New Mariner¡¯s Tropical Cyclone Guide
I am posting this for the users of Scott's weather software.? If you are a mariner or an amateur weather observer you will want to download a copy of it to keep and refer to.?
The National Hurricane Center Publishes the Mariner¡¯s Tropical Cyclone Guide.? This new guide replaces the old Mariner¡¯s Guide for Hurricane Awareness in the North
Atlantic Basin, which was published in 2000. The original guide was published in 2000, when National Hurricane Center (NHC) average track forecast errors were more than double today¡¯s average and the forecast only extended to 72 hours. Many important support products, including the forecast cone, wind speed probabilities, and 34-kt time of arrival graphics have been developed over the last two decades. Due to the advances in forecast skill and enhanced support products, some of the old recommendations - including the well-known ¡°1-2-3 Rule¡± - are no longer endorsed by NHC. This new guide reflects the significant improvements in tropical cyclone forecasting in the past 20 years and covers the updated best practices to avoid these storms. In addition to these updates, the new guide expands in scope to cover all tropical cyclone basins. Understanding that the maritime industry is a global enterprise, NHC partnered with the Central Pacific Hurricane Center and Joint Typhoon Warning Center to provide insights outside of NHC¡¯s area of responsibility, which covers the North Atlantic and eastern North Pacific Oceans. This guide was written by Dylan Flynn, a full-time Meteorologist at NHC and part-time Ship Routing Officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve. The guide was reviewed by leading experts in tropical meteorology and the maritime industry, including the U.S. Navy and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, where it will be used as part of their advanced meteorology curriculum. The Mariner¡¯s Tropical Cyclone Guide is an essential resource for mariners navigating tropical cyclone basins around the world. It is available for free from the NHC website at the following link: ?

Hi Mike, Thanks for your e-mail.? The only purpose of bearing and distance is to know the direction of the station you are trying to work. Need Help
I haven't used ACL for about a year to log POTA activations. Note: I don't have the latest version.? That said, I have many dozen activations successfully logged.. but, I'm sure I've messed up the process by not correctly logging my most recent activations.? BTW, I'm generally an Mac user.. but bought this PC just for N3FJP.? I didn't want to post to Scott as they are busy peeps.
I'm hoping someone will take my under their wing.. possibly via Zoom or? a phone conversation. Here is what the current issues are: 1.? I've "lost" logs.. as mentioned, due to forgetting how to save before converting to ADIF.? Saving probably wasn't necessary.. but I wanted to save the files to Desktop using "save as"? ? ? ?I think that was wrong.? Very old age issues. 2.? My last attempt to log failed and I can't even shut down ACL. ? ? ?I keep getting a popup "Unable to Retrieve Data"? I couldn't retrieve requested data in GetDataset.. etc"? ?giving me an unrecognized database format. ? ? ?'C:\Users\chipz\OneDrive\Desktop\K=8665 Sprague Lake.mdb' followed by the same without the quotes. As it stands, even with ACL closed, as long as the laptop is open I continually get repeated popup.. as above.. I hit ESC.. but they keep coming until the desktop is covered with them. Saying OK or clicking "x" has no effect. I can provide more info as to my attempts to locate 'missing' files.. but, I fear they are gone. Anyone? Thanks, Bill WA7WS |

Re: This has bitten me several times...
I don't know what other things you may be using your log for, but the name etc. is not needed for POTA purposes and takes a tiny bit of computer time to process. I would simply turn off the lookup feature so nothing is auto filled. If I was frequently working pileups and time is important to me, I would remove all unneeded fields and only use what was required for my particular program/contest. That eliminates the noise and time for those fields.

If I have the callsign incorrect initially and hit tab, and the callsign resolves to an actual real callsign (but incorrect), ACLog fills-in the pertinent information. After receiving and entering the correct callsign and hitting tab, the name associated with the incorrect callsign and other info is left in the name field, forever to be used for future contacts with that call until it is noticed by me at some point. I've learned to clear the name field and other fields when I have to make a correction so that they are filled with the correct information, but this is just a hassle, and I don't have a lot of time during pile-ups to make these extra tabs and deletes during an activation. I know I'm not the only one this happens to. Is there a workaround for this? Am I doing something wrong? Thanks, 73, Jim, dit dit |
