Re: Telescope for Eliza

Tough problem. I'm not sure any non-toy telescope is appropriate for a
6-year old.

Anyone have enough experience with this one to recommend it?

Hello,

My daughter, Eliza 6 years old, is interested in learning and seeing up close about everything in the space.

Where in Ottawa can we please find affordable telescopes or used?!

Thank you kindly in advance for your response.

While twisting the helical I noticed that a small crater's contrast would jump up a bit and the crater would be just a little more distinct. That seems to be where the best focus was. 3km craters are specks, but 7km and up craters show nicely. I do one thing with the camera mount, and that is to center the lens as close as I can to the eyepiece, and turn on the camera to ensure it is centered in the screen and aligned by looking at the inside of the eyepiece barrel. And even then the whole contraption I have can move slightly once on the scope :). Next time it is clear it will be either a 25mm eyepiece or 4k or perhaps working up to both :)

I'll see what I can find about the FinePix XP140.

Re: Taking and stacking Video of the moon

That's great. I'm impressed you got the point and shoot to work on the adapter, lots of people have struggled with those to be able to get the picture in focus without the AF messing things up. :) I like using my smartphone and normally do movie to PIPP to Autostakkert. I don't remember if Fuji has a Magic Lantern port for the camera -- someone presented at RASC about 5 years ago (perhaps Taras?) where they were showing?that you could load Magic Lantern on the point and shoot camera and give yourself a lot more control over the functions of the camera (making it easier to modify ISO, etc.) even when the camera itself didn't give you those options in the traditional menus. I tried it on a Canon which was decent.

I have been shooting 1080p at 59.94 fps, using a 110mm eyepiece on an old orange tube Celestron 8", with the camera zoomed to 5x. I put a helical focuser behind the eyepiece which helps me focus. The clock drive is good, and the tripod almost perfectly leveled and aligned. The video files are .MOV, and the almost 15 minutes video limit gives 4gb files. PIPP (Planetary Imaging PreProcessor) is used to whittle the files down to just over a gig which is the limit for some stackers. PIPP saves uncompressed AVIs. I have developed a liking for Planetary System Stacker which became my main stacker. Post processing done with one or more of ON1, Photoshop CS2, and Paintshop Pro 2021. The seeing was average for this, but there was a thin layer of cloud. Hoping for better skies soon.

I was out for two hours closer to dawn (with a couple of breaks) and saw 70 meteors in 85 minutes.? Most of the Geminids were mag 2 and better, the sporadics were mostly fainter ~mag 4.? I saw one point meteor.? I've been dubious of point meteor reports in the past (I think they are mostly fast satellite flashes) but this one was mag -3, had exactly the typical brightness increase and decrease over 3s of a real meteor, and was located exactly on the radiant.? One 3 minute period had eight mag 1 or better meteors including two mag 0 meteors in the sky at the same time moving in opposite directions.? Excellent!

The radiant is quite high now. And it's clear. (How unlikely). The
metors are quite bright. Easily visible from my light-polluted sky in
west ottawa.

The transparency is forecast to get worse around 1am, so get your
meteor ooohs and aaaahs in now.

Thanks for this suggestion! It's my second time borrowing this scope, but I didn't collimate it the first time. Thanks to your email, I learned a lot about collimation. Unfortunately I didn't have the 2.5mm hex wrench required to actually adjust the secondary mirror, but it was pretty close as is. I'll suggest to the library that they add a hex wrench to the kit... I bungled the finder scope, but we still managed to find the moon. ;-)

One thing is to align the finder scope to make sure it points exactly in line with the main telescope.

?

Another item is collimation.? If you don’t know what this is, somewhat longer emails will be required.? No matter how steady the atmosphere is, if your scope is not collimated, you will not get good views.

Natalka – Not to worry: try your porch or driveway.? I too live downtown and have no problem viewing Jupiter and Saturn.

?

By far, the limiting factors (in descending order) are cloudy nights (way too many), and atmospheric seeing = steadiness of the air.? (My enthusiasm also wanes the colder it gets.)

?

If anything, it is more important to try to view where your sight line is not near a neighbour’s roof or worse their chimney, and the heat rising increases the nearby atmospheric turbulence.

?

I view with a traffic light about a hand’s width from these two planets with no trouble.

Re: Mill of Kintail?

Hi Natalka,
With a new scope you are better off observing the moon and planets from your driveway.? These objects don't require a darker site.

Cheers,
Albert.

Re: Mill of Kintail?

Greetings Natalka,

Welcome to OAFs.

Sad to say the Mill of Kintail is not currently a good observing spot.

The parking lot has a streetlight. The rest of the park is dark but
there is a locked gate preventing access to the dark parts at night.

We did have star parties at the mill, But they were on pre-arranged
dates with the Mill or were don't the Mill's invitation. We no longer
have permission to do impromptu observing there.

Mill of Kintail?

Hello OAFs! New member here. I have a 1-week loan of a telescope (an Orion StarBlast II 4.5 EQ Reflector from the OPL) and want to bring some kids out to look at planets tomorrow, if the skies are clear. I'm not an RASC member so can't use their nifty observatory, but I found the OAFs website which mentions stargazing at the Mill of Kintail. Can anyone fill me in on this site? Can I just drive there tomorrow and set up (parking lot?), and is there visibility near the horizon where the planets will be?

Many thanks!
