Duncan McDonald (1849–1937) led a remarkable life as an entrepreneur, tribal leader, historian, and cultural broker on the Flathead Indian Reservation in western Montana. The mixed-blood son of a Hudson’s Bay Company fur trader and a Nez Perce Indian woman, Duncan accompanied the Pend d’Oreille Indians on a buffalo hunt and horse-stealing expedition to the Montana plains during the early 1870s. During the late nineteenth century he was put in charge of Fort Connah, the Hudson’s Bay Company post on the Flathead Indian Reservation, and worked as an independent trader across the northern Rocky Mountains. Duncan established a hotel and restaurant, among other businesses, on the Flathead Reservation. In 1878 and 1879 he wrote a history of the 1877 Nez Perce Indian War, which was published in a Deer Lodge, Montana, newspaper. Long a thorn in the side of Flathead Indian agents, Duncan was chairman of the Flathead Business Committee between 1909 and 1924 and for many years represented the interests and views of tribal members to the Montana white community. My Mom once told me that she walked into a room where a couple of friends were discussing her, they didn’t know she was there. She shook her head, smiled and walked away. My Mom also told me that she had a friend who talked bad about her, she never knew that Mom found out, Mom never mentioned it. She smiled and walked away from this friendship. She told me she had family who chose to shift her out of their life because she stood up for herself for a change. And because she stopped crossing oceans for them when they would not even help her cross a bridge. She smiled, shook her head and walked away. So I asked her how she could just walk away from people that betrayed her while pretending to be her friends or family. She answered that every time she came to a crossroad like that, she had to decide who will be going forward on her journey with her. This showed her who she cannot take along with her. So she explained to me that you should never get mad at a person who betrays you, even in the name of friendship or family. Just gracefully bow out and enjoy your journey with all the new people you’ll meet along the way. Mother's Day weekend is a wonderful time set aside to honor our mothers. Mothers certainly deserve a special day of recognition for all the selfless acts of affection and service they provide for their families. I also recognize that Mother's Day can be a difficult day for many people. There are some women who wanted very much to become mothers but they could not. There are some who have lost children, suffered miscarriage, or have a wayward child who has broken their hearts. There are also children who had absent mothers or mothers with serious problems. And then there are those whose mothers have passed away and they can no longer enjoy a visit or conversation with them. In all of these instances, there is an undeniable pain associated with this weekend. Your thoughtfulness towards them can help soothe wounds that take years to heal. During this holiday, it is important express love and affirmation to the mothers and mother-figures in your life. Show kindness to those who have been there for you.
