Whirring Noise - And the winner is!
ADAM BIRNBAUM
Okay everyone,
I posted on sunday that my '88 S4 A/T had picked up a whirring noise. I'm going to get it verified with the local porsche shop tomorrow, but I think Geoff Taylor may be a winner. Of his many suggestions, he stated torque tube bearings. I just got done running the car with the front end in the air. Crawled underneath, and I swear the noise is coming from the torque tube. There is definitely a weird resonance thing going on under there. At first it sounded like it was coming from the bell housing, then the transaxle, then above the cats. I'd heard that drive train noises could be elusive, but man this is flat out weird. So, my local brethren, I'm all ears on torque tube replacement cost estimates. I would really like to take this on myself (really), but am not sure if I'm quite up to the task. I'll post tomorrow after I get the news from the experts. -Adam Birnbaum |
Adam,
If you remember, my tube went out last summer. I tried to do it myself but found it very difficult without a lift. The problem is that the rear end must come out, and to do this you need to support the car in the air, with the axle free to role away. I could not find a secure way to this without worrying about the car falling off the stands. For me it was worth paying the $900.00 or so to have it done. If you decide this is a better option, Denny Akers at Akers Foreign Auto in Seattle, does great work. I highly recommend him. They did mine in a day. They also replaced the front and rear bearings and serviced the trany at the same time, which I also recommend. Rob Fossett |

I do remember your fried torque tube. Mine is more of a whirring sound compared to the "ball bearings in a blender" sound that I remembered your shark making. So does the $900 include parts? -Adam ----- Original Message -----

Thanks for the input Calvin,
I don't think the tube has degraded that far. (Yet!) Ray Wach on Rennlist said he had a similar problem, and got rid of it by releasing the stress built up inbetween the tube and the engine. (Loosen collar, re-torque). The shop said it was the torque tube, but wouldn't install an aftermarket rebuild so I'm checking other options. -Adam ---------- From: mmayn43508@...feel the vibration in the shifter or some type of vibration from the bearings |
