Re: S4 / 4.5 clutch interchange

I remembered that the intermediate plate was pushed out of adj right after a couple of shifts; hence the diagnosis.?

Good info, and good to know that spec actually fixed the issue.?

That car is still around here somewhere, I've seen an occasional note from the new owner in past (still some issues with the euro conversion).

Tom,

That clutch that you had all the issues with I came down and swapped in a modified factory clutch and it worked perfectly after that. You guys gave me all the old pieces and I was able to diagnose the problem with that clutch wasn't actually the intermediate plate, but the pressure plate.
It didn't have limiting stops preventing the contact plate from moving too far forward. This bent the small flat springs past their operating window and left it dragging on the discs. Later spec pressure plates had the limiting stops and went to 3 return springs instead of 2.?

The intermediate plate is usually the culprit in poor shifting (and synchro destruction) in the early dual disk 928's.?
I seem to remember you are running a "spec" clutch? We tried to get one of those to work on a local listers 928 years ago and had nothing but problems.?
I'd go with Colin's solution and pin the intermediate plate.
It would probably make for good video on your youtube channel, showing the whole process.
good luck...

Hey Andrew,
Almost forgot about these and the similar rennlist thread reminded me :)?
Still have the mats?? Any plans on heading over this way?

Re: S4 / 4.5 clutch interchange

The S4 flywheel is substantially larger in diameter. You likely will have to use a 78-80 lower bellhousing and remove the factory starter bracket off the engine. This lower bellhousing will also require modifications to clear everything. You may even have to take the flywheel to a machine shop to have the 60-2 toothed wheel removed from the flywheel. Or at least to a little material removal off the rear face of the flywheel. If you do need to do any of that, you will need to take the flywheel and pressure plate (sans release arm and TOB) to a machine shop and have the assembly rebalanced.?
You will have to use the 87+ bellhousing, guide tube etc with this. Please keep in mind that the 87-95 throw out bearings have now been NLA for a long time. I am working on a fix for this, but it is slow going.?

The dual disc clutch is actually a far superior clutch. The intermediate plate can be fixed in a set position and the engagement and disengagement improves drastically. If you ship your intermediate plate to me, I perform the modifications for $120USD?+ shipping and you then can just install and not worry. Alternatively, I have 3 here from Mark Anderson which I need to get to (but they require more extensive work). As soon as I ship them to him, I am sure he would do an exchange basis for you.?

If it was me, I would never go from a single to a dual. But I have converted many 87+ cars to dual disc.?

Alternatively, there is an aftermarket clutch that is in the works with Jeannie (928GT.com) I don't know how close to production they are, or what the price point would be. But I got to drive a 1980 with the 4.5L on tail of the dragon just before SITM this year and the clutch held and shifted beautifully.?

I'm wondering about the feasibility of installing the single disc S4 stuff on the 4.5. I'm frustrated with the twin disc parts, and have the SD flywheel/pressure plate/ clutch arm/ bellhousing from the S4. Has anyone verified if this will work?? I'd love to have a clutch with no issues when I get it all swapped out.?

78 5sp for sale in Silverdale (on Facebook marketplace)

Interesting one.? Likely redone seats (recaro fabric), and basically a bunch of parts inside (and some large bolt on spacers :D ), but doesn't really look that terrible (straight door panels). Outside looks pretty clean overall.
They are asking $3,000.??
A bit high unless it's an early 78, but could make for a nice project for someone.
?
?
If anyone goes to look at it or inquires, I'd be curious to see the VIN and if it's original paint etc....

Local 944 and a 928 for sale

Found on Craigslist in Tacoma.? Selling a 84 944, and mentions the 928 is for sale too.? Pics also show a 911 (996?) in the mix.
Prefers talking via phone call to chat about the Porsches :) .
Seems to be an enthusiast from how the ad reads.?? Maybe a good deal for someone to check out. The 928 looks pre-86 and has H4 headlights.

Not too bad.? Shame it has relatively low miles.?

Would have made a great daily driver (AT), and cheap enough to have fun without worrying too much about future value.

Low miles on this one make it tougher to drive a lot, but being a 80 and with the automatic, maybe not that tough :D.

Re: Nice PacNW 1980 on BAT

Here's one thread that talks about the VIN/Build date issue.
?

Re: Nice PacNW 1980 on BAT

Rob Edwards has a good discussion on rennlist about VIN's and build dates.
I think the conclusion was that the VIN is assigned later so some cars will have a later build date, but lower VIN.?
Can you pull your glove box out and look at the actual build number?? Should be on the underside of the glove box insert.
?

Re: Nice PacNW 1980 on BAT

Very nice car - but the VIN & date is interesting:
My 1980 5-speed (80k miles so this one is a bunch less) has a build date of 09/1979 but my VIN is 500 higher than this car that has a 10/1979 date code.

6 pack of Porsche 928 Oil Filters

Found this on Craigslist in Vancouver (WA).? Sounds like someone picked them up and never used them (so they sat for a while).
Doubt they go bad, but at $25 for all, not too bad a deal.
If you're local, maybe worth it?
