Re: Invitation to join our next CFE meeting

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Dear Linda,
? ?Thank you for sending the notice about the upcoming meeting on Sept. 7. ?I would definitely like to
attend as a member of OAEF and?
also as a member of HEAT, Higher
Education Action Team from CCSF.
CCSF¡¯s concerns regarding tiers
for faculty are the same and it appears to me that forming larger coalitions around this issue is essential if faculties expect change.

Hi Linda,

Our two faculty groups are in my mind working on some of the same issues of pay, working conditions, etc. and thought you and/or someone from your group might like to attend our next meeting. I will get you the URL for the zoom on Tuesday, but out meeting is this Thursday, Sept. 7,? from 10-11:30 am.? CFE is the Campaign for Faculty Equality, and our main thrust is that the community colleges need a one tier system for all faculty, instead of the present 3 tier system.? We currently have 20% full time (FTF) tenured faculty, PTF (part time faculty) who have far fewer benefits, certainly no sabbaticals or fabulous medical, dental, eye care, etc. nor offices, computers, etc. plus teach whatever is left after the FTF select what they want to teach.? Our 3rd tier is noncredit courses for older adults, disabled, etc. and they make slightly more than half what PTF make in for-credit, up to now haven't had paid office hours, nor much of any benefits other than sick leave, and no academic freedom, etc.

By advocating for one tier--all would be paid on the same pay scale based on the amount they taught, all would have proportional identical benefits, all would have some job security--which PTF and non credit faculty don't have at all, and all would have academic freedom.
We have started a major movement with unions, academic senates, and FACCC (faculty association of CA. Community Colleges) all deciding they need to do something to take us seriously, as this becomes a real movement across the US.

Anyway, let me know if you can make the zoom or if someone else from your org would like to be invited to see how we are doing this, where we are going with it, etc.
Thinking of you,
Donna

Disaster Prep for Caregivers of Older Adults - and for Places that serve Older Adults -- like OA classes!

Hi Folks,

I saw this via my SF Village newsletter:?

Provider Ready: Preparedness for Older Adult Service Providers?

Wednesday, September 6 from 730am to 9am
Online
Register?

?

Please join the Region 2 National Preparedness Division in collaboration with the Administration for Community Living (ACL), Office of Policy, Planning and Innovation (OPPI - SAMHSA), and Schoharie County, NY Area Agency on Aging for a webinar on Preparedness for Older Adult Service Providers.?

Many older adults depend on community service providers for necessities and psychosocial support. However, these crucial services may be disrupted during disaster, impacting older adults in your community. This workshop prepares organizations that provide critical support services to older adults. The webinar will discuss continuity of operations, preparedness planning for older adults, disaster mental health issues and case studies.

Who should attend? The whole community, workplace management, family members and other care givers, federal, state and local agencies, community and faith-based organizations.

Sharing the OAEF letter on Social Media

Hi OAEF Folks,

I posted the letter we wrote to the AEM (Adult Education Matters) blog.
Here is a link to the post:?

You can now easily share the letter on your social media by copying and pasting that link to your social media. When you click "post," it will show up with an image - our logo that was used on the t-shirts.?

Strongly suggest:?

In addition to copying and pasting, add some test such as?

"OAEF speaks up about the value of Older Adults Classes and the importance of including them in State of CA budget for Adult Education. Read the letter to learn more."??

Add hashtags:

#OAEF?
#OlderAdultsAdultEducation
#AdultEducationMatters

You can "tag in" an elected official. To do this, you'll need to find the elected official on the form of social media you're using - Facebook, Instagram, Twitter (X), etc. Copy and paste their "address" from social media.?

For example, here is Assembly Kevin McCarty on Facebook:?

Use the @ sign to tag someone in.

IMPORTANT:? If you "tag in" someone, they will know you are tagging them in - so make sure it's win-win.?

Example,? ?@KevinMcCarty has shown strong support of Adult Education. We know that he will understand why Older Adults classes are important to include in the budget for #AdultEducation.?

Especially if an elected has done something good, you want to tag them in on social. This gives them credit and attention for doing good things - their "followers" on social will see it (if they have set up their social that way).?

I could blather on much longer - but that's why I gave the presentation on social media last summer!

I hope this will help you. Maybe I can explain more at a future meeting.?

Cynthia

Questions for candidates about Older Adults education

Hi everyone,

As promised at our Older Adults Education Forever meeting, I am sending the list of questions about educational opportunities for Older Adults we have compiled for unions and other organizations to ask candidates who are seeking endorsements.? Organizations that support state funded educational opportunities for adults over 55 can use these questions to raise awareness of the issue in candidates and help select candidates who will support education for older adults when they get into office.

August 15, 1-2:30 PM, Tim Redmond, the foremost SF political reporter shares his thoughts.

Progressives and moderates both have reason to worry about their respective political futures in SF. ?In the recent past, progressives have suffered several defeats and that trend could continue without a galvanizing, countervailing force. ?¡°Moderate" Mayor Breed is seen as ineffective, so she's vulnerable to a challenge in next year¡¯s race for SF mayor. ?Yet no clearly progressive mayoral candidate has appeared to challenge her, and without that, issues we progressives care about are a lot less likely to be raised during the campaign. What is the future of progressive politics and policy in SF? ?What issues matter to you; ?who in SF is fighting effectively for them; ?and how can we maintain SF¡¯s reputation as a city where creativity, social justice and grass roots organizing combine to put our city on the leading edge of US cities with a positive future?

Tim Redmond is the foremost progressive journalist and analyst whose focus is SF. ?
