I don¡¯t think there is good enough information to know for sure about flying¡ªeverything is anecdotal, and at best based on trying to be sensible about avoiding drops in blood flow/bp and oxygen. ? In addition, it is known that high altitude (eg. Himalayas) ?climbers get optic disc swelling and neuropathy, so the advice makes at least some sense; ?see for example:? ;? ? ? A modern jet has similar cabin pressure to an altitude of 8000 feet. However, it is known that oxygen saturation levels drop even in modern aircraft. See ? and go to the section on ¡°Significantly Altered Physiology during Airline Flights¡±. ? I personally have flown a number of times since I got NAION, including from the US East Coast to Hawaii overnight, even after I knew about the paper above, and I will be flying again. ?But I personally would not go hiking above 8,000 feet or so, out of caution. But other people will come to a different conclusion given the same (fundamentally unknown) risks. ? Some other things I have heard to be careful of with NAION are weightlifting and playing woodwind and some brass instruments: Both temporarily increase intraocular pressure, which my NO said to avoid especially in the 8 weeks or so after I got NAION (ie, no pushups, weightlifting, sit-ups, lifting more than 30 lbs). But again, this was just his professional opinion, and not based on any rigorous study. ? Adam ? ? ?

I believe it is the suction of the mask. My event just happened 4 weeks ago and vacation is a month away so maybe that¡¯s just for vacation.. ? I also had the bright flash of light with loud noises (one night even when my husband closed the magnetic cover on his iPad).? It had seemed to go away but recently has happened again. My event was in 2020.?

? Hi Lisa, I have flown a handful of times without incident but all my flights have been less than 5 hours.? In reviewing old posts, many?people fly many times a year without incident while a couple of people stated that their naion occurred after flying the day before.? So based on statistics it seems safe.? What I do is to avoid?red eye flights so that it doesn¡¯t interfere with my normal sleep schedule.? For the first six months I was advised to avoid high intensity sports, avoid lifting heavy objects, stay out of hot baths, saunas, and hot tubs, stay very hydrated, basically not do?anything that could mess with blood pressure.? One weird thing that I noticed in the first 18 months, and others have commented as well, is that a sharp or sudden noise will cause a bright flash in my naion eye. ? I don¡¯t snorkel or scuba dive so can¡¯t comment on that, maybe others can. Scott?
