Whirring sound = torque tube

All I can say is Porsche dealers are uppity pricks, I mean 3 grand to fix a
torque tube? what dealer was it Barrier??? Akers seems to be pretty good i
had my 88 up there when the are went out and had the belt tensioned. Denny
said the air was electrical and sent me to another shop and charged me 100
for the adjustment...he has a pretty good rep with porsche owners in seattle.
And it really pissesd me off when they stick you with the labor and then have
the need for the triple mark up on the parts...

I got the verdict from the local Porsche Dealer, they said my whirring
sound coming from my shark is the torque tube.

They gave me the estimate, $2.9K which included 15 hours of labor. I asked
how much of that was the tube, $1.9K. I jokingly asked "Is that with or
without my PCA discount?" The (new) service manager wasn't too amused. I
then asked if it would be possible for me to supply a rebuilt tube, one
that had an extra bearing and would actually be better than the stock
replacement. He said he'd check and get back to me.

The phone message left with my secretary? "Can you pick your car up
tonight?, we have limited garage space."

I guess they don't install rebuilt tubes.

I picked my car up afterhours, at around 7:55pm. As I pulled up, there was
a salesman walking around my car, checking it out. As I stepped out of my
wife's 4Runner, I told him I'd give him a good deal on the car. He said
"Oh no, the car is beautiful, but these old All Wheel Drive models are very
difficult to sell."

I couldn't help but smile as I left "Old Shit for Brains" admiring my car
and went in to pay the $38 diagnostic fee to have the dealer tell me
something I already knew.
It would have been nice if the service manager was upfront with me when I
dropped off the car and basically told me "We have no intention on doing
the repair that you are asking an estimate for, unless your are stupid
enough to pay 4x the amount for parts, and double the time for labor". I
would have gladly paid my $38 then and there for his honesty and not wasted
everyone's time.

When I got back out to my shark, the salesman was still there. I fired it
up, whirring sound and all. The salesman got that weird expression like he
had just swallowed something distasteful while being constipated. I rolled
down my window, and piped up to the salesman, "front wheel drive is out,
I'm gonna fix it myself", and pulled out.

I'm going to kick around where I go from here. The shark drags are on the
25th, and I don't think I could pass tech with the whirring sound. I guess
I could tell them I've got a gear drive or something. I really want to do
the repair myself, but I don't think I could complete it in two weeks time.
So, if I want to drag race, I need to take it up to Seattle and pay a
reasonable price for the repair. Decisions, decisions.

If I'm lucky, when I go to check the crank end play in the bell housing
this weekend, the sound may go away. Ray Wach had stated his shark made a
similar noise until he released the static load at the flexplate. I'll
keep my fingers crossed.

Thanks for listening,

Hi Adam,

Sorry to hear about your tube. Do you really think they would fail
you during the tech inspection for the drag day. I've never been
through one but didn't think they would care if your car made
some odd noise (just tell them it's a supercharger ;-0).
Im sure the PCA inspections are pretty rigorous, What did they do
for
yours?

Anyway, I'm sure if you offer some beer or something, you could
cajole some of the locals to pop over and give you a hand. Let me
know if I can help.

Last time I went to the drags they weren't checking that tightly about the running condtion of your car.

Just that it APPEARED to be safe and wasn't leaking fluids.

Adam,

It's too bad that Tom no longer has a 2nd shark to share for the shark
drags! (You'd have to check the tires first, anyway. ;-) Wow. $1,400
profit on a $500 torque tube!

BTW, there were still some pleasant sights at the DE this weekend, though
short a couple 928's. A few 911 turbos pouring it on coming into the front
straight with *real pronounced* lift-and-squat as they upshifted <grunt>.
What a garish sound they make! And a 996 or two going by whisper-quiet.

Curt

Look out Adam, Tom's just casting about for beer. I'll make you a heck of

Adam,

Boy you sure know how to pick the timing for these things! The aftermarket
tube that you refer to, is it the Devek piece? If I ever have to do a torque
tube replacement, I would give serious consideration to the Devek part.

Hope you can get it back in working order before the drags.

I think I can get the shark up high enough in my garage, and with it at home
I won't feel rushed.

Adam, I can schedule to use one of the bays with a hydraulic lift on post
if
you want.

Actually both Devek and 928 Int'l rebuild their A/T tubes with the extra
(third) bearing. As far as my timing goes, Yeah I know.

I'm going to put the shark up in the air tonight and see what I can see.

Adam,

Boy you sure know how to pick the timing for these things! The
aftermarket
tube that you refer to, is it the Devek piece? If I ever have to do a
torque
tube replacement, I would give serious consideration to the Devek part.

Hope you can get it back in working order before the drags.

I got the verdict from the local Porsche Dealer, they said my whirring
sound coming from my shark is the torque tube.

They gave me the estimate, $2.9K which included 15 hours of labor. I
asked
how much of that was the tube, $1.9K. I jokingly asked "Is that with
or
without my PCA discount?" The (new) service manager wasn't too amused.
I
then asked if it would be possible for me to supply a rebuilt tube,
one
that had an extra bearing and would actually be better than the stock
replacement. He said he'd check and get back to me.

The phone message left with my secretary? "Can you pick your car up
tonight?, we have limited garage space."

I guess they don't install rebuilt tubes.

I picked my car up afterhours, at around 7:55pm. As I pulled up, there
was
a salesman walking around my car, checking it out. As I stepped out
of
my
wife's 4Runner, I told him I'd give him a good deal on the car. He
said
"Oh no, the car is beautiful, but these old All Wheel Drive models are
very
difficult to sell."

I couldn't help but smile as I left "Old Shit for Brains" admiring my
car
and went in to pay the $38 diagnostic fee to have the dealer tell me
something I already knew.
It would have been nice if the service manager was upfront with me
when
I
dropped off the car and basically told me "We have no intention on
doing
the repair that you are asking an estimate for, unless your are stupid
enough to pay 4x the amount for parts, and double the time for labor".
I
would have gladly paid my $38 then and there for his honesty and not
wasted
everyone's time.

When I got back out to my shark, the salesman was still there. I
fired
it
up, whirring sound and all. The salesman got that weird expression
like
he
had just swallowed something distasteful while being constipated. I
rolled
down my window, and piped up to the salesman, "front wheel drive is
out,
I'm gonna fix it myself", and pulled out.

I'm going to kick around where I go from here. The shark drags are on
the
25th, and I don't think I could pass tech with the whirring sound. I
guess
I could tell them I've got a gear drive or something. I really want to
do
the repair myself, but I don't think I could complete it in two weeks
time.
So, if I want to drag race, I need to take it up to Seattle and pay a
reasonable price for the repair. Decisions, decisions.

If I'm lucky, when I go to check the crank end play in the bell
housing
this weekend, the sound may go away. Ray Wach had stated his shark
made
a
similar noise until he released the static load at the flexplate.
I'll
keep my fingers crossed.

Thanks for listening,

Hey Calvin,

It was Larson's here in Tacoma. They have a new service manager
unfortunately. I got along well with the prior one, and he always treated
me right. Maybe that's why he's no longer there, sometimes good customer
service can cost $$.

Pat Edward just emailed me and said he was running his '85S at the shark
drags. Any chance you might reconsider? :)

All I can say is Porsche dealers are uppity pricks, I mean 3 grand to fix
a
torque tube? what dealer was it Barrier??? Akers seems to be pretty good i
had my 88 up there when the are went out and had the belt tensioned. Denny
said the air was electrical and sent me to another shop and charged me 100
for the adjustment...he has a pretty good rep with porsche owners in
seattle.
And it really pissesd me off when they stick you with the labor and then
have
the need for the triple mark up on the parts...
