Re: Solar Scope

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Yes, you can do that.? But the etalon and blocking filters are the most expensive part of the setup, and there's not much money to save from buying the parts.? Retrofitting to an existing refractor is not necessarily the best way to go.? Lunt no longer offers adapters for various lens cells, so you'd have to commission a machinist to make one for you, unless you're lucky enough to have a compatible lens cell.? You also need to correctly size the blocking filter for the particular scope and for the intended purpose (eg larger blocking filter is required when doing photography).

I recommend buying a full Ha scope.

Hi

I noticed in the Ottawa Citizen that one of our long-time members passed away a few days ago - Frank Bayerl. ?The database shows that he has been a member since 1998. ?I worked with him in the early days of SmartScope and he regularly attended our monthly meetings at CASM.

Definitely go with Lunt.

I used to sell both, and a problem that can happen to either is a degraded filter in the blocking filter assembly (oxidation of one of the metal films).?

Meade doesn't sell or send out replacement filters, requiring a trip back to California and unknown wait time for replacement.? The last time I sent in a blocking filter to Meade, we didn't receive a replacement for about 2 years, and failed to receive one at all before the shop close down.?

Lunt will ship you the filter glass, and it's dead-easy to replace.

Point for Lunt.

Thanks for the report Attilla. We saw that sign too, I expect that its about cleaning up all the felled trees from the direcho storm that we had in the spring. The road itself looked freshly graveled so I don't see what else it needed...? Did you also check out the area behind the Front obs platform which belongs to the airstrip at Tomvale?

I'm guessing the real reason for the sign is that the construction

Also for those who havent been to Nirvana before:

The right turn off the entry road, that rises steeply up to the runway
is completely impassible. Which is probably there is a new and
completely passible road forked off the impassible one about 30
degrees counter clockwise. It doesnt look it, but it also leads to the
runway. It has a washout along the south edge but that didn't cause a
problem for a comfy passenger car.

NMR says we should not setup on the runway. Most of the non-runway
areas are covered in 4 foot tall vegetation. However, we saw two
patches were one might setup scopes withut having to mow. One along
the last bit of road that leads to the runway where the gass was
sparse and only a foot tall. Another is rectangular patch a few
hundred meters south of the access road along the west side of the
runway where someone has planted low vegetation (only a couple of
inches high) and added a fire-place ring. The second looked like a
comfortable place to setup telescopes -- assuming who ever gardened
that place doesnt feel violently territorial about it.

Also about not setting up on the runway: at the north end of the
runway perhaps a 50 meter west, there is remains of a taxiway. It's
parallel to the runway and separated from it by grass. I expect NMR
cannot complain if people part RVs there. It's paved with asphalt, so
i'd still prefer not to setup on it because of the bad ground-seeing
it will produce as it releases it's daytime heat at night.

Oh, and there were still a few mosquitos.

Finally, for those who want to know where Nirvana is, The "road map"

Not that I am entitled to visit FLO, but there is a detail about laptop users that is missing from the proposal.? Not everyone with a computer is doing astrophotography. Some people use laptops and pads for guidance from live star charts and for logging observations. (E.g., I have used SkyTools for nearly 20 years now for my star maps and logging. I'm building a push-to system for my LightBridge reflector that accepts targets from SkyTools and shows where the scope is pointed on the sky.)

The rules might need to be clear that anyone with a laptop must segregate from those who are preserving their peak night vision.?
