Re: Software question
开云体育Hi Jack and Gilbert!? Gilbert, the program costs only $25, so it
should be feasible for you to acquire.? See
?
And Jack, WOW!? I assumed you were planning to mail it or deliver it
to your student to install himself – you’re right, the program can NOT be
installed over the internet!? APH tried to do that when there was such a
demand, and there are just toooo many videos and recordings for that to be
possible.
?
So I’m glad you decided to run it from your computer, because you had no
choice!

Thanks for your quick response!? I really appreciate it.?
I think that I will probably go ahead with running it from my computer.? I
also found that it takes quite a lot of space on the computer (14 GB!!!) so
installing it over the net would take....a while.?

开云体育Eep!? I didn’t realize this was going to the listserv – glad I didn’t
use any expletives or start gossiping!
?
Now that I know I was going public, I would like to add one thing.?
But first I’ll admit (I probably shouldn’t tell anyone this!) that even though
it was me who developed the APH street-crossing program, I had never used it
myself until this remote experience with Jeremy last month.? To be honest,
it intimidated me!? I’ve been teaching these skills for 30 years and the
idea of following a regimented program AND using technology was . . .
scary.
?
But when I did use it, what I found is that I could use the sections of the
program that I needed, AND I could use them to serve my own purposes, using my
own teaching style.? THAT was COOL!? If you go to the videos at
and
you may notice that there is a LOT of discussion between trials.? I loved
being about to control when to present the next trial, repeat the last one, skip
some of them, and whether to explain the instructions myself vs. having the
program read them, etc.
?
That would be hard to do if you’re having the student run the program?
himself while you listen in.? I liked having Jeremy just participate as a
student, pushing the spacebar when he hears a car, and pushing buttons to answer
the questions, while I did all the rest myself.
?
But everyone has their own style.? Instructors who aren’t familiar
with teaching these skills may prefer to just follow the program, at least until
they get more experience.

Jack, that was my first idea – why not?? I was told that teachers were
not allowed to send anything to their students, so that’s when I went for
alternatives.
?
The disadvantages are that the student will have to figure out how to
present the next trial, etc., and the record of his progress will be in his
computer, not yours – those records would be nice to have as you plan the next
lesson.? And I would strongly recommend that you yourself skim through the
program and become familiar with it before using it to help you teach the
student.
?
Given those disadvantages, I would probably still use it on my own computer
rather than the student’s.? I didn’t find the half-second lag to be a
problem except when comparing street-crossing time with warning times, and it
was easily solved by telling the computer the crossing time was a second longer
(it can’t deal in half-second increments or I would have told it the crossing
time was a half-second longer).

I know that you did your demonstration with the software installed on your

think there would be any advantages or disadvantages to installing the software
on the student's machine instead?? At the present time I will only be using
it with one student.? Installing on the student's computer would reduce the
lag time issues for the student hearing the sounds and the signal from the
student's computer getting back to my computer, but I suspect there might be
disadvantages that I'm not seeing.? What are your thoughts? ?
I'm also sending this to the O&M list because I suspect that others

Re: PPE
开云体育In my family, no single mask design fits everyone comfortably and we have all had to try multiple masks. Two solutions are available to those who don’t tolerate straps/strings pulling on their ears.? First, you could get cloth masks with four strings. ?Tie the top strings above your ears and the others below to keep the ears free. You could also try tying the bottom pair high on the back of your head and bringing the top strings down to the base of the skull which helps some people avoid fogging their glasses. ? Second, Amazon has at least 50 products under the category of “mask strap extenders” typically around ten dollars. ?Ours, pictured below, is a plastic strap about six inches long with three hooks on each end so you have some control over how tight the mask is. We can wash sanitize and reuse these. We got ten of them. You still need to find a mask with straps about the right length but hooking the straps to this extender takes the pressure off your ears.
