let's do sidewalk astronomy May 18 in Kanata

As Pierre has announced, there will be a large star party at Silver
City, Gloucester for astronomy day today.

I suggest we also offer the west end a star party. I suggest we bring
scopes to the sidewalk in front of !ndigo book store in Centrum Kanata
(formerly Chapters bookstore).

I suggest we start at 18:00. We'll be able to show the daytime moon
and sunspots at the same time The moon will just about clear walkmart
then 12 degrees up. The sun will be about 24 degrees up.

3 people have offered to bring scopes. So we are go. The sidewalk has
room for about 7 to 9 scopes so more are welcome.

See you tonight.

GO for Saturday!!! - INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMY DAY - Saturday, May 18

Astronomy Day is a GO for Saturday!(tomorrow). It was a tough decision as there are fewer clouds forecast for Sunday, but more volunteers are available for Saturday. Please come and join us for a free public star party at Chapters Silver City, 2401 City Park Drive, Ottawa. Some volunteers are also interested in doing Sunday as well, so we will discuss that in person tomorrow.
?
Setup time might occur a bit later in the morning, as soon as the rain showers have ended.
?
We hope to see you there! All are welcome! : )
?
Cheers!

Re: Passing of Tom Bootland (the Bootland farm)

Oh my…. Just catching up on news here. ?That is very sad indeed. ?I had just mailed Tom a card a week ago with a gift to thank him for access over the past year. ?His property has been among my favourite sites for quiet observing in nature, only an hour’s drive from the city. ?It is always so peaceful out there.

My condolences Dalton as I see you’ve known him for a long time.

Very sad to hear of Tom’s passing. ?Tom was an ardent supporter of amateur astronomers over the years. ?I hadn’t been to Tom’s property in Stewartville in several years but his property was not only close to Ottawa but it was also nice and quiet and dark. ?It was also perfectly situated which resulted in a fairly narrow light dome coming from Ottawa. ?Tom had always mowed a large observing area of grass for us to set up our telescopes which was going the extra mile to accommodate our hobby. ?Rest in Peace Tom.

I'm sorry to hear of Tom Bootland's passing. I know he had given standing permission? to the OAOG for astonomers to observe from his farm.

Now that he is gone, we should know if Tom's sucessors are willing to continue the permission. Tom was a nice guy. We shoulnt assume about his sucessors.

Perhaps Pierre Martin would know. Pierre had been organizing yearly thank-you gifts for Tom.

(Please also advise me if or when the Bootland Farm clear sky chart should be removed.)

Finally, is there a way for astronomers to commemerate Tom? A dedicated star party perhaps?

Oh yes. I miss sidewalk. If the clouds permit, I’ll certainly come Sunday.

Actually, the cloud forecast for Saturday does not look good. I
suggest Sunday is more likely (Sunday is also the OAOG's backup date.)

Since Jupiter is in the same direction of as the Sun, we will have
only craters on the moon and sunspots on the sun to show. So I suggest
an afternoon session as we could show both the moon and the sun at the
same time. (Daytime moon often amuses the public since many don't
realize the moon is visible during the day -- even though the contrast
is lower than nightime moon.)

Experience says we should arrange for at least 3 telescopes.

who is interested?

This is from may 9. Shot through a 110 mm eyepiece on 11 times zoom. I used an Astrozap full apparture orange solar filter on an orange tube 8" Celestron. Some 20K frames, whittled down to 2K and converted to B&W in PIPP. Further reduced in AviStack2 to 20 and stacked. Major sharpening done with Planetary System Stacker's wavelets. Polishing done in PaintShop Pro '23. I am continually amazed as to what those wavelets can extract from a fuzzy? image. I am also amazed of AviStack2's ability to find? the X best fuzzy images and stack them with enough data for wavelets to extract. I'm still playing with them :)

Definitely a large all-Sky aurora happening now. ? Quite cloudy here in Dunrobin but you can still see a brighter sky and the colourful veils between the clouds.?

Taking to my friend near Perth he is seeing a terrific display with clearer skies.

Folks,

Here's a photo my brother took from the Holleford Crater north of Kingston this evening. Unfortunately my skies are clouded-out.
