Farewell to our mail carrier "Angie"
Dear Neighbors,
If you don’t know our regular mail carrier Angie by name, you probably know her friendly smile. And she certainly knows all of us! That’s why she wants to let us know that she has only one more week of delivering our mail here on Oak Grove and Pedestrian Way. (Her last day is May 13th.) She’ll be continuing her education to further her new career. So when you see her, tell her hello, thanks, and good luck in her new endeavor. Regards, Chuck/Chuff @5632 |
Support Paul on his Ride 4 a Reason
开云体育Dear Neighbors,It’s that time of year again! Last Saturday Paul rode his bike to Sacramento with three other hardy cyclists on the “Ride for NO Reason,” which is their cute name for the annual course check to make sure there are no new road hazards or big problems on the 108-mile route. And this coming Saturday, he will ride to Sacramento again with 200 other riders in the 13th annual Ride 4 a Reason to benefit public schools AND to advocate for more school funding with a rally on the steps of the Capitol.? Please go to??to donate online, or if you want to go old school and write a paper check, please make it payable to “Claremont Middle School PTA” and put “R4R 2022” in the memo line. And then you can drop it in our mailbox at 5672 Oak Grove Ave. (Or mail it to Ride 4A Reason, PO Box 11386, Oakland CA 94611.)? Please read on for Paul’s spiel — I always think he writes the best one! Your neighbor, Jen Vetter 5672 Oak Grove Ave? Why you should donate!Hey there, people of the internet! I'm riding to Sacramento once again to raise funds for Ride for a Reason. We're all excited to ride safely once again. We raise money for public schools in Oakland and Alameda Island. You may be thinking, "Gosh, I can't really get excited about a fundraiser for someone else's school..." I encourage you to read up?and find out more about the mission and motivation of R4R. We raise funds for schools which otherwise don't get much private fundraising. Why? Because it's a mess the way California funds its public schools. The state allocates money to school districts based on enrollment, but California is not a national leader on what states provide to students and teachers. So lots of schools in affluent districts make up for a lack of resources with private fundraising. That probably sounds familiar. But where does that leave students from less affluent areas with lower property tax revenue? Students experiencing poverty? Students from big, dense cities? Students at schools that serve large numbers of brand-new immigrants? That's where we at R4R come in, and that's where you, concerned internet citizen, come in to help. Donate to this fundraiser, and your donation goes to a school that really needs funds to provide "extra" services for students at needy schools. We're talking simple "extra" stuff like library books, science materials, sports equipment and coaching, after-school programs for younger students, art supplies, extra teaching, tutoring, and counseling support for students who need it. You're like "What? Isn't that stuff in the district budget already?" We wish! That's why we're raising money and making noise! Now hit that button and support some students! Yay, you!? And if it makes you donate more, you can think that I'll be suffering on the bike! Or you can think that your donations give me that extra motivation boost to ride all day long! Riding more than 100 miles is mostly a mental challenge, and your support does make a difference when I'm about ready to cramp and barf in scorching 90 degree heat or 25 mph headwinds.? All best,? Re: break-ins
开云体育Sorry to hear about the break-ins, Alison! The zone between TJ’s and the first house on that same side of Oak Grove has historically been problematic for overnight break-ins. Over the nearly 30 years we’ve lived here, I’ve seen and heard of numerous break ins of cars parked in that area overnight. Maybe because there are no residents living adjacent to that strip of parking to hear the noise?? I would definitely avoid parking there overnight if at all possible. Happy Spring, neighbors! ? Hi friends, Not sure if this is the same man folks recently inquired about. But -- there is a Caucasian, tall, thin, 50-something y/o man, sometimes wearing a wool hat, frequently on his bicycle - who has been watching me, talking to me, sitting on my stoop, watching me enter and leave my home, and looking me up and down in a way that makes my skin crawl. I've learned from living through a few fun assaults/muggings that one should always trust one's instincts. Reaching out to my neighbor-folk for some assistance. I am told that he is mentally ill and lives on our street, and rents out space in someone's home. (By the by, I am a psychologist, so I am not concerned that he is mentally ill. I am concerned that he follows me.) Does anyone know who this man is??If he lives in/near your home, or if you have info, would you please contact me?? Many thanks, Rachel Z.? 5675 OG |

Sorry to hear about this person who obviously needs a network of help and surveillance that we’re simply deficient in.?It’s extraordinarily sad to think how our area has it relatively “easy” compared to places like E12th and so forth throughout Oakland.? In the distant past when we all periodically met about emergency prep and crime, let’s remind ourselves again to do an overall security check —removal of?attractive nuisances from porches, operating outdoor lights, optional cameras (with recording capability to share with law enforcement and insurance), earthquake and wildfire supplies, safety checks for everything (from gas lines to tree roots) and an updated inventory list with receipts (agsin for those police and insurance reports). This may not seem exactly relevant to a deranged individual shouting on your porch, but it’s part and parcel of living in an urban area. |
