Door panels, switches, locks and such

Hi all,

I've been lurking on our forum for quite some time as life projects have gotten in the way of 928 projects. Last week my right side window wouldn't return up to fully closed. Long story short I've replaced the switch, removed the door panel and refreshed the regulator, motor, and slider wheel/mechanism based on some great advice from MrMerlin on Rennlist. Before reinstalling the door panel I wanted to check to see if anything else should be done as "regular maintenance" since I had the panel off. So, getting to my (hopefully) simple question. Does anyone know how to secure the lock cylinder so that it's flush to the body of the 928? There's about a 1/8 inch gap as illustrated in the attached image. Mechanically, everything works great and It's been like this since I've owned the 928 but have never gotten around to fixing it.

Many thanks in advance, and good to "see" everyone here again.

Andrew

Re: OB instrument cluster question time

Warning brain check is on the list, as well as those rivets on the speed/foil.? Probably end up doing the ign switch too just because I don't want to go back in there LOL.
Thanks for the tips.?

Re: OB instrument cluster question time

Tom,

I have had mine off due leather rehab of most of my front. I had the broken gear on the trip and odometer. I also cleaned all the tabs on the foil that the connectors go onto with electronic cleaner sprayed onto a Q-tip and rubbed them then took a pencil erase and rubbed over them and this cleaned them up pretty nice. I also cleaned the grounds for the cluster. I did replace the switch electrics and also did the steering wheel bearing and bushing in the WYAIT. Some of the nuts on my foil felt loose so I tightened them them up.

Good luck
David

Re: OB instrument cluster question time

Tom, in my 1980 car, the rivets connecting the foil to the terminals were making intermittent contact. I ended up soldering the rivets to the foil traces, which solved my speedo/odometer problem. I can't remember if the other gauges are connected the same way?? Good luck.?

There are no adjustments on the regulators. 14.5V colt will drop down. There is a small pot on the gauge to adjust it to match the battery though. 15V will not cook the battery and it will drop down when hot.?

Also check and clean the connectors on the warning brain under the dead pedal.

Cheers

Subject: [PacNW928] OB instrument cluster question time

Working on the pod/instrument cluster of the 79.?? Cleaned all the connections on the cluster with deoxit, and made sure there were no obvious breaks in the foil on the back.? The foil seems to have been replaced at some point in the past as it's blue (not brown).?
Put it back in the 928 today and checked to see what's working etc.? First try, all the gauges seemed to work and were responsive (including the previously non-functioning volt meter and oil pressure).? Took it for a spin and speedo and odo still not working.? Get back to check connections etc, and head back out, and on the second start up, the volt meter and oil pressure quit working.
Also of note, on the first start, the ever present red "!"? went away when releasing the parking brake and no warning lights in the cluster.? On the second start (non-functioning oil pressure/volt gauges) I couldn't cancel or turn off the red "!".

Questions for the group.
Start with replacing the ignition switch?
Just bite the bullet and get a new instrument cluster foil (or the new circuit board that's out there)?
Any other potential culprits I should be looking at (like the sender for the speedo)?
Any simple testing procedures for the gauges to see if they are DOA?
and a final question:
Checking the voltmeter when it was working it was showing up near 15 volts, which, when measured at the battery at the back (engine running) was about 14.5 at idle.? Seems high for an OB?? Haven't looked at the alternator yet, but is there an adjustable voltage regulator for the OB (I think Valeo) alternators?? too high at idle?
Don't really want to cook the new battery.

Thanks in advance.........

I won't make it this year (too many things to do around the house), but if you have the time, it's worth a visit.?

New stricter rules on getting in, but the 928 is usually accepted (as long as it's clean and presentable).? Also, since this is opening day, you'll need to be there early (as in around 6am or so) if you want a space. Otherwise, park outside the area and walk in.? I'm betting there will be some really cool cars there and with the weather being optimal and pent up need to get the cars out, I'm sure it'll be a great day.

Re: New group 49 (H8) battery for $135

Great price. I just picked up an Everstart (Walmart) group 49 for $157.? Seems to be one of the few that have the group 49/H8 in stock here.? Everstart is made by Johnson Controls (who used to/maybe still do, make Interstate batteries).

Just saw on the same page that the Weize AGM was on sale at $138 and in stock at W

almart too.

While researching batteries, I read that AGM is OK, but don't last as long at the flooded cell (standard) batteries on cars that mostly sit on maintainers, so that's why I went with the standard battery.

BTW, these Group 49 H8 batteries are the large ones that fit 1979 up to early 86 928's.? The later 86.5 and up have a smaller battery box and use the H6 I believe (smaller).? I also think the 78 batteries are a bit different as their battery box is separate from body back there.

Let us know how it performs over the years.

It shows $149.99 on the website but it auto adds a promo code to make it $135.00

Mine came well packed with fast shipping from California so if anyone is looking for a cheap shark battery it could be a good choice.??

Re: Hooked On Driving At The Ridge Motorsports Park

Hey Keith, do you have any pictures or track videos of your #41?? I haven't seen it.
Thanks, -randy

Hooked On Driving At The Ridge Motorsports Park

Hey all - Are your Track Cars ready?? Or is your wonderful street car (928's or other) ready for the Track for 2024.??

Friday and Saturday this week Hooked On Driving is at The Ridge Motorsports Park April 12 & 13.? LOOKS LIKE NO RAIN!!!? ?Very light signup so far so plenty of track space.??
The Ridge is definitely my favorite track for driving the 928.? It's great for any car but the 928 worked so well there.??

As some of you remember, my 928 will not be there - I will be driving my #41 Stock Car - boy it is a beast and is so much fun to drive.? No passenger seat so no ride-alongs but I can do some Lead Follow Coaching if anyone is interested.??
Contact me if you have any questions.??
Go to "Hooked on driving? dot com" (no spaces - just don't want to put a link on the site in case it would be blocked) and sign up? This year you do NOT have to "join" HOD in order to come to an event - saves $50.??

If you do sign up for this or any other HOD event, in the box towards the bottom where it asks where did you hear about HOD, put Adam Birnbaum or John Davis names and they will get a $40 credit for their next visit.? Once you come, other 1st timers put your name down and you get $40 credit.??

I will be Coaching, but so few attendees this week (so far) I should be open for some quick no-cost coaching for my 928 friends at this event.? If you are new to HPDE track driving, sign up for A group and you will get a Coach (ask for me) for the whole day.?

If it's not too late, put 245-45 x 16's on the front also - the car will handle better. ?
I liked the performance much better with 245-45 tires, even if you only have 7" wheels in the front. ?
