Project Overview
The U.S. Agency
for International Development (USAID) OurFish OurFuture is a five-year
(2021-2026), regional project that addresses the social and ecological drivers
of Illegal, Unregulated, and Unreported (IUU) fishing including overfishing,
the inability to monitor illegal fishing, and weak compliance with fisheries
regulations. By addressing these problems, OFOF protects biodiversity and
supports local livelihoods, food security, and maritime security in the
Pacific. The project is a partnership between the University of Rhode Island,
Locally- Managed Marine Area Network, World Wildlife Fund, and the University
of the South Pacific. OFOF also collaborates closely with the Pacific Community
(SPC), other regional fishery organizations, non-governmental organizations,
civil society organizations, and relevant government authorities.
The Role
The
Communications Assistant will be essential to advancing the communications
efforts of the USAID OurFish OurFuture project. This role focuses on creating
social media content, crafting compelling stories, managing content collection
for our digital newsletter, and providing support for events and media
outreach. The position will be under contract with the University of Rhode
Island (URI) and will report to the Communications Specialist. The position
will be located at the University of Rhode Island Foreign Branch Office in
Suva, Fiji.
Key Responsibilities
1.??????
Social Media Management
- Collaborate
with project partners across the region to create compelling content for
submission to the USAID Pacific Islands team for their social media
platforms.
- Develop and
manage a social media calendar to ensure consistent program visibility.
- Maintain a
comprehensive media log to track published articles, interviews, and
mentions of OurFish OurFuture for reporting and analysis.

Storytelling and E-Newsletter Development
- Write and
publish a range of feature and human-interest stories for digital
platforms that highlight project results and impacts, and beneficiary
experiences.
- Produce
monthly updates and quarterly e-newsletters by leveraging existing content
and insights from social media, ensuring clear and compelling messaging.
- Create
multimedia stories, including audio and video formats, to effectively
convey project narratives.
- Collaborate
with partners to identify and develop stories that align with project
goals and resonate with target audiences.

Event Support and Media Relations
- Provide
logistical and communication support for national, and regional events.
- Coordinate the
production and inventory of OurFish OurFuture merchandise for events,
ensuring alignment with USAID Branding and Marking guidelines.
- Assist in the
preparation of press releases and media kits to enhance outreach efforts
and promote project activities.

4. Collaboration and Reporting
- Support the
Communications Specialist in ensuring consistent messaging and branding
across all channels.
- Assist in
preparing reports and presentations that summarize communication
activities and their impact.
- Collaborate
with the Communications Specialist to finalize Knowledge Productions and
ensure compliance with project and USAID branding and marking guidelines.
- Stay updated
on relevant issues in the fisheries sector to enhance communication
materials.
Key Selection Criteria
- Diploma or
progress toward a degree in journalism, communications, or a related field
from an accredited institution, or equivalent experience. Final-year
students will be considered if they have practical media or communications
experience.
- 1-3 years of
experience in journalism or communications.
- Ability to
prepare communication materials for diverse audiences under tight
deadlines.
- Basic
proficiency in video editing software (e.g., Adobe Premiere Pro, CapCut)
for social media content creation.
- Basic skills
in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop for designing simple publications like
newsletters.
- Knowledge of
using a DSLR camera to capture high-quality photos at events and in the
field.
- Strong written
and verbal communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex
information for non-experts.
- Understanding
of and ability to comply with the requirements of working in a
USAID-funded program, including adherence to USAID procedures and
policies.
- Ability to
work effectively in a multicultural, inclusive, and equitable environment.
- Authorized to
work in Fiji.
