apologize.
I hope to get back up to speed on the recent WhatsApp posts, then implement early plans yet undone. I also will link with Kai to make communications about the Q900 more useful. Any suggestions or offers to help will be helpful. I use two email addresses here and prefer Q900 info by comlyone@...?and the other one for more personal communications. Posts directed to me on Groups.Io will be answered here.? More after I review recent posts here and on WhatsApp. George W9ZSJ |
Re: Amplified microphone project for the Q900
开云体育That’s the symptom of to much mic sensitivity. That’s adjustable in some radio’s. Mostly commercial. What I do with ham quality radios is pad down the mic. If you hold the mic at arms length it should not pic up anything. This one at arms length is just as bad as in my face. I chose their cheap little Pryne mic to modify but the procedure is the same. You can put felt or some material in front of and around the cartridge to clean up the audio a bit. I also ?turn down the mic. They multiplex the 5v a+ on the audio line with a padder resister across that line. I just add some resistance to it and voila! Mine won’t put out more than 2 watts with out flat toping and cutting the center line. (Over modulated) ?ALC problem. In my humble opinion.?Thank you for the response. My computer guy is going to help me install an older firmware today so will know if it is a radio thing or software. Since your running the same firmware it starting to look like I got another bad radio. I will order one more if that is the case and if it is bad I’m done with Q900’s. I need a small quantity of something like this for a group I’m doing some work for and they would be perfect if they worked. Dave

Re: Amplified microphone project for the Q900
I have the Q900 V4 with firmware 3.4.1. The MA X9814 mic amp in my project has AGC. I did not choose this one, but it was sent to me, because the other one was not available. Kai |
Re: SSB TX
开云体育Thank you. Problem is I can turn the mic gain all the way down and it doesn’t work. I’m trying to decide if it’s a broken radio or software issue. You just confirmed it. Your running the same firmware. This is my third broken one? I’m still going to try the old firmware before I send it back but I think you nailed it. I can adjust everything and padding down the mic audio does produce a great wave form but can’t run more than 1- 2 watts or it goes into distortion like the ALC is off.Dave

Re: Amplified microphone project for the Q900
开云体育And some deadening material around the pocket?for the mic. Yep did all that. I also changed out the electret mic for a Motorola that fits the hole almost perfect. The mic sens can be farther reduced on the Pryne mic by putting a resister across the resister labeled 222 in the audio path, or a variation of that. I’m happy with the mic audio for now. It’s the lack of ALC and adjustment there of that’s got me. I’m going to go back in time and load an earlier version of firmware. Which version do you have? Thank you for the schematic! I will print and put in my binder. Dave?

Re: Q900
开云体育I’m not on any other sites either. Don’t have the time to waste. Hi My software is 3.4.1. Yours is 3.40? When I put in the new firm ware to fix the SSB squelch issue it srewed up my TX on SSB and did not fix the squelch problem. A work in progress. Are you sure about your firmware? I’m going to load in an earlier version just waiting for enough info to choose wisely.Dave

Re: SSB TX
Strange... I did use SSB once on VHF with the same gain setting than on NFM (but with amplified mic and low gain). No overdrive there. Ihave V4 with 3.4.1. I would suggest to switch to the audio level meter (AUD) (short press power button). When the meter shows around 0 to 4dB I had good modulation. |
Re: Bluetooth and FT8cn
Well that's my problem. It's asking for the Q900's Bluetooth pin but I don't have it.

Re: SSB TX
开云体育Thank you. I’m way past that. I have firmware v3.4.1 When I loaded this to get ssb squelch I think the trouble began. Thanks for your response.Dave

Re: Q900
开云体育Thank you for your response. I’m way past the mic. I believe it is a firmware issue. I loaded the latest firmware ?V3.4.1. Squelch does work! If your neighbor is running a hundred watts! Hi hiWhat firmware are you running if I might ask? Dave
