Re: Patch Requests: Grids, Frequencies, Searching, and Formatting

Wow, my comments seem to have stirred a lot of responses. I think that my comments may not have been as clear as I thought and were misunderstood. I will try to simplify.

?

The grid:

?

The essence of the request is this: update the world map to reflect the grid I enter in the (grid) field.

Just yesterday I had an op from New Jersey activating a park in Hawaii. At no point am I suggesting that Scott magically figure out where the operator is, nor am I suggesting the operator update his grid on QRZ every time they are in a different spot. I simply said that the world map shows the location entered in QRZ, which may not be the actual location of the operator.

?

I therefore asked Scott, ¡°Would you?patch your system to update the World Map to reflect the location updated in the grid field?¡± That is, updated by me.

?

As a plus, IF Scott could, I asked ¡°In addition, as a stretch, updating the county would be a bonus.¡±

?

So, to clarify, I asked Scott to update the map based on MY entry in the grid field, and if possible, identify the county. Obviously, the county is not the request itself, but an add-on, a bonus, and not the ¡°meat¡± of the request.

?

Consider: Scott gets the grid location of the operator from QRZ because that is the option I chose in the software. Therefore, he feeds a function with that grid, which in turn updates the map. All I ask is to feed that function again with the grid I enter in the grid field.

?

The frequency:

?

Let¡¯s face it, there are not that many ways one would write down a frequency. Brian mentioned a few formatting options, so choices for the user. The length of time one uses the program should not be a criterion to either accept or dismiss a suggestion. Further, my request asked to format how the frequency is displayed to the user, not how the data is stored. Additionally, there are really only three practical permutations in displaying a frequency, either by megahertz, kilohertz, or hertz.

?

I agree with Brian Warner, WB0NWZ, and his suggestions of formatting options. However, I disagree it will produce spaghetti code. I don¡¯t think that Scott has written his suite of programs in procedural, line numbered, BASIC.

?

I noticed no one mentioned anything about searches.

?

I sincerely hope this clears up the intent of the requests.
