Fw: 10 more reasons for modest optimism
In addition to the blooming magnolias and plum trees in the 'hood, a few more reasons for optimism! Happy Friday, Oakgrovians! From: Robert Reich <robertreich@...> Sent: Friday, February 28, 2025 1:03 AM To: melissamednick@... <melissamednick@...> Subject: 10 more reasons for modest optimism Forwarded this email? Subscribe here for more 10 more reasons for modest optimism Robert Reich Feb 28 READ IN APP Friends, Since I offered you 10 reasons for modest optimism last week, discontent with the Trump-Musk regime has surged even further. America appears to be waking up. Here¡¯s the latest evidence ¡ª 10 more reasons for modest optimism. 1. Trump¡¯s approval ratings continue to plummet. The chief reason Trump was elected was to reduce the high costs of living ¡ª especially food, housing, health care, and gas. A new Pew poll shows these costs remain uppermost in Americans¡¯ minds. Sixty-three percent identify inflation as an overriding problem, and 67 percent say the same about the affordability of health care. That same poll shows the public turning on Trump. The percent of those disapproving of Trump¡¯s handling of the economy has risen to 53 percent (versus 45 percent who approve). Disapproval of his actions as president has risen to the same 53 percent versus 45 percent approval, which shows how essential economic performance is to the public¡¯s assessment of presidents these days. The Pew poll also shows 57 percent of the public believes that Trump ¡°has exceeded his presidential authority.¡± By making the world¡¯s richest person his hatchet man, Trump has made more vivid the role of money in politics. Hence, a record-high 72 percent now say a major problem is ¡°the role of money in politics.¡± Other polls show similar results. In the Post-Ipsos poll, significantly more Americans strongly disapprove of Trump (39 percent) than strongly approve of him (27 percent). Reuters, Quinnipiac University, CNN, and Gallup polls show Trump¡¯s approval ratings plummeting (ranging from 44 percent to 47 percent). In all of these polls, more Americans now disapprove of Trump than approve of him. 2. DOGE is running amusk. DOGE looks more and more like a giant hoax. This week, reporters found that nearly 40 percent of the contracts DOGE claims to have canceled aren¡¯t expected to save the government any money, according to the administration¡¯s own data. As a result, on Tuesday DOGE deleted all of the five biggest ¡°savings¡± on its so-called ¡°wall of receipts.¡± The scale of its errors ¡ª and the misunderstandings and poor quality control that appear to underlie them ¡ª has raised questions about the effort¡¯s broader work, which has led to mass firings and cutbacks across the federal government. DOGE has also had to reverse its firings. On Tuesday, Secretary of Veterans Affairs Douglas A. Collins celebrated cuts to 875 contracts that he claimed would save nearly $2 billion. But when veterans learned that those contracts covered medical services, recruited doctors, and funded cancer programs as well as burial services for veterans, the outcry was so loud that on Wednesday the VA rescinded the ordered cuts. After hundreds of nuclear weapons workers were abruptly fired, the Trump administration is scrambling to rehire them. After hundreds of scientists at the Food and Drug Administration were fired, they¡¯re being asked to return. On Wednesday, Musk acknowledged that DOGE ¡°accidentally canceled¡± efforts by the U.S. Agency for International Development to prevent the spread of Ebola. But Musk insisted the initiative was quickly restored. Wrong. Current and former USAID officials say Ebola prevention efforts have been largely halted since Musk and his DOGE allies moved last month to gut the global-assistance agency and freeze its outgoing payments. The teams and contractors that would be deployed to fight an Ebola outbreak have been dismantled, they added. DOGE staff are resigning. On Tuesday, 21 federal civil service tech workers resigned from DOGE, writing in a joint resignation letter that they were quitting rather than help Musk ¡°dismantle critical public serv

Fw: ?? Special Election: Oakland Mayor Endorsement
HI all, the organization Empower Oakland recently conducted interviews with the two front runners in the Oakland mayoral election to be held April 15th-- Loren Taylor and Barbara Lee. The links below (in green) take you to the recorded interviews with the two candidates, their written responses to interview questions, and information about other ways to learn more about the candidates and their platforms. Oakland is at a crucial crossroad right now and needs informed citizens who vote!! Please vote on April 15th and thanks for listening! Best regards, Melissa From: Empower Oakland <empoweroakland@...> Sent: Wednesday, February 26, 2025 10:01 AM To: melissamednick@... <melissamednick@...> Subject: ?? Special Election: Oakland Mayor Endorsement Forwarded this email? Subscribe here for more ?? Special Election: Oakland Mayor Endorsement Vote Loren Taylor for a new generation of Oakland leadership Feb 26 READ IN APP Last November, 60% of Oaklanders voted to recall Sheng Thao, signaling widespread frustration as our city faced serious challenges: a public safety crisis, a perpetual budget deficit pushing Oakland toward potential bankruptcy, and a lack of confidence in our city¡¯s direction. Put simply, voters made it clear: Oakland is not on the right track. On April 15, we will elect Oakland¡¯s next mayor. While real decision-making in our city depends on both the mayor¡¯s office and the city council, the next mayor will have the opportunity to set the tone for our future. As with all our endorsements, we encourage voters to hear directly from the candidates: Read their responses to Empower Oakland¡¯s detailed questionnaire Watch their in-person interviews with our endorsement committee Attend live and virtual events to ask your own questions and learn more Today, we are proud to endorse Loren Taylor for Mayor of Oakland. His vision, experience, and practical approach make him the best choice to lead Oakland forward. If you believe in a better future for Oakland, please consider donating to and/or volunteering for his campaign. Support Loren Taylor Oakland Mayor Endorsement Rank #1: Loren Taylor Loren Taylor is the most prepared candidate to be Mayor of Oakland, and all Oakland voters should rank him #1. He is the only viable candidate with experience in City Hall ¡ª and the only one championing common sense, practical ideas to improve our city. In fact, many of Oakland¡¯s most popular reforms originated from Taylor, and are now being embraced by multiple Mayoral candidates and other leaders. He¡¯s also presented by far the most detailed policy positions and practical plans across public safety, housing, budget stabilization, business revitalization, and government accountability. Proven Track Record As a city council member, Taylor had a track record of getting things done in Oakland: He fought back efforts to defund the police, advocating for an outcomes-focused approach to public safety Taylor authored and secured unanimous support from the city council to pass the city¡¯s first encampment management policy He created the ¡°Blue Ribbon Equitable Business Tax Task Force¡± which brought together community and business stakeholders to identify solutions that encouraged economic development Taylor¡¯s record reflects a dedicated leader willing to take on tough problems and work across differences to deliver real solutions. Public Safety Taylor believes in fully staffing our police department, using technology to improve the efficiency of our officers, and reducing red tape that prevents police from doing their jobs. His 10-point plan on public safety is by far the most detailed plan we¡¯ve seen from any candidate in the last year. Budget & Economic Growth Taylor understands that truly stabilizing Oakland's finances requires addressing the structural deficit ¡ª an issue he's been sounding the alarm about for years. Taylor's background in business is particularly well suited for this challenge. Taylor intends to: Focus on renegotiating the city¡¯s contracts that are crippling our spending Purse grants and other funding opportunities to grow c

Forwarded this email? Subscribe here for more What you can do Revised and expanded Robert Reich Feb 6 READ IN APP Friends, In light of Trump II¡¯s first 18 days of mayhem ¡ª including his and Musk¡¯s coup against our system of government ¡ª many are asking: ¡°What can I do now?¡± Here¡¯s a revised and expanded list, in rough order of importance. 1. Protect vulnerable members of your communities who are undocumented or whose parents are undocumented. This is an urgent moral call to action. As Trump¡¯s ICE begins roundups and deportations, many good people and their families are endangered and understandably frightened. One of Trump¡¯s executive orders allows ICE to arrest undocumented immigrants at or near schools, places of worship, health care sites, shelters, and relief centers ¡ª thereby deterring families from sending their kids to school or getting help they need, and threatening the health and well-being of entire communities. Urge your governor and state legislature, and your mayor or city manager, to block ICE. Get your local and state lawmakers to seek federal court injunctions. Check in with their offices to see what they are doing to protect vulnerable families in your community. Join others in voluntary efforts to keep ICE away from hospitals, schools, and shelters. Meanwhile, you should order these red cards from Immigrant Legal Resources Center and make them available in and around your community: Red Cards / Tarjetas Rojas | Immigrant Legal Resource Center | ILRC. You might also find these of use: Immigration Preparedness Toolkit | Immigrant Legal Resource Center | ILRC. 2. Protect LGBTQ+ members of your community. Trump is trying to make life far more difficult for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other people through executive orders, changes in laws, alterations in civil rights laws, or changes in how such laws are enforced. His election and his rhetoric might also unleash hatefulness by bigoted people in your community. Work with others in being vigilant against prejudice and bigotry, wherever it might break out. When you see or hear it, call it out. Join with others to stop it. If you trust your local city officials, get them involved. If you trust your local police, alert them as well. 3. Help protect public officials whom Trump and his administration are targeting for vengeance. Some may be low-level officials, such as election workers. If they do not have the means to defend themselves legally, you might help them or consider a GoFundMe campaign. If you hear of anyone who seeks to harm them, immediately alert local law-enforcement officials. Other endangered people are Justice Department prosecutors and FBI agents who worked on the January 6 and Mar-a-Lago classified papers cases. You can help protect them by making sure you know what Trump¡¯s Justice Department is trying to do to them (here¡¯s one good source), and spreading the word. Fw: Posts from Red Oak Realty's Blog from 01/10/2025
Hi all, in case you are looking for ways to help out with the devastating fires in LA, I wanted to pass along this list. Best to you and yours, Melissa From: Red Oak Realty <website@...> Sent: Friday, January 10, 2025 7:25 AM To: Melissa <mednick@...> Subject: Posts from Red Oak Realty's Blog from 01/10/2025 The latest articles from Red Oak Realty's blog. View this email in your browser A new article has been posted to Red Oak Realty's blog. Enjoy! How to Help Our Los Angeles Neighbors By hello@... (Red Oak Realty) on Jan 09, 2025 03:20 pm Here in the Bay Area, we are no stranger to the devastation of wildfires. We know the impact that something like this can have on a homeowner, a neighbor, a friend. We also know that as deep an impact the fires in LA are having on those communities, we could just as easily experience the same event right here in the Bay. We understand that a home is so much more than a physical structure. When a home is lost, so are a lifetime of memories. Our hearts are with all of those impacted by these devastating fires. If you would like to help our southern neighbors, in addition to larger organizations like the Red Cross, here are a few more ways to do so: California Fire Foundation works with local fire agencies and community-based organizations to provide ongoing support to California communities affected by wildfires. Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation is currently running a campaign to provide support for the firefighters on the ground right now. Donations will directly benefit firefighters with essential tools and supplies needed, including hydration backpacks, emergency fire shelters (which save lives) and wildland brush tools, all of which have an immediate impact on the front lines. GoFundMe has set up a centralized hub of verified fundraising pages which is strictly vetted by the platform. They¡¯ve also set up their own 2025 Wildfire Relief Fund where all funds raised will go directly to those impacted as well as to nonprofit organizations providing relief on the ground. World Central Kitchen is a nonprofit global food relief organization that is already in Southern California to aid first responders and evacuees. Emergency Network Los Angeles provides assistance to people affected by disasters in the area. They represent a network of nonprofit entities in the area, working to promote community welfare and emergency preparation and relief. Community Organized Relief Effort(CORE) is a global humanitarian organization launched in 2010 in response to the Haiti earthquake. They work with local communities worldwide to provide both short-term and long-term help and recovery, especially in underserved areas. The Pasadena Humane Society has taken in over 300 animals so far. They are looking for donations of food and water bowls, blankets, and more. They are also seeking people willing to foster animals at this time. California Community Foundation was founded in 1915 to support Los Angeles communities. The organization serves as a resource for supporting long-term solutions for fire-prone areas. They¡¯ve set up a Wildfire Recovery Fund to help those impacted. How else can you help? Have an ADU? Unrented apartment or home? Space to foster some beloved pets? Many Bay Area homeowners have posted on social media, offering their homes and space to house those displaced by the fires¡ªwhether family members, friends, friends of friends, and more. Even if a financial contribution is not an option for you, there are often other ways that we all can help. Have an idea to add? We¡¯d love to hear from you. Read in browser ? Fw: [Citizens Oakland] Public Safety update - Town Hall and Take Action 2
Hi all, given the fires raging in the LA area right now, I thought the email below might be of interest to folks on this list. The email outlines some steps Oakland residents can take if they are concerned about the potential closure of four additional fire stations and/or the loss of CHP support to the Oakland Police Department. Best, Melissa From: citizensoakland@... <citizensoakland@...> on behalf of Rajni Mandal <rajni.v.mandal@...> Sent: Wednesday, January 8, 2025 12:35 PM To: citizensoakland@... <citizensoakland@...> Subject: [Citizens Oakland] Public Safety update - Town Hall and Take Action Hi everybody! Hope you all had a great holiday and New Year. There's a lot happening - and a lot YOU can do to help make our city safer. See below. Rajni Mandal North Hills Community Association Public Safety Committee Police: We may lose CHP support over OPD pursuit policy Governor Newsom has set an ultimatum to the Police Commission - to change the pursuit policy or risk losing CHP support. I've written about it here, and will be joining neighbors at the Police Commission meeting this Friday (email me for more information) Please attend a Town Hall to discuss the pursuit policy Wednesday, January 15, 6:30pm at the East Bay Church of Religious Science Fire: We may have closures of up to seven fire stations Due to budget cuts, we currently have three closed fire stations, with four more on the horizon in February. Although there are "brown-outs" (ie. temporary), they are dependent on receiving funds from the Coliseum sale, and will likely continue with the new budget. The majority of OFD's calls are medical, so this means that it will take longer to reach medical emergencies. Send an email now to the city government, so that they prioritize keeping fire stations open. You can also cut and paste the letter here. City Hall updates: This week, the new City Council members were sworn in. We have Kevin Jenkins as interim Mayor, and Noel Gallo as President of the City Council. April election preview: The Mayor race is heating up, with over 10 candidates so far. Congresswoman Barbara Lee just announced her candidacy. The deadline to file is January 17th. There may be two ballot measures to increase sales tax, and a parcel tax to fund the Police Commission and Public Ethics Commission - still yet to be voted on by Council. -- Feel free to share this email with friends and citizens. Summary of Planning Commission Meeting Outcomes RE: JCC Project
FYI Sent by magic Begin forwarded message: From: Leslie Moldow Date: November 6, 2024 at 9:55:30 PM PST To: ChabotVillagers, Chabot Core Subject: Summary of Planning Commission Meeting Outcomes RE: JCC Project ? This is a photo of 18 participants of the 27 who spoke on behalf of Chabot Village and related neighbors. In addition there were several other supporters from our block who attended but chose not to speak. Everyone who spoke during the 2 minute community presentations, underscored the issues of the increased traffic on Chabot that would be caused by their plan and/or the noise the project will create from pickleball, outdoor amplified sound and a half-court basketball court. There was an ample variety of informed perspectives presented and the Planning Commissioners articulated that they were overwhelmed by the thoughtfulness and thoroughness of the community turn-out, passion and concern. In an effort to show some appeasement of the neighborhood's concerns, the JCC came prepared with some concessions they presented and summarized in a memorandum that was shared in an email with our core team literally an hour before the meeting. The planning commissioners, after extensive and perceptive questions to planners, consultants and the JCC on issues relating mostly to traffic safety and security, used the JCC memorandum as the basis of their Conditions of Approval. I am sure that we will get a formal summary of the Conditions of Approval from the Oakland Planning Department tomorrow, but I also know many people are curious about what happened. The project was approved with the following Conditions: 1. Construction vehicles will only use Claremont, not Chabot. 2. They will delete the 4 pickleball courts from their site. 3. Basketball may be played from 9am-9pm (the half-court was not relocated or eliminated) 4. Special events will be held from Saturday at 5 (or an hour after sunset, to 10pm) 5. For the curbs on Claremont and Chabot, the curbs will be painted red to daylight at least 20ft on each side to increase visibility 6. Special events of more than 50 people will use Claremont for both ingress and egress so that traffic will not be on Chabot. 7. Rideshare will have their drop-off on Claremont 8. We will have twice a year meetings with the JCC to check in on issues that may be occuring to come up with solutions to solve them. There were some informal clarifications that the JCC said during their presentations that are not in writing but we will have some on-going discussions with them to pin them down. 1. The JCC described their outdoor amplification system as a PA system for emergency and security situations and events such as graduation. They clarified it was not for blaring music during parties. 2. During special events the road between parking lots will be connected so the lots can work in tandem 3. They will not be asked to pay for an added bulb-out on the south-east corner of College and Chabot. It will not happen. 4. The JCC will share the results of their annual traffic study with us for the first three years they are required to do it. 5. Our recourse if there is too much site noise is to contact the person in the planning office who records issues that are breaking the COA for the project. I feel we did get them to make some changes to their program that without everyone's input they would not have felt the pressure to make-- That said, if people are still dissatisfied there is an appeal process that will be outlined in our email from the City I will share when I receive it. Our understanding is we have a 10 calendar day window to file an appeal. It costs $10K. It would go to the City Council for review. I sent an email to Dan Kalb earlier today asking about the process and if he can support us if we take that route. Others with better notes or memory than I have, please add on to this email if you know I am missing something or misrepresenting something.
