Hi Older Adults Education Forever folks, The attached letter went out to all recipients on Thursday, August 3. This has been a long-term project, and it it satisfying to see it finally completed. Hopefully it will e a significant help to our cause, and help raise awareness for the need to fund education for older adults. Many thanks to all the people who got signatures from various organizations. I think the signature page is quite impressive. At our upcoming meeting 08/13, we can discuss how to get the word out about this letter. I think we can post it on social media. What other ways can we use to spread the word? Kristen

According to 2021 data, more than 55.8 million adults ages 65 and older live in the U.S., accounting for about 16.8% of the nation’s population. By 2040, that proportion is projected to grow to 22%. When the last of the baby boomer generation ages into older adulthood in 2030, estimates suggest there will be more than 73.1 million older adults living in the U.S. The demographics of the older adult population are also evolving. Historically, more women than men have lived past age 65. While this trend will likely continue, the age gap between men and women is expected to shrink in the coming decades. The older adult population will also become more racially and ethnically diverse: By 2040, it is expected that racial and ethnic minorities will make up 34% of the population ages 65 and older, after increasing from 20% to 24% between 2010 and 2020. In 2021, 10.6 million older adults were in the labor force and in 2020 the median annual income for an older adult was $26,668 ($35,808 for men and $21,245 for women). The major health problems facing the older adult population are changing as well. The baby boomer generation has higher rates of obesity and chronic conditions than previous generations, which will likely change the amount and type of care they require. In general, older adults face more complex health challenges than younger populations. These may include developing aging-related chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease or Alzheimer's disease, as well as challenges with finding their next meal, living safely in their home, getting enough sleep at night and accessing medical care. Caring for older adults can be challenging. In 2020, there were an estimated 53 million caregivers in the U.S., about half of whom were taking care of a parent or parent-in-law. The adult school where I work is part of the Contra Costa County Adult Education Consortium, which includes Contra Costa College, Diablo Valley College, and Los Medanos College. It is the goal of many of our adult school English as a Second Language students to go on to community college after they improve their language skills in adult school. AB811 would remove a barrier to community college success for our English as a Second Language students, who sometimes need to repeat language courses in order to attain the ability they need to master the material in their academic courses and demonstrate their understanding. It is crucial that our ESL students attain the level of literacy, oral fluency and writing ability that will allow them to fulfill their full potential, and sometimes that cannot be achieved by taking a course only once, especially if the student receives a barely passing grade the first time through. When ESL students can only take a course once and must go on to the next course, even if they barely understood the material well enough to pass, they may fall farther and farther behind and eventually give up. This is a tragic waste of their considerable potential. I also support AB 811 because it allows for increasing skills and provides students with the opportunity to have a more well-rounded arts education. This is important not only for young adult students preparing for life and careers after college, Courses that AB811 will make repeatable, courses in language, arts and music, are courses that appeal strongly to older adults and lifelong learners. Providing better educational opportunities for older citizens is in line with the goals of the California Master Plan for Aging, because engagement in learning promotes healthy aging. Contra Costa County has recently recognized the importance of educational opportunities for older adults by awarding a grant to West Contra Costa Adult Education to help us serve seniors better through our Older Adults program. Providing more access to education for older adults, as AB811 does, should be a growing trend in California as we prepare for our over-65 population to expand significantly in the coming decad

Hi everyone, AB11 (Fong) goes before the California Senate Education Committee on July 12, and it needs our support. This bill would allow students to repeat community college courses they need to graduate. The current laws which disallow repetition create a barrier, especially for ESL students, first generation students and adult learners. Hi everyone, The attached letter to California legislators and policy makers requesting that funding for Older Adults education programs be restored will go out on July 15. In the meantime, we can continue to gather signatures. If you know of organizations, elected officials or individuals who might want to sign on, please ask them if they will sign. The more signatures we have, the better. They don't need to physically sign the letter; we just need to know how they want the name to appear. On the attached letter, you can see how the signatures of the organizations that have already agreed to sign are done.
