Re: My concern for AER

开云体育

I am replying here to both Dona and Chris.

?

Dona, I was going to weigh in on the current AER difficulties, but your initial statement absolutely parallels my thoughts. I have little more to add aside from saying me too. If that were my only reason for responding, however, I probably would not bother as I often tire of reading “me too.” Messages on many lists. ?Chris Tabb’s response to you, and then yours to him, however, concerns me.

?

Let me disclose ahead of what I am about to say that I consider Mark Richert to be a personal friend, and I do not know Lee Sonnenberg at all. I am nonetheless attempting to restrict my comments here to what I know objectively. My personal feelings are not relevant to these comments. ?

?

I worked with Mark Richert as a member of the American Council of the Blind (ACB) Resolutions Committee during the seven years that I chaired the resolutions committee. I have also worked with him on some national legislative advocacy projects over the many years I have known him. ?Mark is probably the finest legal scholar and legal wordsmith with regard to the overall field of blindness in the Country. His work on the Macy Act truly was inspired.? Brilliant people, however, often do have an irascible ?streak, and mark is no exception. I am not going to say that I always found Mark to be easy to work with, but I always found that doing so was well worth the effort. ?I personally do not feel that AER can afford to lose Mark. Executive Directors, however, come and go. ?I frankly do not know how good of an acting director, or earlier how good of an Executive Director Mark was for AER, but he is a giant in the field of blindness, and AER can ill afford to do without his work and guidance. What Lee has done would appear to have cast disgraceful ?dispersion on Mark’s career and reputation. ?That in and of itself would suggest to me that Mr. Sonnenberg is not a good fit for AER.

?

I must acknowledge that I am an outsider looking in when it comes to the daily operation of AER. ?What Chris said about there being things of which Dona may be unaware probably applies tenfold to me. As a legally blind guy who has been a practitioner in the blindness field for most of the past 45 years, however, I know who the trusted blind leaders are, and should be. Mark is one such person, and AER has been lucky to have him working with and for them over many years. ?Michael Byington, Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist

Dear AER Members,

?

The Board of Directors of the Association for the Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (AER) held a special meeting Tuesday evening to discuss the future leadership of the organization. The meeting resulted in a vote to remove Mark Richert as president-elect, which also means he is no longer on the Board of the organization.

?

The Board did not make this decision lightly. Only after receiving a significant amount of input from members and other constituents of AER did we take this action.

?

The Board will now begin to evaluate new candidates for President and President-Elect. Olaya Landa-Vialard, AER’s current president, has agreed to extend her term until a new President is chosen.

While change is always difficult, the Board is enthusiastic about the future of AER. We look forward to seeing many of you at our upcoming International Conference in July.

Re: My concern for AER

Well said, Chris.? I suspect that Lee tried to work through the board, but like the previous valued employee who resigned under similar circumstances found the board unwilling to do its job.? I'm glad Lee made us aware of the situation and that the board found the courage to make a very difficult decision after apparently hearing from enough members who found this appalling.? I was having difficulty deciding whether to drop my AER membership because I would also be dropping support of the O&M Division.? I don't have to make that decision now.

The Board did not make this decision lightly. Only after receiving a significant amount of input from members and other constituents of AER did we take this action.

Tips on keeping white cane clean.

Hello everyone, I use a white cane specifically one by Ambutech.

It is the one with finger guards, and it also has the marshmallow rolling tip. What are some tips that you can give me on making sure that the tip lasts as long as possible? What is the best way to keep it clean?

Any tips would be very much appreciated.

Thank you very much.

Re: AMDs on stairs?

开云体育

Thank you for bringing this up! I have a Kindergarten student who uses an AMD. I’ve been hesitant to teach him to use it on the stairs, due to safety, since he is so fast. Right now he hands it off to an adult, after locating the drop and holds the railing and a modified human guide.?

His AMD is one that was handmade, so it doesn’t have a Center handle, like the ambutech ones. ?How would you teach him to use it on stairs, without that? Just holding it on the middle of that top bar?

Thanks!!

Shelby

thank you Jack! ?That sounds perfect. ?I’ll blind-copy the student - we just met and came up with a way that works for her, but she wasn’t using the railing. ?This looks like a great technique that allows her to do that.

Haha- no, I didn’t design the AMD, I think that was Lynn Geautraux, but I have used it many times.

Speaking of design, one of the most crucial measurements for the AMD is the width -the wheels need to be far enough apart that the feet walk behind it, not outside, as explained at??under “wheel position.” ?Ambutech apparently stopped offering variations in width, theirs is a few inches too narrow for my student, so I’m asking them if they can customize it and if so, if there is an extra charge.

And speaking of Lynn Geauteaux, I just learned this morning that his beloved Angel died 6 weeks ago. ?She was such a beautiful soul, I’m heartbroken to hear it.

Dona

What will be the source for finding your recorded webinar?? AER, ACVREP, etc.? Was it determined if there were CE hours with this???

I believe I was at your first workshop on uncontrolled crossings in Montgomery County somewhere off of Bel Pre:))? I don't recall the year:(

Thanks

Hi everyone!? The second in our series of free webinars for the South Africa Low Vision Centre of Learning is next week, Wednesday morning June 12 at 11:30 AM Eastern.? The link to register is at the end of this message.? It will be recorded and posted for free afterwards.
?
In this webinar, we will present different situations to 3 volunteers and guide them through the process of?
1) recognizing if they can be confident in that situation that it will be clear to cross whenever it's quiet and
2) if not, analyze what the risk of crossing would be, knowing that when they start crossing, there might be a vehicle approaching that would have to stop for them.
?
VOLUNTEER STUDENT???? If you'd like to be one of the "students" please contact me.? You'd join Jolene or me for about 10 minutes the evening or morning before the webinar to develop a good intuitive understanding of "your" 7-second crossing time.
?
Thanks!

Uh-oh!? You find yourself at a street where you cannot be sure whether it is clear to cross -- now what?? In this session we will consider what"safe" means, look at the factors that help us assess the level of risk of that crossing situation, and talk about what can be done if the risk is not acceptable.
