Fw: URGENT: TODAY: Measure X - Budget Hearing Advocacy
Hi everyone, I am sending this again so you won't have to look for it. The most important time to advocate for Older Adults education at the Board of Supervisors budget hearing is TODAY, Tuesday, April 23 around mid-day. The more people the supervisors hear from, the more likely they are to support funding for the West Contra Costa Adult Education Older Adults program through Measure X. Please zoom in if you can! Information on how to join the meeting is below. Advocating for WCCAE Older Adults Program
Hi everyone, Below is an excerpt from the West Contra Costa Adult Education principal's weekly newsletter. First, I would like to thank the principal for getting this information to all adult school teachers; it's great to have his support for the Older Adults program. Please see below for an important opportunity to advocate for funding for the WCCAE Older Adults program through Contra Costa County Measure X funds. Kristen ADVOCATING FOR OLDER ADULTS The most important upcoming opportunity for advocating for funding for our Older Adult Program is at the Board of Supervisors upcoming budget hearings this Monday and Tuesday. This is where the Board of Supervisors will decide on how to allocate the one-time projected surplus in Measure X funds totaling $28 million. They will be deciding on many other things related to the County¡¯s FY24-25 budget, but the use of Measure X funds for Older Adults is our main concern. Dear CPFA, SDAFA and OAEF Members, On Saturday, April 20th, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the California Part-time Faculty Association (CPFA) will be hosting its annual conference virtually via Zoom. Registration for the event is required, but it¡¯s free and all part-time faculty allies are welcome. This year¡¯s highlights include a panel on the One-Tier Model, and a discussion on Assembly Bill 2277 (AB 2277), which deals with raising the part-time teaching cap from 60% to 85% of a full-time teaching course load. Authored by Assemblymember Greg Wallis, AB 2277 is now moving through the California State Legislature. The final presentation at this year¡¯s conference will be by Suzie Dixon, president of the California Retired Teachers Association, (CalRTA) concerning the elimination of the WEP/GPO. The WEP/GPO (Windfall Elimination Period / Government Pension Offset) greatly impacts most part-time faculty when they retire. Working for an employer who didn¡¯t withhold Social Security taxes can reduce your final Social Security benefit in retirement. If retirement is on your mind ¨C please register and join our conference for vital information that may save you undue heartache when you retire! For Forum - CDC Facts on Health Impacts of Loneliness
The Costs of Social Isolation and Loneliness Loneliness costs the US economy an estimated $406 billion a year14, in addition to the estimated $6.7 billion a year in Medicare costs for socially isolated older adults.15 Older and Isolated Nearly 1 in 4 adults aged 65 and older are socially isolated.5 Increased Health Risks Social isolation increases your risk5 of: Dementia by 50% Heart disease by 29% Stroke by 32% Research suggests that loneliness impacts some groups more than others,5,8,9 including: Low-income adults. Young adults. Older adults. Adults living alone. People with chronic diseases and disabilities. Immigrants. Individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (or queer). Thought from Cynthia: Adult Education is already a place where immigrants feel welcomed --- adding state funded OA classes to what AE offers makes so much sense. Also: Adult Schools are also still mandated to provided state funded classes for Adults with Disabilities - though not that many do. But again - crossover with elders - as elders have higher percentage of people with disabilities. https://www.cdc.gov/emotional-wellbeing/social-connectedness/loneliness.htm#:~:text=The%20Costs%20of%20Social%20Isolation,for%20socially%20isolated%20older%20adults.

COABE Journal and AAACE Conference
COABE is a national Adult Ed organization. Statewide orgs such as CCAE are affiliated with it. COABE just finished out their national conference. COABE does great work is and is very well run. They have a journal that comes out four times a year and each issue has a theme. The newest theme is Advocacy. Marina Kravtsova and I co-wrote an article about Advocacy and English Learner Adult Ed students. I didn't think to alert you all to the call for articles - as of course, someone from OAEF could have submitted an article on advocacy and Older Adults Adult Ed. The article process is - in my opinion - pretty trying - but if you succeed at it - you can reach a national audience. Sharing all this with you so it's on your radar. If you see a future theme that you think connects with OAEF goals, I encourage you to submit a proposal for an article. I'm happy to support but definitely do NOT volunteer to co-write such an article (just as an fyi, lol). FYI, AAACE is another national Adult Ed organization -- and more academic in orientation. I presented at an AAACE Conference in 2023 - and there was another presentation that focused on Older Adults. The next AAACE Conference will be in Reno and the call is out now for conference proposals. I believe you can apply to present both in person and remotely. Cynthia Cynthia
