View this email in your browser TAKE ACTION THIS WEEK Dear Friends, EBSC strongly denounces the Trump Administration’s recent termination of the Unaccompanied Children Program, causing over 26,000 children who entered the country alone to lose their legal representation. As unaccompanied minors, children are especially vulnerable to trafficking and other abuses on their journeys to the U.S. and once they arrive. Legal representation is the only thing that is preventing them from being sent back to danger and possible death. We urge Congress to stand firmly against the termination of this life-saving program and to restore due process and legal protections for unaccompanied minors. Take Action – Show up TOMORROW in support of legal access for immigrant children. Attend the hearing at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET on Tuesday, April 1st at the District Court for the Northern District of California (450 Golden Gate Ave., San Francisco, California) . RSVP here or watch via Zoom here (password 426303) if you cannot attend in person. EBSC has served over 750 unaccompanied minors in the last 10 years. With our help, they are able to attain asylum, stay in school, and begin to heal. Children with access to legal counsel and support services have better outcomes with their overall immigration cases, while those without are more likely to be deported to dangerous conditions. Ultimately, this decision completely undermines due process, a basic right entitled to all humans, citizens or not. “The 26,000 children whose access to counsel was slashed will be at higher risk of exploitation and trafficking and their chances of obtaining legal protection will plummet. No child should be forced to fend for themselves against a trained [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] attorney without a lawyer by their side.” – Lindsay Toczylowski, President of Immigrant Defenders Law Center (ImmDef) Why does legal representation matter? Many children have a legal pathway relief b

Hi neighbors - this is a Hail Mary, but… our yellow Honda Fit was sideswiped while parked in front of our house at 5655 Oak Grove on 3/8 at about 4:55 PM. The driver was a young kid, who did the right thing and knocked on our door to let us know. Unfortunately, the insurance company is raising some issues of coverage and needs either witnesses or video. So, in case any of you saw it, or have ring or other video- could you please let me know? I only have pics from the next day. many thanks and I hope you all are well! warmly Kelly

Protest rally in downtown Oakland on Saturday April 5th
3
Hi neighbors, a nationwide Anti-Trump protest will be happening on Saturday April 5th . There will be a rally in downtown Oakland at Oscar Grant Plaza , 409 14th Street (formerly called Frank Ogawa Plaza) from 1-2:30. I have copied the link below, which provides info on how to register and details about the rally, in case folks haven't yet heard about this protest. The Trump administration and its sycophants want us to feel powerless and we ARE NOT!! Please consider attending the protest or if you are not able to attend, consider donating to an organization fighting this administration such as the ACLU, Indivisible or your favorite Immigrants' Rights group. Thanks for listening and for standing up. WE WILL get through this together. If folks are interested in carpooling there together, email me directly at melissamednick@.... Kind regards, Melissa. https://www.mobilize.us/indivisible/event/765229/

has broken in to last night
5
FYI OGA-ers: Last night (Friday) around 9:40pm (I wasn't here and my brother was asleep), a man jumped our back gate (I have a ring camera there) and then he smashed the back French door glass and came in. At first I didn't think he took anything bc the front ring camera shows him leaving out the front door and nothing clearly in his hands. But I looked at it a few times and on closer inspection could see what looked like a laptop under his arm. And sure enough a loner I had from San Jose State was missing from my office. I say all of this to just remind us all to do whatever you can to be safe and secure and to know these things are happening on our street. Fortunately, nothing else was taken and no one was hurt. Why I'm voting for Barbara Lee for Oakland Mayor
3
Dear Friends and Neighbors, I’m voting for Barbara Lee because she is the only candidate who has the respect of all the different constituencies in Oakland that will need to work together to solve Oakland’s current challenges. She has the experience, the wisdom, the gravitas, the connections, the ideas, the energy, the optimism and the determination that we need. People love her and admire her so much — and she’s going to need every bit of that social and political capital that she has built up over the decades, because Oakland, like many other cities, is facing a big budget crisis and thorny problems. At a rally for her at the Grand Lake Theatre a couple of Saturdays ago, I got to hear from so many people at different levels of government who are excited about her campaign and are eager to work with her: - Alameda County Supervisor Nikki Fortunato Bas - Assemblymember Mia Bonta - Interim Oakland Mayor Kevin Jenkins, who said he gets calls from Barbara Lee at all hours with ideas and questions — he marveled at her energy and the depth of her knowledge of how Oakland works Her list of endorsements is very long and comprehensive, but what I think is remarkable that she is endorsed by every member of the Oakland City Council but one (whom she says is an old friend and she wouldn’t name them!) Her main opponent professes to be proud that he is not endorsed by the City Council members, because he claims it makes him “independent” — but he should know that isn’t how things work. He served one four-year term on the City Council, with very little to show for it beyond obstruction and burnt bridges. The reality is that the mayor HAS to work with the City Council and can’t go it alone. I personally feel that a guy with an MBA and so little political experience has no business running the City of Oakland, when we have a candidate with the integrity and proven leadership of Barbara Lee. I met her at a house party where she refused to take a seat and remained standing even though it was her 5th event of the day. She told the gathering about all the different sources of revenue she’s working on securing - from the County, the State, from grants, from collecting fees through offices that have been deprioritized and understaffed since the pandemic -- “to get Oakland the money it’s due.” I got to shake her hand and talk to her one-on-one, and I expressed my surprise that she was willing to take on this job, and she said she has done many hard things in her life and she’s ready to take on this challenge. She also told me that now that she isn’t flying back and forth between Washington DC and Oakland every week the way she did for so many years (three or four days in DC; three or four days in Oakland each week), she has lots more free time to throw into this. People who say she’s too old are thinking about other politicians and have not seen her in action right here and right now. She is a dynamo! Furthermore, this is only to finish out the current term. In November 2026, only 1 1/2 years from now, she will decide if she wants to keep going and we can vote on whether we want to keep her in the job. We should be so lucky! Sincerely, Jen V

Mea culpa. I have let 2 obstacles get in the way of sending the contact list out for far too long: - it isn’t 100%. There are a few folks/addresses that I haven’t confirmed - and, I’m not sure how to get it out to everyone. I can post it here, but that doesn’t cover everyone. I can send an email, but I’m not sure it would make it through spam, nor do I know if anyone would have issues being copied on an email list (even though all emails are on the list…) Any objection to my posting it here? Or to email? Thoughts? edited addition: hearing no objections in the admittedly brief time since my post, I am uploading it here. Can someone please print it for Linda and Gail? I'm out of town... Click on the following link and you should be able to download it from there. I could not figure out how to upload it to the Groups, and I'm running out the door for a flight... Grey Missing Cat
Hi all, a few folks have stopped by the block this week to look for a missing grey cat that has been spotted a few times this week. The owner moved here from Florida and lives in the Orinda. The cat went missing, and owner thinks cat ended up here- following the owner's walking route. Cat was just spotted yesterday in front of 5668 playing with the peacock. We put out some cat kibble in the front yard to see if that entices the cat. Wanted to pass this on, thanks

Fw: 10 more reasons for modest optimism
In addition to the blooming magnolias and plum trees in the 'hood, a few more reasons for optimism! Happy Friday, Oakgrovians! From: Robert Reich <robertreich@...> Sent: Friday, February 28, 2025 1:03 AM To: melissamednick@... <melissamednick@...> Subject: 10 more reasons for modest optimism Forwarded this email? Subscribe here for more 10 more reasons for modest optimism Robert Reich Feb 28 READ IN APP Friends, Since I offered you 10 reasons for modest optimism last week, discontent with the Trump-Musk regime has surged even further. America appears to be waking up. Here’s the latest evidence — 10 more reasons for modest optimism. 1. Trump’s approval ratings continue to plummet. The chief reason Trump was elected was to reduce the high costs of living — especially food, housing, health care, and gas. A new Pew poll shows these costs remain uppermost in Americans’ minds. Sixty-three percent identify inflation as an overriding problem, and 67 percent say the same about the affordability of health care. That same poll shows the public turning on Trump. The percent of those disapproving of Trump’s handling of the economy has risen to 53 percent (versus 45 percent who approve). Disapproval of his actions as president has risen to the same 53 percent versus 45 percent approval, which shows how essential economic performance is to the public’s assessment of presidents these days. The Pew poll also shows 57 percent of the public believes that Trump “has exceeded his presidential authority.” By making the world’s richest person his hatchet man, Trump has made more vivid the role of money in politics. Hence, a record-high 72 percent now say a major problem is “the role of money in politics.” Other polls show similar results. In the Post-Ipsos poll, significantly more Americans strongly disapprove of Trump (39 percent) than strongly approve of him (27 percent). Reuters, Quinnipiac University, CNN, and Gallup polls show Trump’s approval ratings plummeting (ranging from 44 percent to 47 percent). In all of these polls, more Americans now disapprove of Trump than approve of him. 2. DOGE is running amusk. DOGE looks more and more like a giant hoax. This week, reporters found that nearly 40 percent of the contracts DOGE claims to have canceled aren’t expected to save the government any money, according to the administration’s own data. As a result, on Tuesday DOGE deleted all of the five biggest “savings” on its so-called “wall of receipts.” The scale of its errors — and the misunderstandings and poor quality control that appear to underlie them — has raised questions about the effort’s broader work, which has led to mass firings and cutbacks across the federal government. DOGE has also had to reverse its firings. On Tuesday, Secretary of Veterans Affairs Douglas A. Collins celebrated cuts to 875 contracts that he claimed would save nearly $2 billion. But when veterans learned that those contracts covered medical services, recruited doctors, and funded cancer programs as well as burial services for veterans, the outcry was so loud that on Wednesday the VA rescinded the ordered cuts. After hundreds of nuclear weapons workers were abruptly fired, the Trump administration is scrambling to rehire them. After hundreds of scientists at the Food and Drug Administration were fired, they’re being asked to return. On Wednesday, Musk acknowledged that DOGE “accidentally canceled” efforts by the U.S. Agency for International Development to prevent the spread of Ebola. But Musk insisted the initiative was quickly restored. Wrong. Current and former USAID officials say Ebola prevention efforts have been largely halted since Musk and his DOGE allies moved last month to gut the global-assistance agency and freeze its outgoing payments. The teams and contractors that would be deployed to fight an Ebola outbreak have been dismantled, they added. DOGE staff are resigning. On Tuesday, 21 federal civil service tech workers resigned from DOGE, writing in a joint resignation letter that they were quitting rather than help Musk “dismantle critical public serv

HI all, the organization Empower Oakland recently conducted interviews with the two front runners in the Oakland mayoral election to be held April 15th-- Loren Taylor and Barbara Lee. The links below (in green) take you to the recorded interviews with the two candidates, their written responses to interview questions, and information about other ways to learn more about the candidates and their platforms. Oakland is at a crucial crossroad right now and needs informed citizens who vote!! Please vote on April 15th and thanks for listening! Special Election: Oakland Mayor Endorsement Forwarded this email? Subscribe here for more ?? Special Election: Oakland Mayor Endorsement Vote Loren Taylor for a new generation of Oakland leadership Feb 26 READ IN APP Last November, 60% of Oaklanders voted to recall Sheng Thao, signaling widespread frustration as our city faced serious challenges: a public safety crisis, a perpetual budget deficit pushing Oakland toward potential bankruptcy, and a lack of confidence in our city’s direction. Put simply, voters made it clear: Oakland is not on the right track. On April 15, we will elect Oakland’s next mayor. While real decision-making in our city depends on both the mayor’s office and the city council, the next mayor will have the opportunity to set the tone for our future. As with all our endorsements, we encourage voters to hear directly from the candidates: Read their responses to Empower Oakland’s detailed questionnaire Watch their in-person interviews with our endorsement committee Attend live and virtual events to ask your own questions and learn more Today, we are proud to endorse Loren Taylor for Mayor of Oakland. His vision, experience, and practical approach make him the best choice to lead Oakland forward. If you believe in a better future for Oakland, please consider donating to and/or volunteering for his campaign. Support Loren Taylor Oakland Mayor Endorsement Rank #1: Loren Taylor Loren Taylor is the most prepared candidate to be Mayor of Oakland, and all Oakland voters should rank him #1. He is the only viable candidate with experience in City Hall — and the only one championing common sense, practical ideas to improve our city. In fact, many of Oakland’s most popular reforms originated from Taylor, and are now being embraced by multiple Mayoral candidates and other leaders. He’s also presented by far the most detailed policy positions and practical plans across public safety, housing, budget stabilization, business revitalization, and government accountability. Proven Track Record As a city council member, Taylor had a track record of getting things done in Oakland: He fought back efforts to defund the police, advocating for an outcomes-focused approach to public safety Taylor authored and secured unanimous support from the city council to pass the city’s first encampment management policy He created the “Blue Ribbon Equitable Business Tax Task Force” which brought together community and business stakeholders to identify solutions that encouraged economic development Taylor’s record reflects a dedicated leader willing to take on tough problems and work across differences to deliver real solutions. Public Safety Taylor believes in fully staffing our police department, using technology to improve the efficiency of our officers, and reducing red tape that prevents police from doing their jobs. His 10-point plan on public safety is by far the most detailed plan we’ve seen from any candidate in the last year. Budget & Economic Growth Taylor understands that truly stabilizing Oakland's finances requires addressing the structural deficit — an issue he's been sounding the alarm about for years. Taylor's background in business is particularly well suited for this challenge. Taylor intends to: Focus on renegotiating the city’s contracts that are crippling our spending Purse grants and other funding opportunities to grow c

Forwarded this email? Subscribe here for more What you can do Revised and expanded Robert Reich Feb 6 READ IN APP Friends, In light of Trump II’s first 18 days of mayhem — including his and Musk’s coup against our system of government — many are asking: “What can I do now?” Here’s a revised and expanded list, in rough order of importance. 1. Protect vulnerable members of your communities who are undocumented or whose parents are undocumented. This is an urgent moral call to action. As Trump’s ICE begins roundups and deportations, many good people and their families are endangered and understandably frightened. One of Trump’s executive orders allows ICE to arrest undocumented immigrants at or near schools, places of worship, health care sites, shelters, and relief centers — thereby deterring families from sending their kids to school or getting help they need, and threatening the health and well-being of entire communities. Urge your governor and state legislature, and your mayor or city manager, to block ICE. Get your local and state lawmakers to seek federal court injunctions. Check in with their offices to see what they are doing to protect vulnerable families in your community. Join others in voluntary efforts to keep ICE away from hospitals, schools, and shelters. Meanwhile, you should order these red cards from Immigrant Legal Resources Center and make them available in and around your community: Red Cards / Tarjetas Rojas | Immigrant Legal Resource Center | ILRC. You might also find these of use: Immigration Preparedness Toolkit | Immigrant Legal Resource Center | ILRC. 2. Protect LGBTQ+ members of your community. Trump is trying to make life far more difficult for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other people through executive orders, changes in laws, alterations in civil rights laws, or changes in how such laws are enforced. His election and his rhetoric might also unleash hatefulness by bigoted people in your community. Work with others in being vigilant against prejudice and bigotry, wherever it might break out. When you see or hear it, call it out. Join with others to stop it. If you trust your local city officials, get them involved. If you trust your local police, alert them as well. 3. Help protect public officials whom Trump and his administration are targeting for vengeance. Some may be low-level officials, such as election workers. If they do not have the means to defend themselves legally, you might help them or consider a GoFundMe campaign. If you hear of anyone who seeks to harm them, immediately alert local law-enforcement officials. Other endangered people are Justice Department prosecutors and FBI agents who worked on the January 6 and Mar-a-Lago classified papers cases. You can help protect them by making sure you know what Trump’s Justice Department is trying to do to them (here’s one good source), and spreading the word. Urge your senators and House members (assuming t
