Re: interesting jupiter tonight
The GRS and Io's shadow are easily seen. But i can't see Io itself. Seeing not as good as i had hoped. Scope also has some tube currents.

The great red spot will be on the face of jupiter tonight around
22:29, accompanied by Io and Io's shadow. This is unusual becaues Io
and it's shadow will be less than an arcsecond apart and are both
right on the north edge of the GRS.
Usually, Io is near impossible to see when its in front of jupiter.
But tonight, with the GRS and IO's shadow localizing it, it may be
possible to spot it. You'll know when you see IO, it is distinctly
yellow.

Turns out I'll need to stay closer to home this weekend, so Nirvana's out for me.? I might be able to make it out to FLO tomorrow night, but that'll be a "game time" decision. Hope you enjoy the star party.

Hi Matt,
I'm going to the North Frontenac Star Party this weekend with my brother. We're staying at the Lakeside Inn near Bon Echo.
I was planning to go see Nirvana at some point during the daytime to check it out. I've never been. A lot of people seem to like it, though, so my interest is piqued.
I have been to the North Frontenac Dark Sky Preserve once. Skies were dark, met a couple friendly astronomers, but it was fairly busy with astronomers and 'tourists' (for lack of a better word).
I think I will go to the Star Party on Friday night. I could maybe be convinced to observe at Nirvana on Saturday night.

Just curious if anyone was planning to observe at Nirvana this weekend?? I know there is the North Frontenac Star Party happening..and the weather is not certain.? Just testing the waters.

Hi all,
Had a problem with hazing over of the optics in the blocking filter in my Lunt 152, sent it back and had it back with new elements in about 3 weeks! Prices for the Lunt are high but you get what you pay for. I've seen many excellent images out of much smaller Lunts than mine.

I've known Frank for decades, but I know so little about him. It's hard to know the quiet and serene ones. Yes, he was a regular at OAFs sidewalk sessions. He once confided in me, at a post-sidewalk supper, that he handn't enjoyed his career as a translator for the government. Perhaps the perspective of a retireee. At a Texas Star Party we discovered his very rich and varied repertoir of snoring. : )
Frank will live on in the memories of the people who he touched.

Hello All -- Let me jimp into this thread.? I have a Lunt 60mm with the pressure tuner.? I¡¯m very happy with it and I use it quite often, though only visually, as the views are good.
?
I also have a 0.2 or 0.4 (not sure which) angstrom Solar Spectrum h-alpha filter set up, with a 4¡± Baader / Solar Spectrum cool ERF + 2x telecentric + 4x telecentric etc..? This is a very capable
solar filter which I¡¯ve used with a 4¡± f10 and similar refractors.? It has both cooling and heating for the critical h alpha filter so the temp can be set quite precisely to be ¡°on band¡±.? For optimal use it should be at least as f32 though I¡¯ve used it at
f20, i.e. with the 2x telecentric.? ?I also have a large iris that I¡¯ve used to stop down the front aperture to see how much difference the focal ratio makes.
?
However, I do not have a tracking mount so it is not that convenient for met to use, and it has been sitting in the closet for many years.? I keep meaning to set it up, but then get overtaken by
events.
?
While I¡¯m not in any hurry to do so, I would consider selling this very fine setup for h alpha viewing.
?
Best ¨C Michael

The white one looks to be the Lunt LS102FHa, but can't tell you if it's double-stacked, as the double-stack unit would be just in front of the focuser, which is obstructed by the mount.
The gold one looks like the Coronado 60mm, definitely not double-stacked.
I took some shots through the University of Ottawa LS102FHa a number of years ago with my cellphone, and the images came out clear.? Very impressed by it.? I knew right away, I wouldn't be happy with anything less than a 102, but you can do amazing work with

A few more quick comments about Nirvana: it looked like they might be widening the road. And there were wires tied off to trees so they wouldn¡¯t droop on the road. The driveway onto the runway not only had a steep gully on the right side (going in), but there were signs the water had washed over the road and was starting to wash it away. If you go there after the snow flies, do not expect level snow to be on top of road instead of air. And after next spring, another recon trip would be in order. ?

Hi
I noticed in the Ottawa Citizen that one of our long-time members passed away a few days ago - Frank Bayerl.? The database shows that he has been a member since 1998.? I worked with him in the early days of SmartScope and he regularly attended
our monthly meetings at CASM.

Hi Folks, Frank was a very kind, soft spoken gentleman. I first met him at the Texas Star Party decades ago! Ginny and I wish his friends and family our condolences. Have a great day. Bob

Yeah I¡¯ve been eyeing a dedicated solar scope or block as well (currently I just have a white?light filter on my EdgeHD 8¡±), had an opportunity to look through two at Starfest and the images were stunning sharp and detail (photos DO NOT do them justice). Not sure the make/model so included photo of them, I¡¯d buy these in a heart beat if I had the money.

Definitely go with Lunt.
I used to sell both, and a problem that can happen to either is a degraded filter in the blocking filter assembly (oxidation of one of the metal films).?
Meade doesn't sell or send out replacement filters, requiring a trip back to California and unknown wait time for replacement.? The last time I sent in a blocking filter to Meade, we didn't receive a replacement for about 2 years, and failed to receive one at all before the shop close down.?
Lunt will ship you the filter glass, and it's dead-easy to replace.
Point for Lunt.

I'm seriously considering the Lunt 50mm.? Andrea Girones showed a

I wanted to go with the 50mm since it has the pressure tuning
which I think is better than the tilt tuning.?
I was told by someone whose opinion I respect that you can get a
really good Coronado - if you're lucky, but that you will always
get a really good Lunt.? The Quark has the problem that you have
to buy both the prominence version and the disk version if you
want to observe both and there have been quality complaints.

Hi folks:
I have a Lunt 60mm h alpha
solar scope and I am very pleased with it.? I got it with a
double stack (add on) which really brings out the detail on
the sun's surface.? The prominences are also amazing.? I have
created a shield that blocks extraneous light getting into
your eyes as you view the solar image.? All this stuff is
expensive.? I now supplement visual solar observing with
capturing the solar diskc and flares using a camera connected
to a laptop. I can save some of images if I want.?

I remember him very fondly, he used to come out to my observatory in Stanleyville whenever I put out an invitation -- he was always a super nice, gentle, soft spoken soul! Very sad news indeed!
