I have attached a letter OAEF has been gathering signatures for.? We have discussed this letter at several of our meetings; it got put on the back burner because we were gathering endorsements for a possible resolution by the California Democratic Party.? Now that the resolution has been submitted, we should try to get this letter mailed out soon.
The signatures that appear on the letter are the ones I have gotten confirmed so far. Do you know of other groups that might be interested in signing?
This letter is actually a follow up to a letter that was sent by California Council for Adult Education (CCAE).? The original letter appears on their website:? ?
The letter from CCAE is significant, because it is the first time they have criticized the California Adult Education Program (CAEP), a new system for funding the state's adult schools which was implemented in 2013.? Part of the CAEP model was the defunding of Older Adults education programs in adult schools.? A perhaps unintended consequence was that Older Adults programs in community colleges were also weakened. The CAEP reorganization of adult schools sent a strong signal that the state doesn't value Older Adults education.
CCAE's complaint is very different from ours; they have complaints about funding mechanisms and not getting their money in an efficient way.? What is significant is the CCAE is rebelling a little bit, as they usually go along to get along with Sacramento's program. The idea of our letter is to say that we also have a problem with CAEP, and while you are correcting CAEP why not correct the huge injustice that was the defunding of Older Adults programs?
Please show this letter to any organizations you think might be interested in signing on. Let's set a deadline of getting the letter out by the end of May, with some flexibility for organizations who know they are interested in signing but need more time to get approval.
