Steering Maintenance on PS 31

I noticed that last year Daryl Clark posted a file on Edson steering maintenance. I have two questions that I hoped the group might help with:
1. I am right that this file is talking of cable controlled steering and the standard on the PS 31 is rack and pinion steering?
2. Does the rack and pinion steering require regular maintenance? Has anyone in the group done or had done that maintenance? What does it entail?

Thanks.

LEWMAR WINCHES

WEST MARINE has a 2 for 1 sale on LEWMAR WINCHES (including the lovely bronze winches) purchased a pair of ST16's two years ago, tremendous deal!

Re: HOT WATER HEATER

I made the pilgrimage to the boat last week. The ISOTEMP SPA 15 looks like the best fit! The cabinet opening is 335mm (13.25 inches) wide; 385mm (15") high. The real determining factor though is the depth from back of cabinet face to where hull starts to rise above the hot water heater mounting platform: 540mm (21.5") . There is about 680mm (27") to storage cubby under the sink along the port hull under the galley. But there is about a 1 to 1.5 inch rise which makes it seem doubtful the SPA 20 could fit in that space due to length of the water heater.

Water heater on order! Will post photos of installation. (There are some nice you tube video of installation on other vessels)

In addition to the above formats, you may encounter those which are preceded by country codes such as "US" for the United states, "CN" for Canada, and "FR" for France. This means that the vessel was built for consumption in that respective country. You may also find hull numbers on two separate lines. In this case the second line is not typically considered as part of the hull number. State assigned hull numbers are not always consistent with federal standards.

Re: HOT WATER HEATER

Vicki,
Any chance you are near your boat? I measured the old Atwood and it's footprint; but did not measure how much further back the water heater could protrude past the original mounting position.
I will probably wait for spring to make a final decision, but right now it is between the SPA 15 and SPA 20 (4 and 5.3 gallon) water heaters by ISOTEMP.?
Did you leave the engine coolant hoses in? place for future replacement of the water tank?

Re: HOT WATER HEATER

My 2016 31' is installed the same as Daryl's, under the cabinet with the cutting board to the right of the sink. I also have the 2 drawer's above the heater.

Re: HOT WATER HEATER

My 1990 has the water heater installed beneath the galley drawer cabinet, there are 2 drawers and a slatted door just to the right of the sink, below the cutting board. Engine coolant hoses run into the bilge and up to the Yanmar 3GM30F.

I exchanged email with Pacific Seacraft and they have also installed them behind the wet locker in the head.?

Re: HOT WATER HEATER

The original owner of our boat never installed a water heater. We may do so in future. Is there a standard location where the factory installed water heaters? Have people considered alternative places? Is the key having access to the engine cooling system? Thanks.?

Re: HOT WATER HEATER

Here is the response I received from Pacific Seacraft:?

Daryl,

?

My name is Norman Hawn and I am part of the production staff here at Pacific Seacraft. We have a few people out of the office for various reasons and I have been tasked with communicating with people who have?questions for Thumper. I hate to hear the bad news about the hot water heater!

?

Traditionally for the 31's we have been defaulting to the Kuuma brand hot water heaters. They have several 6-gallon sizes that come in various configurations which hopefully will match up with your existing setup. If they don't there is a company called Seaward that might be worth checking as an honorable mention as well.

?

They are both available through West Marine or a?local chandlery. I'd give them a look over and see if any work for your particular needs. If you have any additional questions please don't hesitate to give me a shout.

?

Respectfully,?

?

Norman Hawn

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I checked West Marine and? the Kuuma water heater seems a tad large for the cabinet in Intuition:?

My measurements of the opening were 13.25 Wide and 13.5 high (this is the opening underneath the cabinet where the heater slides under the drawers)? - the depth seems reasonable.
As the dimensions listed are:?
13 3/4" Width x 13 5/8" Height x 19 3/4" Depth

West Marine does have the Seaward:?
And its dimensions (13x13x19
) should work and it is stainless steel.

Still like the idea of the built in mixer on the Isotemp SPA 15.

Re: HOT WATER HEATER

Hi Daryl. I've hull 55. On my list is to replace same in spring. I ripped my Atwood 4 years ago as when i bought boat, buildup made it unusable. Don't have my notes handy but remember thinking the Isotherm slim may be a good choice use in same cavity. Remember it was a bit pricey too. Am curious what water heater the PCS factory put in last 31 built or in their retrofits. Do? you know?
?

HOT WATER HEATER

The original Atwood Hot Water Heater came to a sudden end over the winter. Since purchasing Intuition, our 1990 Pacific Seacraft 31, decommissioning of the hot water tank has seemed an iffy proposition. The drain petcock is only 1/4 inch and seemed to be consistently plugged for decommissioning. As with most water heaters the sediment build up can be a killer. I had been able to eliminate enough of the water for the last 3 winter seasons, by blowing compressed air into the drain petcock and slowly getting the bulk of the water out. This year seemed to have gone well also, but upon visiting Intuition this past week, I found the water heater to have been frozen (as evidenced by the change in shape of the outer shell!

Atwood no longer makes marine hot water heaters. The original was approximately 13" x 13" x 16 inches deep; another 3 inches of electrical and hose fittings for the fresh water intake and hot water output took up space in front of the water tank; a few more inches in the rear for connection to the engine coolant / heat exchanger connections. So overall dimensions about 21 or so inches athwart-ship mounting space required.

There are several similar shaped / sized hot water heaters in production by Seward, Whale and others.

I found an ISOTEMP SPA 15 - which is 4 gallons and an ISOTEMP SPA 20 which is 5.3 gallons. The tank is 316 stainless steel and the outer shell is polypropylene.? Tank diameter is 12 inches; the smaller SPA 15 is 18' in length and the SPA 20 is 12' in diameter by 21.6 inches in length. They both come with a mixer, which is a nice safety feature and also maximizes the water in the tank , while reducing chances of scalding. We have often found the water so hot out of the Atwood, it could burn you without adding in some cold water.?

Wondering if anyone has had any experience with the ISOTEMP or other HOT WATER heaters?

John,?

I have to create a STRIPE account. Then I will be able to share the costs amongst the group. I hope we can get enough conversation going, I have owned both the Flicka and Dana. And the discussion groups have certainly been a blessing over the years - great group of passionate sailors.

I had a crack in the rudder on my Dana. It was caused by water intrusion at the top of the rudder post; then freeze/thaw cycles over the winter.

Routed out the area around the rudder post at the top and sealed with a life caulk.

Then epoxied the leading edge of the rudder.

Re: SITE ACTIVITY

Gorgeous boat Hank!? If you are on a PC, you should probably see a panel on the left side of the page several MENU items including PHOTOS.

Navigate to the PHOTOS page/section and you should see an existing Album for Emailed Photos, as well as several others.

At the top of the ALBUM page is a BUTTON with New Album. Press it and create an Album for your vessel. Then use the ADD PHOTOS button to upload photos to the site (there is a drag drop capability, as well as searching for photos on your computer.

Let me know if you have any questions, glad to help!

For now I will continue to pay for the site. Perhaps after the NEW YEAR, I will post a message to allow members to contribute to the next years costs.

Regards and thanks for? responding!

Welcome to the discussion group, nice to see Interlude is #50
Our old girls (boats) must have birthdays about the same time....

Please feel free to add you hull number and owners information to the database; create an Album for photos, etcetera!
Looking forward to hearing from everyone!?

Re: PSC 31 HULL #34

Andy,

I have had a number of tasks done by the factory since purchasing Intuition in 2017. Thumper and Steve have always been very responsive and great to put together a plan with.
What hull number is your PSC 31? Please do take a moment and enter owner information into the database setup for that purpose. I for one, would be interested in hearing your refit history.
