Hi Jack and Gilbert!? Gilbert, the program costs only $25, so it should be feasible for you to acquire.? See
?
And Jack, WOW!? I assumed you were planning to mail it or deliver it to your student to install himself – you’re right, the program can NOT be installed over the internet!? APH tried to do that when there was such a demand, and there are just toooo many videos and recordings for that to be possible.
?
So I’m glad you decided to run it from your computer, because you had no choice!

Given those disadvantages, I would probably still use it on my own computer rather than the student’s.? I didn’t find the half-second lag to be a problem except when comparing street-crossing time with warning times, and it was easily solved by telling the computer the crossing time was a second longer (it can’t deal in half-second increments or I would have told it the crossing time was a half-second longer).

Eep!? I didn’t realize this was going to the listserv – glad I didn’t use any expletives or start gossiping!
?
Now that I know I was going public, I would like to add one thing.? But first I’ll admit (I probably shouldn’t tell anyone this!) that even though it was me who developed the APH street-crossing program, I had never used it myself until this remote experience with Jeremy last month.? To be honest, it intimidated me!? I’ve been teaching these skills for 30 years and the idea of following a regimented program AND using technology was . . . scary.
?
But when I did use it, what I found is that I could use the sections of the program that I needed, AND I could use them to serve my own purposes, using my own teaching style.? THAT was COOL!? If you go to the videos at and you may notice that there is a LOT of discussion between trials.? I loved being about to control when to present the next trial, repeat the last one, skip some of them, and whether to explain the instructions myself vs. having the program read them, etc.
?
That would be hard to do if you’re having the student run the program? himself while you listen in.? I liked having Jeremy just participate as a student, pushing the spacebar when he hears a car, and pushing buttons to answer the questions, while I did all the rest myself.
?
But everyone has their own style.? Instructors who aren’t familiar with teaching these skills may prefer to just follow the program, at least until they get more experience.

What are everyone’s thoughts on face masks and their effect on blind travelers? They can change ear shape and obscure sensory input. Are there specific designs that may be less problematic than others?

Any hat, mask or hood requires adjusting to how it feels ?to process environmental information when traveling. However, I personally have weighed the consequences of refusing to make allowances for these at times uncomfortable accommodations to my personal preferences, realizing that sometimes, I just have to do certain things like wear hats and hoods when it’s freezing out and masks when the little Coronas might be out to get me.

You could also try tying the bottom pair high on the back of your head and bringing the top strings down to the base of the skull which helps some people avoid fogging their glasses.
? Second, Amazon has at least 50 products under the category of “mask strap extenders” typically around ten dollars. ?Ours, pictured below, is a plastic strap about six inches long with three hooks on each end so you have some control over how tight the mask is. We can wash sanitize and reuse these. We got ten of them. You still need to find a mask with straps about the right length but hooking the straps to this extender takes the pressure off your ears.
