JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Senior Conservation Advisor, Palau Program, Pacific Division, Asia
Pacific Region
SUPERVISOR: Dr. Andrew Smith, Palau Country Program Manager
LOCATION: Palau Field Office, Koror, Palau

SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Senior Conservation Advisor for the Palau Program, Pacific Division,
Asia Pacific Region, provides leadership, direction and services to the
terrestrial conservation components of the Conservancy and its partners'
activities in Palau. The Senior Conservation Advisor works very closely with
the Palau Country Program Manager and provides guidance and support to our
key partners in Palau. In particular, the position will focus on catalyzing
an alliance between organizations and agencies with terrestrial mandates to
further terrestrial conservation on Palau. The position will also provide
strategic direction and support to the Board, staff and in-coming Executive
Director of the Palau Conservation Society (PCS), TNC's primary partner in
Palau. The Senior Conservation Advisor will also assist the Palau Country
Program Manager with fundraising efforts to support our terrestrial activities.

It is envisaged that the position will eventually integrate the role of
Palau Country Program Manager.

The position will be based in Koror, Palau, and will involve some travel in
the immediate region and/or to the US for APR Team Meetings. The position
reports to the Palau Country Program Manager.

DUTIES:
1. Provide strategic and practical guidance to the terrestrial conservation
program within the Palau Country Program.
2. Build and maintain alliances between the relevant local, national and
regional government, non-government organizations and other agencies
involved with terrestrial conservation issues in Palau, focussing on
biodiversity conservation, development of sympathetic land-use policy and
planning and community level decision making.
3. Provide guidance, mentoring and training to the Board, staff, and
in-coming Executive Director of PCS on terrestrial conservation issues and
strategies in Palau.
4. In collaboration with the PCS Executive Director, help establish and
build the capacity of an effective "Terrestrial Team" within PCS to allow
them to meet their strategic goals.
5. Oversee the application of the Conservancy's "Five-S Framework for Site
Conservation" (for site conservation planning and measuring conservation
success) to Palau.
6. Assist the Palau Country Program Manager with fundraising efforts (short
and long-term) to support TNC's Palau country activities.
7. Assist, the Palau country manager with the implementation of other
conservation components of the Palau program
8. Assist with the co-ordination and integration of the Palau Program into
TNC's Asia Pacific regional forestry and capacity building thematic programs.
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
1. Tertiary degree in conservation biology, ecology, environmental planning,
or equivalent, with a minimum of 10 years of broad terrestrial biodiversity
conservation experience. Graduate degree desirable. Experience in senior
leadership and/or working as a program director strongly desired.
2. Demonstrated ability to provide strategic direction, leadership and
technical support to terrestrial conservation initiatives. Experience with
island and/or tropical ecosystems desirable. Past experience in working as a
terrestrial site manager or conservation practitioner at the field level
strongly desired. Proven success in multiple project management required.
3. Experience in capacity building and mentoring of partner organizations,
especially in the areas of technical/conservation matters, organizational
management, and fundraising.
4. Excellent and demonstrable interpersonal, intercultural, written and
verbal communication skills required.
5. A positive work attitude, and an ability and willingness to adapt to
different cultural perspectives, change, ambiguity, and comfortably handle
uncertainty.
6. Willingness to travel occasionally (~ 10%).
7. Commitment to The Nature Conservancy's mission and conservation approach.
