Shana Tova from Rav Fanger and the English office

The most beautiful painting, as well as long journeys, are made up of many brush strokes, and many small precise steps. Step after step, heel after heel, a drop of paint followed by another drop, until the painting appears in its entirety and in all its glory. Until the road comes to an end and the person reaches his destination.
The road to Rosh Hashanah is long and full of obstacles. Many stains cover a person's sheet, and he has to work to remove?the?blemishes and mold his Rosh Hashanah. The journey is long, yet short. One small step, step by step,?is the beginning of the long journey? One?brush stroke joining the other until the painting is complete.
Each and every person creates his or her own Rosh Hashanah.
Three books?are opened?on Rosh Hashanah -Tzadikim, Reshaim, and?Benoni.??You write yourself in whichever book you choose.?Written?by decisions?- "What do I choose to be?"?The holy rabbi "Toldot Yaakov Yosef"?writes-dependent on how a?person decides in his mind how he will behave?in the coming year that?it is?what will be?written?for him?from above. Take upon yourself a?positive resolution?for Rosh Hashanah, a?positive action,?behavior, one mitzvah that you may have neglected last year.?
Let?us?come?to Rosh Hashana?with a "gift" in hand for?the upcoming year may it be filled with only good. May it be His will that we are?privileged to be written in the book of the righteous immediately for a good life and peace out of faith, joy, unity, and love.

Hiding from Supplicants

Said the Koretzer: "It is the royal etiquette that if guilty persons succeed in seeing the King, He pardons them. To prevent wholesale pardons, the King hides himself from the supplicants. It is thus with the King of Kings: He conceals Himself on the Judgment Day and we seek for the key which will open the door to the place of His hiding. We try our customary prayers, our hymns amd special prayers, the blowing of the shofar, and the varied intonations for the reading of the Torah. And when the traditional keys have all beeen used, one of them will surely open the hiding place of the Lord."

DON¡¯T TALK DURING DAVENING. SHANA TOVA

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

SOURCES FOR NOT TALKING DURING DAVENING-FROM?

1) It is extremely important to refrain from talking ¡°Sichas Chulin- mundane conversation¡± in a Shul, especially during davening and surely during Chazaras HaShatz and Krias HaTorah.

One who talks during Chazaras HaShatz is a sinner, and this sin is too great for any individual?to bear (This is the one and only place the Shulchan Aruch uses such language regarding not keeping a Halacha. The reason for this?is that just as when Kayin killed Hevel he virtually killed half of the world and Hashem told him that his sin is too great to bear, so too one who talks during davening is not only harming himself, but he/she is harming their children and all the other people in the Tzibbur, as when there is talking in Shul it causes the Shechinah to leave, and causes the tefilos of the entire shul to not be ¡°heard and¡± accepted by Hashem.?Based on Tosefos Yom Tov, Sefer HaGan Derech Moshe, Igeres HaKodesh of MaHarDaB of Lubavitch?and other commentaries)

?

2) All Jews are instructed to [respectfully] chastise anyone who talks during Chazaras HaShatz. It should first be done in a way that the offender isn¡¯t being singled out, rather a s a general ¡°announcement¡± to the Shul that it is too noisy. If that doesn¡¯t work, the individual should be approached quietly.

?

If one is told to be quiet and he ridicules the person rebuking him/her, they are subject to the [ quite unpleasant] rules prescribed in the Rambam?(Hilchos De¡¯os Perek 6:7) and may eventually be barred from?entering the Shul. If one will talk in Shul, it is better for him/her to not come in the first place?(Kaf HaChaim Siman 151:8 and Chida in Sefer Pesach Einayim)

?

This is not a Minhag (custom), Chumra (stringency) or Midas Chasidus (something only pious people do). It is an undisputed Halacha Mefureshes in Shulchan Aruch Siman 124:7 with its source in the words of Chazal and the Rishonim.

?

3) Many sharp words have been written about the gravity and dire consequences of transgressing the sin of talking during davening, yet unfortunately too many otherwise religious Jews are still very lax when it comes to talking in Shul. Below is just a small sampling of the plethora of sources bemoaning this sinful practice, in the hopes that it may help people to start taking this Halacha more seriously and thus hasten the coming of Mashiach:

¡¤????????One who talks?while the Tzibbur is praising Hashem Yisborach (i.e. during Chazaras HaShatz) is showing that he wants no part in [the praising of] Hashem?(Shulchan Aruch HaRav Siman 124:10 quoting the?Zohar in Parshas Terumah)

¡¤????????Woe is to those that talk during Chazaras HaShatz, as many Shuls throughout Jewish history have been destroyed due to this sin.?(Mishna Berura 124:27 quoting the Elya Rabbah)

¡¤????????Many Shuls have been turned into churches due to the fact that talking took place in those Shuls.?(Mogen Avraham Siman 151)

¡¤????????One who talks during davening, his mouth becomes ¡°Tamei- impure¡±, and when he davens with this mouth it is as if he is being Oved Avoda Zara- serving idols?(Drashos Chasam Sofer Vol. 2?Drasha for 7 Av)

¡¤????????One who [habitually] talks during davening has no portion in Olam Haba, the world to come.?(Sefer M¡¯Am Loez Parshas Bamidbar)

¡¤????????The holy Rebbe of Gur, the Imrei Emes Zatzal, was known to have said that the tragedy of the holocaust that befell the Jewish people and cost us 6,000,000 lives, was brought upon us due to the sin of talking during davening, and the reason the Sephardic communities were for the most part spared, was due to their being scrupulous in not talking during davening?(Quoted in Sefer Tuvecha Yabiu Vol. 2 Page 321)

¡¤????????Talking during Tefilah is delaying?the Geulah (final redemption/coming of Mashiach)?(Sefer Yesh Nochlin from?the father of the Shl¡±a HaKadosh. See also Sefer Mikdash Me¡¯at Page 27 and Shu¡±t Yabia Omer Vol. 1 Siman?10:11)

¡¤????????Talking during davening is the worst sin a Jew can do! It causes the Yetzer Hara to become empowered over the person, and one who talks during davening is a Choteh U¡¯Machtee Es HaRabim- causes others to follow in his ways and sin as well, and is degrading the glory of Hashem?(Sefer Yesh Nochlin ibid.)

?

4) Every Shul should appoint?a G-d fearing, strong person to be a Mashgiach to??reprimand and punish those who talk during davening?(Vavei HaAmudim quoted in?Pri Megadim Siman 124:11, and in Mishna Berura 124:27).

?

The congregation should support and assist the aforementioned ¡°Mashgiach¡±, and by doing so they will merit having their Tefilos answered.?(Sefer Birchas HaBayis Sha¡¯ar 42)

In the zechus of strengthening ourselves in this important area, may we be zoche to the speedy arrival of Mashiach!

Wicked and Good

The Divine Nature

Commenting on the words on the Rosh ha-Shana Hymn: "His garment is charity; His mantle is wrath; He is girded with vengeance; His hidden character is compassion," the Ropshitzer Rabbi said: "The author explains in these words the Divine nature. Only outwardly is our Lord clothed with wrath and girded with vengeance; but hidden within, He wears the garment of charity and compassion."

SEFER CHOFETZ CHAIM
?
Day 149 ¨C Rechilus and Loshon Hora

?
The conditions for a statement to be considered proper, constructive speech, rather than prohibited rechilus, are almost identical to those which permit communicating information that would otherwise be considered loshon hora (i.e. information that is derogatory or harmful). In fact, a study of the situations which permit rechilus l¡¯toeles (for a constructive purpose) will reveal that virtually every case involves loshon hora as well.
???????????
As discussed above, among the reasons which permit speaking rechilus for a constructive purpose are the prevention or termination of harm, or gaining restitution for harm caused by the subject. Such statements invariably incriminate the subject, and are therefore loshon hora. Thus, for rechilus to be spoken for a constructive purpose, all conditions which permit speaking loshon hora for a constructive purpose must be met as well.
???????????
Conversely, not all motives that justify negative speech qualify as a constructive purpose to permit speaking rechilus. While one may publicize the wrongdoings of an individual if social pressure could bring about a change in his behavior, one could not do so if the victim is as yet unaware of the individual¡¯s identity. The evils of causing animosity between the victim and villain outweigh the possibility that social pressure will yield concrete constructive results.
?

?
SEFER SHMIRAS HALOSHON

?
¡°When Your Enemy Falls ...¡¯¡¯
?
How careful must a Jew be not to rejoice over his fellow¡¯s downfall or disgrace! As Scripture states, ¡°When your enemy falls be not glad, and when he stumbles, let your heart not be joyous. Lest Hashem see it and it displease Him, and He will turn His wrath from him [to you]¡¯¡¯ (Mishlei 3:5). To rejoice over another¡¯s failures is to direct the Attribute of Judgment toward oneself in a powerful way. Moreover, this sin has the destructive power of idol worship. The Sages relate (Midrash Eichah 1:21) that at the time of the First Destruction the soul of the Patriarch Avraham entered the Temple ruins. ¡°What is My beloved doing in My house?¡¯¡¯ asked Hashem. Responded Avraham, ¡°Why have my descendants been cast into exile among the nations of the world?¡¯¡¯ Hashem answered, ¡°Because they worship idols and rejoice over each other¡¯s downfall.¡¯¡¯ Thus, Hashem equates these two sins.
?
One should forever reflect upon his own spiritual failings so that he will be reminded that he too is deserving of shame and scorn. It is the merits of his ancestors, coupled with other factors for which he can take no credit that Hashem, in His mercy, spares him from shame. With this outlook, one will truly empathize with those who experience failure and disappointment in their personal lives.

The last two Shabbatot of the year are critical.? In his weekly shiur, Rav Rosenblum quotes Rav Levinshtien zt¡±l, on the importance of being extra careful in Halacha these last two Shabbatot.? Chazal teaches that Shabbat is equivalent to the entire Torah, when one keeps Shabbat correctly; it is as though he kept the entire Torah.? Rav Fanger D'var Torah Parshat Nitzavim /Rosh Hashanah.

D'var Torah Parshat Nitzavim /Rosh Hashanah.
On Rosh Hashanah, it is customary to bring to the table simanim: An apple with honey - so that we have a good and sweet year, a pomegranate - to increase our merits like a pomegranate, etc. We also bring a fish head, and say "May we be like the head and not the tail."
A student sent a question to his rabbi revealing how bad his marriage relationship was. The climax came on Rosh Hashanah, he wrote, when his wife handed him not the fish head, the tail - and told him: "Everyone gets what they deserve ." The guy was broken, his whole Rosh Hashanah was destroyed and he does not know how to pick up the shattered pieces of his marriage.
What would you do in such a situation?
Between you and me, do we really care to eat the tail? What's the deeper meaning behind eating the head and saying "We will be like the head and not the tail"? One reason is that the head refers to a leader, and the tail is to be led. Each of us wants to be good, but sometimes we are drawn to nonsense - passions, temptations, bad qualities. We want to be in the lead - to lead ourselves where we want to go, not to be a "tail" - not to be led¡
A person who receives a tail on the night of Rosh Hashana, if he receives it with love, does not need the symbolism of a fish head, because he is already ahead!! He is already leading, he knows how to overcome his difficulties. In contrast, a person who receives the head, but from every little thing gets upset, from every temptation he breaks even if he eats a thousand heads he is still a tail - because he is being led.
The weekly Torah portion begins:?
?????? ????????? ??????? ????????? ??????? ?' ??????????, ?????????? ??????????? ?????????? ?????????????... ???????? ????????? ???????? ?????? ???????? ????????? ??????? ??????? ??? ?????? ????????Says the holy Zohar explains,?
?"?????? ????????? ???????" "you stand today" - today? Rosh Hashanah when we stand
?"??????? ?' ??????????" " before H'shem" with all aspects of our personality,
?"??????????"- "your heads" - the periods we are ahead,?
"???????????"? "your cheeks" - the periods we act like babies (sometimes the sign in the car "Caution" Baby in the car ", refers to the driver.
?"??????????," "your beards "- the periods when we feel old even if we are young.
In short, all aspects of ourselves.?
The idea is to uplift ourselves, especially on the last Shabbat of the year to be strong and realize that we all are, as well as life itself,? a little more complex than we thought. What is important is not to run away from ourselves or the difficulties life throws at us, yet to be grounded - "you stand", to be strong - to choose to lead and to believe in a better future and a good, sweet year, even if we and those around us stumble, remember to be a Rosh - i.e. " To do the will of our Father in heaven.?
Shabbat Shalom and a sweet New Year.
Rav Yitzchak Fanger
