Hi Cynthia,

Yes, there is a timeline, which I should have mentioned.? The timeline on the endorsements is pretty tight - end of April.?

The budget info and research articles can be later, but as soon as possible.

Hi Older Adults education advocates,

California Alliance for Retired Americans (CARA) plans to bring the resolution below to the California state Democratic Party, and they need endorsers.? If you know of organizations or individuals who might endorse, please ask for their endorsement.??

For organizations, we need:? Name of the organization and the name of the person who authorized the endorsement

For individuals, we need: Name, profession, and where they live (city)

If you could get endorsements from elected officials, that would be particularly helpful.

You can send any endorsements to me at kpursley@... and I will pass them along.

Also, down the road, CARA will propose restored Older Adults education as a budget item, hopefully for next year.? For that, it would be very helpful to know what the state was spending on Older Adults education before 2013, when state funding for the adult school programs was ended.? Even information about what was spent on Older Adults programs in individual districts would be helpful, so if you have information on what your district was spending on its Older Adults program before 2013, please let me know so I can pass the information along.

Also needed is any research about the benefits of Older Adults education, especially as regards how it can save the state money through improved senior health, increased volunteerism, etc.

Kristen

Subject: Resolution for approval by CARA Subcommittee on Older Adult Education for California

RESOLUTION In Support of California Restoring the Funding for Older Adult School Classes

WHEREAS, education programs for older adults are a low-cost, effective way to combat isolation and promote healthy aging that can reduce the likelihood of participants contracting dementia by 18 %. and can save the state money by improving healthy life expectancy, and

WHEREAS, California, recognizing the importance of combatting isolation in seniors, provided free, state funded education programs for seniors through adult schools and community colleges? from 1950 until 2013 when these programs were completely defunded in adult schools and began to be reduced in the community colleges, and

WHEREAS, The recent California Masterplan for Aging, which seeks to establish ¡°A California for all ages¡± by 2030, has as one of its goals: Inclusion and Equity, not Isolation for California¡¯s seniors, and adult schools and community colleges still have the capacity to provide education for older adults in order to fulfill the goals of the Master Plan on Aging,

THEREFORE be it resolved, that the California Democratic Party take action on its belief, as stated in the Party¡¯s Educational plank, of its platform, that supports adult education and life-long learning by advocating for the funding of the older adult education throughout the state and proclaiming the advantages of providing our aging population with opportunities for mental stimulation and socialization for the Older Adult Community and that it recognizes the funding of these programs is necessary to fulfill the goals of the California Master Plan on Aging, as well as cost effective and?

THEREFORE Be it Finally Resolved, that the California Democratic party supports, recommends and advocates for California to restore the funding for Older Adult Education programs, using the mechanisms as previously used for OAE (school districts and/or the community colleges) for the administration of program funds and expenses.?

?Dear CARA Political Director Mr. Dwane Camp Jr.

As requested I am sending ?the names (and email addresses) of people who have said that they want ?to be on the newly formed CARA OAE subcommittee: Jo Carson, Sara Cleveland, Hene Kelly, Kristen Pursley, Madeline Kronenburg and myself. ?

Yes, we are all are members of CARA.

Kristen Pursley is a retired teacher (but still teaching) and is the the Chair of the Older Adult Education Forever committee that started this movement towards renewing California¡¯s commitment to lifelong learning. OAEF started in West County (in Contra Costa County) but now has members in other areas in CCC and other countries.

Thank you Hene Kelly for supporting and promoting this issue and thank you Dwane and CARA for taking this on. I know that we are all busy and that we are making the time because we are committed to the reinstitution of free lifelong education that includes the arts, for the residents of California.
