I am using the HiTorque Mini Starter () and would recommend it. The price is $245. Chris at HiTorque is great and will know what you need. You can read about it here:?
If you want the original Porsche (928-604-103-01, 928-604-103-04,?928-604-103-06?928604103AX) or Bosch (0986013880) equivilant you have a few additional options: 1. buy a used one from Jeff. I also have a used spare that is sitting in my garage. 2. Have your's rebuilt but a local rebuilder. Try a good search for Starter Alternator rebuilders. See if you can find a bosch certified rebuilder. These are very common services, and you should be able to find a local service center. Costs should be around $125-$200. Your starter will have all the worn items replaced, and it will be painted.? 3. Buy a rebuilt Bosch unit (028851500272). Here is one for ?and here for 4. Buy a new Bosch starter at a lower price. The Porsche branded starter is about $800. This is really just a Bosche?

opps that last point got cut off,? 4? Buy a new Bosch starter at a lower price. The Porsche branded starter is about $800. This is really just a Bosch starter and you should be able to find one using this part number " 0 986 013 880".?

I'd bench test the starter before you get a new one.? The Old Buggers are very sensitive to current flow (and also have a wire for cold start I think) that makes them prone to not starting.? A simple solution if the starter bench tests OK is to add a relay in the system so the full 12V is applied directly to the starter. If that's your issue, search rennlist for the way to wire in the relay....
|
Use a relay where for what?
Why not just fix the current issue?

That requires replacing the FOE harness as its usually corroded
wires etc. and usually easier to add the relay to the system that
takes the 12v from the front post straight to the starter rather
than through the ignition .

Here's a discussion on rennlist that discusses the issues...
First test is bench testing the starter.....then go through this
thread to see if it can help solve your issue.

Easier isn't?correct. You fix the 40yr old problem, not add a future headache to it with more wires, more connections, and MORE corrosion to have to bugger about in the future. We make fun of cars that show up for sale with easy fixes all the time..just bybass?it, just use some other hot wire...etc. :)

I have one on a parts car (1979 euro) if you want it. I’m in portland. I’m in the process of pulling the manual drivetrain pieces and could pull it for you. No idea of condition; you’d want to clean and test, etc ?

?has a rebuilt for $109.79 (I wouldn't ship the core back for $35.00)?

I have found one at Autozone for $150. ?Minus a 20% discount.
I have to get the car moved to storage. ?Then next spring address it if any more issues arise.
The lower harness was replaced a hear and a half ago before moving it out to the west coast.
on the issue of a relay. ?The first thing I checked was the CE panel. ?No relay, but a jumper strap in the #18 socket. This rather surprised me. ?I like the idea of a relay between the solenoid and the ignition switch. ?Was frankly shocked it didnt have one.
|
That was one of the first things Imdid when acquiring the car. ?And de-oxed the connections.
|
Starter came in 2 days. ?Installed today and I am good to go.
The stupid thing is that I only have to pull it up my driveway and put it in storage.
Of course it couldnt have died next spring when I take the car out of storage
