How could AI be used to coach seniors on using computers?

Dear OAEF Forum
I was listening to the KQED radio show Forum today (9-10 and 10-11 AM)¡ª the second hour was about AI and its uses in teaching and tutoring. The guest was Mr. Kahn, founder of Kahn Academy (tutoring for younger students). They just had a call-in from a school music teacher who uses AI as a tool to help her students!

I was just wondering, how could AI be used to teach older adults how to make better use of their computers and cell phones? But would older adults who aren¡¯t computer literate be able to access an AI tutoring program, in order to benefit from a lesson on the subject they want to learn? Would they even know what subject they should be looking up (unless it is something simple like ¡°send an email to my grand-daughter¡± or ¡°find ukulele tutorials¡±).

The show repeats tonight on the local Bay Area radio station KQED (maybe 9 PM) ¡ª and we should be able to get a podcast of it on KQED online, once the humans do the editing and post it!

Linda C.

PS - (And as for me ¡ I just subscribed to ¡°Grammarly" to try to editing some of my emails -- but I still have not figured out how to use it at all! Grammarly keeps prompting me: ¡°I guess you have not been doing much writing recently¡±!)

Older Adults Education Forum Follow Up 06/02

Hi everyone,

A meeting to follow up on the Save Older Adults Education in California forum that took place on May 11 will take place next Sunday, June 2 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. This meeting will be a chance to discuss what we learned at the forum and brainstorm about next steps.? Here is the link for the follow up meeting:

https://us06web.zoom.us/j/83636555477?pwd=OWdTVGsyYW1RRGk5OTA0Yk9lN2RWZz09

Meeting ID: 836 3655 5477
Passcode: 576387

Older adults education advocates who were unable to attend the forum are welcome to join the follow-up meeting if interested.

I am attaching my notes from panel discussion that took place at the May 11 forum.? I hope they will compensate to some extent for the lack of a complete recording of the discussion, which was very informative.? These are my own notes and may contain errors. Please let me know if I got something wrong. I'm sending them out now so people will have something to review before the follow up meeting. Again, I apologize that I am in the learning stages of recording meetings and sharing the recordings.

I hope to see you at next week's follow up meeting.? Also, there is a regular meeting of Older Adults Education Forever on Sunday, June 23 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM.

Re: Justice in Aging remarks on CA May Revise Budget and Older Population

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Thank you, Cynthia! Interesting article.

Not being politically in the know, I saw ¡°May Revise¡± and did not realize it meant the May revision (that was not in favor of older adults). ?At first I thought it meant that ¡°maybe they would revise the budget.¡± ?Guess I was wrong!

Improving Access to Oral Health Through Medicaid HCBS Waivers

When: Thursday, May 16, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. PT/2:00 p.m. ET ¨C 12 p.m. PT/3:00 p.m. ET

Older adults and people with disabilities experience significant poor oral health outcomes. One's income, race, disability, and state of residence all impact access to oral health and oral health outcomes. This is because oral health coverage is not universal and even where coverage is available, older adults and people with disabilities face unique barriers to accessing care to improve their oral health.?

The inclusion of oral health services in Medicaid Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) waivers could help to address these disparities and improve oral health outcomes for older adults and people with disabilities.?

This webinar, , will provide an overview of oral health coverage for older adults and people with disabilities, why oral health is so critical to overall health, and the barriers these populations face in accessing oral health care. The session will highlight ways in which Medicaid waivers can act to address these barriers and provide webinar participants with steps they can take to advocate for inclusion of oral health services in their state¡¯s Medicaid waivers.

Who Should Participate:
Oral health, aging, and disability advocates and providers.

Presenters:
Amber Christ, Managing Director, Health Advocacy
Samantha Morales, Senior Policy Advocate

The webinar will take place on Thursday, May 16, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. PT/2:00 p.m. ET ¨C 12 p.m. PT/3:00 p.m. ET.??

Capacity for this session is limited to 1,000 participants, and all participants will have the option of accessing audio through the computer or by phone. Closed captioning will be available. Please be sure to log onto the webinar a few minutes early in order to secure your place for the live presentation on Zoom. The presentation will be recorded and available for later viewing.?If you would like to request ASL interpretation or have other accessibility related questions, please email .?ASL requests should be submitted by Friday, May 3.

Re: OAEF Forum Chat Notes

Dear Marille and All,

You can get a paper copy thru various means:

1.? Print it out from your computer
2. Copy the information (right click and then copy) and then paste (right click and paste) into the body of an email and ask a friend to print for you.?

There are other ways, too.

I can't print it for you because I have a printer situation with very limited ink.

You teach at CCSF?? I'm wondering if a friend there can help you.

Sincerely,

Cynthia

Dear Cynthia,

Is it possible to make a paper copy of the notes? ?I tried a couple of times using two different approaches, but it didn¡¯t work.

So much to say for not having computer skills.

Thank you for the notes.

With gratitude,

Marilee

She used the cover as her Zoom image when she was not on screen.

SAVE OLDER ADULTS EDUCATION IN CALIFORNIA!

Older Adults Education Forever (OAEF) FREE ONLINE FORUM on the state of educational opportunities for adults over 55 in California, ?Saturday, May 11 from 10:00 to 12:00 PM.

Why are educational opportunities for seniors, one of the most effective ways to maintain and build health for elders while combatting loneliness, disappearing at an alarming rate?

Especially since:

Adults over 65 are the fastest growing population in California;

The U.S. Surgeon General has identified isolation and loneliness as public health risks, with people over the age of 65 especially affected;

California has adopted a Master Plan for Aging and is committed to a state ¡°for all ages and stages¡± by 2030;

Gains in senior health and well-being from a statewide program providing educational opportunities for older adults could save the state money!

Older Adults Education Forever (OAEF) an advocacy network of Older Adults students, teachers, and supporters invites you to find out more.? Here is the link to register:

In the past, Sue Frey was reporter (now retired) for Edsource and some of us had a good connection with her - which led to coverage of advocacy efforts.

Edsource is wonky journal with political impact. If we can reach them and get coverage by them, it will help.

A look back at the "Reformation"

Thinking about Edsource - and the "reformation" that got us here --- I found this article:

There's nothing mentioned about AE in the article - but lots in the comments.

That's how it so often went ---? lots of talk about reform -- why it was so "exciting" and important etc. etc. --- but very little talk of Adult Ed -- which was the branch MOST ALTERED by the "reformation" of Public Ed in CA in the wake of the Financial Meltdown.

I will NEVER forgive and forget the elimination of State funding for Financial Literacy in Adult Education.

So many people were devastated by the Financial crisis of 2008-09. People lost homes, jobs, etc.?

State response - eliminate free classes that help people navigate, understand, and plan for the inevitable ups and downs of economic life.

Sigh ---?

Okay --- just had to add!

So many memories! Not all of them good!

But this advocacy work is how I met wonderful folks like Kristen!?

And why I ended up learning about and running social media for school and advocacy purposes.
