AC Log 5.0! New Versions of ALL Contest Programs, CW Encouragement, Antenna Updates and More!
Hi Gang,
It's been full throttle here at N3FJP headquarters! I have lots of updates and information to share, so please sit back, relax, grab a cup of coffee and read on! This e-mail covers: Amateur Contact Log 5.0 is Now Available! New Versions of All Contesting Software are Now Available! CW Encouragement for the CW Challenged (including me)! Side by Side Comparison of a Ground Mounted Vertical to a Dipole. QRZ Image and Bio Look Up Tutorial Amateur Contact Log 5.0 is now available! AC Log 5.0 enhancements include: - Band map DX spotting zoom scale and rig tracking features added (detailed with tutorial here: ). - QRZ Callbook image and biographical display on call tab (requires QRZ subscription, but I think it is well worth it!). You'll find a tutorial below. - LoTW identification of DX spots (Click LoTW and then the command button that says "ID LoTW Users on DX Spots" to enable). - Ability to save current rig settings from Rig Interface form (will be in the contesting software in future releases too). - Ability to adjust CW character spacing for PC generated CW (please use generously for us CW challenged folks!). :) - Frequency privileges display form remembers last license class selected on next display (will be in the contesting software in future releases too). - Ability to disable Watch List form display on Call tab (click File > Watch List to adjust your Watch List alert settings). - Ability to disable list matches on Country field tab for user's country, to speed tabbing through the Country field (click Settings > List Matches for These Fields with Tab to enable). When you upgrade, please be sure to follow these upgrade steps for AC Log: As always, upgrades are free to registered users. Of course, this includes our N3FJP Software Package users! New Versions of All Contesting Software are Now Available! New versions for every contesting program (now totaling more than 80) are on the website! These first three upgrades are new to all the software: - Band map DX spotting zoom scale and rig tracking features added. - Spot last button to easily post DX spots on main form (to the right of the Clear button). - Ability to adjust CW character spacing for PC generated CW (please use generously for us CW challenged folks!). :) These enhancements were already in the last release of the major contesting programs. They are now in all the contesting software, including all the state QSO party programs! - Addition of Super Check Partial, which can either be displayed in the Possible Duplicates window, or on a separate floating form. - Dynamic scale resizing on band map form reflecting range of actual posted DX spots for a given band. - Option to display band map automatically on start up. - Resize the main form and the individual controls will reposition after you complete your mouse move. - Your customized main form dimensions are saved on exit. - Press Ctrl F to display a small form to quickly change your rig's frequency, band and mode. This form can optionally be set to display on start up from the rig interface form. - Pressing Ctrl W displays the CW setup form as always, but now, you can also press Ctrl > Shift W to display a tiny version of the form showing your F key strings. This form can optionally be set to display on start up from the CW setup form. - Press Ctrl > Shift C to display the bearing as a compass point as you type the call. - Additional DX spotting filtering option to block calls that would be identified as duplicates (Was this ever useful during Sweepstakes and CQ WW!). CW Encouragement for the CW Challenged (including me)! Even if you aren't feeling the love for CW right now, or you think your copy speed is too slow, I really encourage you to give CW contesting a try. Believe it or not, you don't have to copy at 30 WPM to enjoy CW contesting, or work guys at that speed! No matter where you start, I guarantee that by the end of the weekend, your CW proficiency will have improved! My friend Dave, N3HCN and I decided to work the CQ WW CW contest last weekend as a multi operator, two transmitter station, running 100 watts and mostly wire antennas (). After operating for a few hours Friday evening, most of the day Saturday and then just me solo, sporadically on Sunday, we wound up with 943 Qs and 110 unique DX entities! But here's the thing. Dave is a great CW operator, while I can barely copy at speeds in the high teens, but during the time we were both operating, our individual QSO totals and run rates were nearly identical! For contests like CQ WW and others, where the exchange is basic, with DX spotting, as you click and pounce, all the information is right in front of you. All you have to do is to make sure the call was spotted correctly (many aren't so be sure) and be able to recognize your call when it comes back. Even if your CW speed is really slow, when you have the characters you expect to hear right in front of you, you not only can copy them, but you are increasing your speed and upgrading your CW skill in the process! But don't just take my word for it. I received several e-mails expressing similar sentiments this week and I'd like to share portions of two of them with you: Larry, W1DYJ Writes... Thanks for adding the Band Map with its very recent enhancements. Without them, I would have been lost. Let me explain: I decided six months ago to get back into CW, a mode I had not used since my novice days 52 years ago! I set a goal of entering the contest this past weekend. I’m a reasonably proficient phone contester, but I have never been in a CW contest. My code copying skills are now around 10 WPM, so I knew the contest would be a challenge at best. I arrived at my “little pistol” QTH in mid-coast Maine late Thursday after Thanksgiving dinner. The recent snowstorm had taken out power Wednesday night so out came the generator. It finally came back at 9 PM Eastern Friday. Unfortunately this meant I didn’t fire up your logger until around 10 PM. With this late start, I spent most of the time just listening to get my mind around the rhythm of the exchanges and learning how to use the Band Map and the CW “F-Keys.” This is the first time I’ve listened to CW at 30-35 WPM, so it was a bit intimidating! I finally took the plunge Saturday morning around 9 AM. It took a long time for each Q as I listened far more than I hit “F4.” But slowly I figured out the rhythm of a CW contest. Although a small score of only 31K, it was a blast and I think I actually like CW contesting better than phone! Once I zero beat my rig, everyone pretty much sounded the same – not like phone contests where I often have a difficult time understanding the many “ESL” hams. AND CLICKING ON THE BAND MAP TO S&P WAS WONDERFUL!!! Your SW made operating FUN and easy. - Larry, W1DYJ Charlie, WA3PFA writes.. A couple of things struck me about the contest. First, CW is alive and well. Big Time. I'm glad for that. Second, I've never been involved in contests. Last time I was involved in a contest was 1974, and I wasn't really paying attention. Working this contest this weekend has changed my whole perception of propagation. I always thought propagation was a narrow and intermittent phenomenon. Plus, I always thought 40 meter DX was only for people with big fancy antennas and lots of patience. This weekend I only operated an hour or two now and then, but 40, 20, 15 and 10 meters were jam packed with DX signals the whole two days! I could plop down on 20 or 40, make a contact with one country, tune a few KHz, make a contact with another country, tune a few KHz, contact another country. Unreal! And then there's the spotting where you can zero in on multipliers. But my goodness, I contacted 20 countries on 40 meters in two days without really working hard, and many more on 20 and 15. So my new perception of propagation is that propagation is "in" far more often than I had thought, especially on 40. It's just that when I'm on the air, people overseas are asleep. And it's very exciting when you call a station in a rare country or zone, and hear your callsign coming back from a remote speck on the big, wide world. My wife is not a particularly technical person, but she's amazed by the whole thing - communicating with people in all these different countries in a short period of time from our little ham radio station in the basement. And thirdly, I am struck by the good manners. Oh, sure, you have the rare station that tunes up in the blind, or sends a stream of dits while tuning across the band, but no more so than we had in 1974. But what I'm struck by is the patience of an operator who is calling CQ, maybe there's a small pile-up, he hears me but doesn't have solid copy on me, and will try over and over to get my callsign right. I experienced that many times during the contest and I thought, how sportsman like. Those operators could easily have moved on to another caller after the second try. And when a station calling CQ responds to one station in the pileup, 99% of the other stations remain silent to let the QSO complete. There are people from all over the world, all walks of life in that pileup, but they all agree to back off and let each QSO complete before calling again. -Charlie, WA3FPA Enjoy CW gang! Learn CW now if you haven't already and jump into CW contesting! There's tons of fun to be had and you will be very glad that you did! Side by Side Comparison of a Ground Mounted Vertical to a Dipole. I'm really happy with my wire antenna farm, but I've always wondered about how well ground mounted verticals perform, so I decided to do a side by side comparison, with and without ground radials, to my dipoles and loops. If you decide to install a ground mounted vertical, or you have one already, you definitely want a LOT of ground radials! All the details are here: QRZ Image and Bio Look Up Tutorial I am really excited about this new QRZ image and bio look up feature. It requires a QRZ XML subscription, but in my opinion, it is well worth it! What a thrill to see the image of anyone you are working, who has uploaded their image to QRZ! Some of the images, particularly scenes from some DX locations are breathtaking! Implementing this new feature in AC Log 5.0 is easy. To display QRZ images or navigate to the QRZ bio information when you tab from the Call field: - Be sure your QRZ XML subscription is in good standing (QRZ only returns the name after expiration). - Be sure your PC is connected to the Internet and that your Internet protection software is allowing AC Log access to the Internet. - From AC Log's menu options click Callbook > QRZ Internet Lookup. - Check the check box that says Open Image & Bio on Call tab. When you tab from the Call field, if the user has an image on QRZ, you will see a form like this appear with the person's image and an option to navigate to the bio page: Otherwise, with the feature enabled, AC Log will navigate to the users QRZ bio page. Band Map Enhancements in CQ WW 4.6 Now Available!
Hi All,
Additional Band Map Enhancements are Now Available in CQ WW 4.6!
I've enhanced the band map even more by adding the following features:
- Ability to zoom in on any section of the map as close as you like!
- Ability to set the map to to follow your rig's current frequency (with rig interface enabled)!
- Ability to see your rig's location on the map by a red dot (with rig interface enabled)!
To zoom in on a section of the band map, first click on the title bar or blue area of the form to give it focus. ?Then, put your mouse over the area of the map you want to zoom in on. ?Turn your mouse wheel forward (or use the ?+ and - keyboard buttons). ?Move your mouse to a new location to update the target of the zoom. ?After scrolling, you can click on the Zoom label to enter a specific frequency range. ?To clear the zoom, scroll out, Right click the Zoom label or press Esc while the Band Map form has focus.
With rig interface enabled, to have the band map follow along with your rig's current frequency, click the title bar of the band map to give it focus. ?Then press F. ?The band segment will default to 50 KHz, but you can place your mouse over the red dot that indicates your rig's frequency and scroll your mouse wheel to narrow or enlarge the segment display. ?Alternatively, click on the Zoom label and enter two frequencies, which will define the range that will update as you change frequency on your rig. ?Tune your rig and the band map will follow right along!
Here is an example of the Zoom feature. ?Displaying the whole 10 Meter band, here is are what appear to be a few spots in a portion of the phone segment. ?The red dot on the right is my 756 Pro II's current frequency and many of the spots are overlapping.:
After clicking on a blue area of the form and placing my mouse over the center of the overlapping spots, I turn my mouse wheel forward to zoom in and reveal many more spots to choose from!
You can also click on the blue area and drag your mouse to update the zoom range. ?Remember, whether Autoscale is checked or not, you will not see any spots outside of the zoom range while you are in zoom mode. ?To clear the zoom, Right click on the Zoom?label?or press Esc while the Band Map form has focus.
I have just finished coding this feature. ?With CQ WW starting this weekend, I've added it to that program first. ?Lord willing, I plan to have the zoom enhancement in all the programs in the next few weeks (with ARRL 160 and ARRL 10 Meter Contest Logs at the top of the list).
As always, upgrades are free to registered users. ?You'll find the latest version of the CQ WW Contest Log with the new band map zoom enhancement for this weekend's contest here:

Enjoy!

Two Corrections, SCP Update, Click & Pounce and More!
Hi All,
I have several miscellaneous announcement to share...
Two AC Log Corrections for 4.9.
I've made two minor corrections to AC Log 4.9 regarding eQSL comments upload formatting and conditions under which you can edit your fields displayed.
If you are an eQSL user and downloaded AC Log in the first few days of release, you may notice that your eQSL comments upload with additional characters surrounding the spaces of the comment you typed on the eQSL upload form. ?
Also, clicking Settings > Edit Fields Displayed requires AC Log to be at 100% form size, or your customized settings will not save properly. ?AC Log checked for the 100% value before allowing the customization to proceed, but did not check if the user had 100% set, but then customized the height or width manually by dragging the edges with his mouse.?
I've updated AC Log 4.9 to correct the eQSL comments upload and check for customized form sizing before allowing customization. ?If either of these items are important to you, simply uninstall AC Log 4.9 from Windows Control Panel and then reinstall 4.9, following the upgrade steps here: ?http://www.n3fjp.com/upgradestepsaclog.html
Super Check Partial Update
I've received lots of additional kind words on the new Super Check Partial feature following November Sweepstakes and questions from folks eager to find out when it will be in the rest of the contesting software. ?Super Check Partial is already in all the major ARRL, CQ, NCJ, etc. contesting programs that are on the website now! ?I still have to add it to the state QSO party programs, which will take a few more weeks, but I'm working hard on it and Lord willing, it won't be too long. ?Thanks so much for all your kind words on the new feature!
Watching Friends / Club Members Contest Progress in Real Time
Contesting is even more fun when you can see how your friends and club members are doing in real time! ?It's also quite motivating as the competitive juices get flowing! ?
Using the new Web Status Uploader feature that is now in all of my software, including AC Log, several folks in our local group and I are doing just that! ?We've set up a page on our local club site with links to each of our individual uploads for real time access. ? Each individual has two links. ?One for their AC Log and one for the current contest upload. ?To see how we set it up for our local club and our November Sweepstakes results, please click here: ?http://www.nemarc.org/memberlogs.html
E-mail Delivery
Kimberly and I have recently encountered a problem being able to e-mail folks who have yahoo.com addresses, and possibly others. ?Apparently because we e-mail so frequently, Yahoo has either been placing our e-mail in folks spam folders or bouncing it back to us without delivering it at all. ?You may receive this announcement e-mail because yahoogroups uses a different sending address, but if you have a yahoo.com address, or any other address from which you are not receiving direct replies from snkdavis@..., please contact your Internet Service Provider and let them know they are blocking e-mail that you want to receive from snkdavis@.... ?The?receiving?party has to make the request as ISPs won't respond to the sender's request.
Kimberly and I respond to all e-mail?within?24 hours. ?Believe me, it is just as frustrating for us to take the time to write a reply, only to see it bounce, or?receive?a follow up e-mail from our users, thinking we are ignoring them, wondering why we haven't?answered their questions, when we already have.
Click and Pounce
November Sweepstakes SSB was a great opportunity to take advantage of the new band map, the ability to scale the main form to fit the band map to the right and the ability to filter DX spots to exclude contest duplicates! ?Running 100 watts and mostly wire antennas (http://www.n3fjp.com/antennas/), my friend Dave, N3HCN and I wound up with the sweep and 610 Qs in the log. ?We ran frequencies when we could, but we spent a lot of time in search and pounce mode. ?
After a while, searching and pouncing can become a bit fatiguing, tuning from one QSO to the next, figuring out who is running the frequency, only to discover he is already in the log. ?So, instead of searching and pouncing, we started?clicking?and pouncing!??We laid out the band map as in the screen shot below and set the SS software to filter out contest duplicates. ?Then, one band at a time, we clicked from one spot to the next, working our way down the band, until we worked all the current spots on the band. ?Then it was off to the next band. ?We managed to keep our run rate near 40 Qs per hour (and sometimes more) using this method. ?Most of all, it is much less fatiguing, since you know who's frequency it is, the call is already entered when you click on the spot and that the call isn't a duplicate. ?Run a frequency when you can, since your run rate will be much higher, but the click and pounce method is a great alternative when you can't!
Two things to be careful of with Click and Pounce. ?First, a significant percentage of DX spots have the call wrong in the posted spot. ?Make sure you hear the call for yourself and correct when needed. ?Second, not all calling stations are spotted, so don't give up while you are waiting for new spots to appear. ?Keep tuning!
And in response to the questions we always receive when we neglect to include the following in our e-mail announcements... ? ?

AC Log 4.9, Contest Super Check Partial Update & Great Fun With Low Profile Antennas!
Hi All,
Amateur Contact Log 4.9 is Now Available!
I think you will really enjoy the additional display flexibility and other new features built into AC Log 4.9! ?Most of the AC Log 4.9 upgrades are?primarily the result of the contesting enhancements I've been working on.
It started during CQ WW SSB, when I wanted the spots on the band map to be more spread out and reflect the range of actual spots instead of the whole band. ?To make the spots easier to see, I added an option on the band map form to rescale the display range automatically.
Of course, one thing leads to another. ?I wanted to be able to display the band map to the right of AC Log (or contesting program), but still have AC Log fill the screen from top to bottom. ?With AC Log 4.9, when the form is in a normal window state, now you can drag an edge and the individual controls will reposition after you complete the mouse move. When you close and restart AC Log, it will remember your customized dimensions. ?It is still best to start by choosing a form size close to the size you want AC Log to use by clicking Settings > Appearance > Form Size. ?Then customize it to your preference. ?The controls won't reposition if you maximize the form, so if you want AC Log to take the whole screen, click Settings > Appearance > Form Size and enter 100 as always.
Other AC Log 4.9 enhancements include:
- Option to display the band map automatically on start up (you can still display the band map at any time by pressing Ctrl E).
- Pressing Ctrl W displays the CW setup form as always, but now, you can also press Ctrl > Shift W to display a tiny version of the form showing your F key strings. This form can optionally be set to display on start up as well. ?You can click on the buttons to send CW directly from the mini form.
- Clicking on the dialogue label when it says "Watch List Spot:" will tune your rig to the spot frequency.
- Click Settings > Appearance > Display Bearing as Compass Point to show the compass point as you type the call.
- Click Settings > Appearance > Display Distance as Kilometers to display the distance in kilometers as you type the call.
- Additional DX Spotting filtering option to block spotted DX entities where you have the entity?confirmed on both the band and mode (CW or PH) of the DX spot.
- eQSL Nickname field added on eQSL download form for eQSL users with multiple accounts to be able to download from their desired account. (Some 4.8 users already have this feature).
- ?To change frequency quickly from the software, press Ctrl F. ?A form will display (and you can keep it up if you wish - it will float on top) that you can use to change bands, modes or enter a specific frequency. ?You can also set AC Log to show the frequency change form on startup from the rig interface form if you like.
As always, upgrades are free to registered users! ?If you'd like to enjoy these new features, please uninstall your current 4X version of AC Log from Windows Control Panel and then install 4.9 (3X users should not uninstall the 3X version until after you?have upgraded). ?You'll find the detailed upgrade steps here: ?http://www.n3fjp.com/upgradestepsaclog.html
And Amateur Contact Log 4.9 here:

Super Check Partial (and?other?enhancements) Implementation Update!
As I wrote before Sweepstakes CW, I am in the process of adding Super Check Partial to all the contesting software. ?Lots of folks tested out the new SCP implementation during Sweepstakes and all reports were very positive. ?I still have the state QSO party programs to update, which will take a few more weeks, but I've already completed the following enhancements for the rest of the contesting programs (and there is a new version for Sweepstakes with the rest of these enhancements too):?
- Addition of Super Check Partial, which can either be displayed in the Possible Duplicates window, or on a separate floating form.
- Pressing Ctrl?W?displays the?CW?setup form as always, but now, you can also press Ctrl > Shift?W?to display a tiny version of the form showing your?F?key strings. This form can optionally be set to display on start up from the?CW?setup form.
- Dynamic scale resizing on the band map form reflecting the range of actual posted DX spots for a given band.
- Option to display the band map automatically on start up.
- Press Ctrl > Shift C to display the bearing as a compass point as you type the call.
- Additional DX spotting filtering option to block calls that would be identified as duplicates.
Lke AC Log, all these upgrades are free to registered users! ?You'll find the detailed upgrade steps here:
http://www.n3fjp.com/upgradestepscontest.html
Great Fun with Low Profile Antennas!
There is no doubt that anyone with a beam antenna can DX circles around the 100 watts and low profile, neighborhood friendly wire antennas that comprise my peanut whistle station, so please don't read this as a boastful post. ?I just want to take a moment and really encourage anyone with a modest setup, or the need to erect low profile antennas, that you can have a blast and work a LOT of DX too!
My friend Dave, N3HCN came up and operated with me for both CQ WW SSB and Sweepstakes CW. ?We set a goal before CQ WW of working 100 unique DXCC entities by the end of the contest. ?After just 14 operating hours we had more than 500 contacts in the log and 100 unique?entities! ?During Sweepstakes CW, we worked every section but NT with 446 Qs. ?So, in the space of about 9 days, we worked WAS (in fact every section but one) and DXCC running only 100 watts, dipole inverted Vs, 6/10 of a wavelength above ground and wire loop antennas!
I want to encourage everyone that you can really enjoy contesting and DXing with 100 watts and a very modest antenna set up, so I've started a section on the website that?details?the antennas we are using here:
http://www.n3fjp.com/antennas/index.html?
If you aren't satisfied with your station's performance, please take a look at some of these super easy antenna options. ?If you have actual experience with other antenna designs that meet the criteria detailed on the page above and would like to share, please let me know!

November Sweepstakes Contest Log 5.5 Now Available with Super Check Partial!
Hi All,
Just in time for this weekend's ARRL November Sweepstakes CW Contest....
November Sweepstakes Contest Log 5.5 is Now Available!
I have been receiving requests to add a Super Check Partial feature to my software, so I've worked up an implementation for the November Sweepstakes contest log. ?If you are unfamiliar with Super Check Partial, the idea is that as you start to type a call, all the similar calls of active contesters are displayed, which can help you to determine the call you are trying to work. ?You'll find lots more details on Super Check Partial here: ?http://www.supercheckpartial.com/
If you'd like to try the new Super Check Partial feature, from 5.5's menu options click Settings > Super Check Partial and check the check box to enable the feature. ?You can either display the data in the Possible Duplicates control, or on a separate, floating form that you can drag and resize?wherever?you like!
I am planning to add Super Check Partial to the rest of my software, but that will be a big job, so I'd really like to receive your feedback on this implementation first. ?Please give it a try and let me know how it works out for you!
For those of you who always write and encourage me to keep my software easy to use as new?features?are added, don't worry, my software looks, displays and functions exactly as it always has by default. ?You don't have to enable Super Check Partial if you don't want to. ?
As always, upgrades are free to registered users! ?Just uninstall the existing November Sweepstakes program following these steps:
http://www.n3fjp.com/upgradestepscontest.html
And then install the latest here:
http://www.n3fjp.com/novsweeps.html
Enjoy November Sweepstakes, the good band conditions and good luck on getting the clean sweep!
A Suggested Screen Layout for Multiple Forms
There are many ways to set up your display and this is just one option. ?For those of you who are enjoying the new Band Map features released in the last upgrades of all my software and now the new Super Check Partial feature, both with floating forms, here is an easy way to lay out your screen:
- ?From the menu options of the November Sweepstakes software, click Settings > Appearance > Form Size and enter 90.
- ?Close and restart the November Sweepstakes software.
- ?With DX Spotting enabled, press Ctrl E to display the Band Map
- ?Mouse over the band map, click the Vertical / Horizontal button so that it is vertical and then move the Band Map to the top, far right.
- ?Click Settings > Super Check Partial, enable the feature and select the floating form option.
- ?When the Super Check Partial form displays, drag the form and edges to resize it to fit the bottom of your screen.
Here is a screen shot:
Red on the Super Check Partial window indicates possible duplicates. ?As more characters are typed in the Call field, the Super Check Partial list becomes more manageable.
In addition, with a form size less than 100, you can now drag the edges of the main form and the controls will reposition accordingly, ?This approach will not affect the font size, so choose a form size close to what you want to begin with. ?If you need to start over for any reason, enter a value of 100 for the form size to clear your manually changed height and width.
Again, for those of you who find this display too busy, want to keep things simple and just want to see the main form, that's fine! ?The single, main form will display by default, just as it always has. ?The rest is optional for you to enjoy if you ever decide you want to!
And in response to the questions we always receive when we neglect to include the following in our e-mail announcements... ? ?

Centennial QSO Party Watch List Update!
Hi All,
toggle quoted message
Show quoted text
Just a quick note to let you know that thanks to many of you sending your Centennial QSO Party data, the current Amateur Contact Log Centennial QSO Party Watch List file now contains 3,738 unique entries with point values greater than one! ?A copy of the latest is attached. ?This is by no means all the higher point value calls, but it should at least cover a significant chunk of the more active ones. ?
You can also download the latest file here:
http://www.n3fjp.com/watchlist.html
I suspect the Watch List will continue to grow since I'm still receiving more Centennial QSO Party log data. ?Rather than creating too much e-mail regarding the updates, if you want to keep up with the latest, please visit this page often:
http://www.n3fjp.com/watchlist.html
Unless anything significant develops, I'm not planning to send any more e-mail on this topic, but I will update the file on the website at least once per day (assuming I receive additional data), so check back there for the latest!
Enjoy the Centennial QSO Party!

[Attachment(s) from Scott & Kimberly Davis included below]
Hi All,
Centennial QSO Party - You Likely Have More Points Than You Think!
If you've been on the air at all this year, whether contesting, general rag chew or chasing W1AW around the country, you likely already have more Centennial QSO Party points than you realize! ?Between some casual operating here, Field Day and a few other contests, I was surprised to discover I have more than 6,000 points. ?That's not high compared to many folks, but I already qualify for some wallpaper and it's quite possible that you do too! ?I've included the instructions for finding your current point total on ARRL's website below. ?You'll find details on the Centennial QSO Party here:
Here are the wallpaper point value?levels:
Centennial QSO Party Watch List!
With just 2.5 months to go in the Centennial QSO Party, we are getting down to the wire. ?On the Users Group e-mail list, we've just started cobbling together?a master Watch List file to use with Amateur Contact Log that will help us find needed points. ?This data is gleaned from our individual, on line logs. ?The Watch List file will display the call sign and point values as stations are spotted, or when you type a call in the Call field and then tab. ?All call signs with a point value of 2 or higher that we have worked so far are included in the Watch List, but don't forget, anyone who is an ARRL member is worth 1 point, so even when you work someone not in the Watch List, there is still a good chance you are earning at least
one point with many of your QSOs!.
A copy of the latest WatchList.txt file is attached. ?The record count of unique entries now stands at 1,878. ?This file contains the call signs whose point values are 2 or higher that have been logged by those sending their data to me.
If you would like to?e-mail me your Centennial log to help us beef up our data, please do! ?There are undoubtedly MANY more calls to include! ?Instructions for that are below!
To use the attached watch list, please do the following:
1. ?If you have data in your existing Watch List you want to keep, you must first either rename or move the existing WatchList.txt file. ?Otherwise, you will lose your existing Watch List data!
2. ?From AC Log's menu options click File > Show File Locations and note the location of your settings files (not shared).
3. ?Close AC Log.
4. ?Save the attached WatchList.txt file to the location you noted.
5. ?Start AC Log.
That will do the trick!
Instructions for Finding Your Current Centennial QSO Party Points and Sending Me Your Data!
Finding your current Centennial QSO Party point total and retrieving your log data just takes a few easy steps (and you'll want to do most of them anyway to see what your current score is):
1. ?Please navigate here:
?
2. ?Enter your LoTW User Name and Password at the top right: ?
3. ?Click Score Details > Centennial Points Challenge Details
4. ?Left click in the upper right Date field. ?Holding down the left mouse button, drag it all the way to the lower right field of the very last record. ?The list will scroll as you drag.
5. ?With all the list items highlighted, Right click over the highlighted area and then click Copy.
6. ?Address an e-mail to me direct (snkdavis@...), click Edit > Paste and send it along.?
That's all there it to it. ?I'll take care of the rest from here!

Hi Gang,
It just came to light that version 3.1 of the out of state, PA QSO Party contest log is set up for the state exchange, not section as it should be. ?This only affects out of state users where your ARRL section abbreviation is different than your state abbreviation. ?PA users are not affected at all.

- ?Download and install version 3.2: ?http://www.n3fjp.com/stateqsoparty.html

SPAR Winter Field Day Contest Log 1.0 is Now Available!
Hi All,
I'm especially excited to announce that:
SPAR Winter Field Day Contest Log 1.0 is Now Available!
This contest has all the excitement and fun of ARRL's June event! ?The SPAR folks have tweaked the exchange for this year's contest by adding ARRL sections and dropping RST, so the exchange is now very similar to ARRL Field Day, plus current temperature. ?This will be?a great opportunity to get?together?with ham friends or operate solo, enjoy the contest and get some practice in for the summer contest too! ?
Show off Amateur Radio, see how many sections you can work, compete for a high score or just enjoy making some casual contacts. ?Just like ARRL Field Day, there's lots of ways to have fun with this contest!
Don't worry, you don't have to set up outside in the cold if you don't want to. ?The brave souls who go outdoors get bonus points, but you can operate from home on commercial power and work everyone if you like. ?You can earn bonus points if you operate on emergency power or away from home, including public locations too!
Circle your calendars for this contest! ?It is a 24 hour event, starting at?1700 UTC (12:00 noon EST) Saturday, January 24 2015. ?Station set up may begin no earlier than 1300 UTC (8:00 AM EST) on January 24, 2015. ?This is the weekend between the NFL conference championships and the Superbowl, so there's no football to miss.
You'll find the complete rules here:
www.spar-hams.org/contests/winterfd/index.php?pg=2
As always, additional programs I add to the N3FJP Software Package are free to Package users. ?Just e-mail Kimberly and me and we will send you a password for this new program!
You'll find the SPAR Winter Field Day Contest Log here:

PA QSO Party 3.2 In State
Hi All,
Just a quick note to let you know I updated the PA QSO Party software to also accept PA. ?The PA QSO Party scoring counts ARRL sections, not states, so 3.0 - 3.1 were coded to accept EPA and WPA, but I've updated the software to also accept PA as well. ?No changes were needed for the out of state version.
As always, upgrades are free to registered users. ?You'll find 3.2 here:
http://www.n3fjp.com/stateqsoparty.html
And the upgrade steps here:
http://www.n3fjp.com/upgradestepscontest.html

One of the most often requested additional programs I receive is support for the SPAR Winter Field Day contest. ?The SPAR Winter Field Day folks have modified the rules for this year's event, so that the exchange is now very similar to ARRL Field Day, making the format much more?familiar?to what we are all accustomed to when we think of Field Day. ?The only additional field for the winter event is temperature. ?I'm working with the SPAR folks to?develop the?software, we are making great progress and the program should be ready very soon!
You'll find all the rules and information on the SPAR Winter Field Day here (Don't worry, there is a bonus for braving the cold, but you can operate indoors from home for this contest if you like):

Amateur Contact Log 4.8 & New Contest Software Versions Now Available!
Hi All,
?
Amateur Contact Log 4.8?and?new versions of all my contesting software are now available!
?
Amateur Contact Log 4.8 includes the following enhancements:
?
- Ability to set DX spots filtering.
- Ability to display a DX spots band map (press Ctrl E from the main form to display). - Printing of multiple QSL strips on one label. ?
Note that many of the other enhancements listed in the contesting software below were already added in AC Log 4.7 and Field Day Contest Log 4.3.
?
Amateur Contact log 4.8 has actually already been on the website a little over a week.? This is the first opportunity I've had to send out the announcement because of other scheduling commitments.
?
?
Contesting software upgrades include:
?
- Ability to set DX spots filtering.
- Ability to display a DX spots band map (press Ctrl E from the main form to display). - Ability to set have the program speak the details of a DX spot. - Contest status web page FTP uploader (Detailed here:? ) - Ability to list recent QSOs filtered by the same band and mode. - Additional error checking to let you know if you have the clients set to TCP but forgot to also set the server to TCP. - Ability to see the QSO rate time statistics of your specific PC (from the settings menu). - Clients networking in TCP can now make local backups. - Backups for both File Share and TCP are now in ADIF.? - CW Buffer Form (Ctrl K). ?
?
As always, upgrades are free to registered users.? Of course, this includes our N3FJP Software Package users!
?
When you upgrade, please be sure to follow these upgrade steps?for AC Log:?
?
And these steps?for the contesting software:? ?
?
The current version numbers of all the contesting software are listed here:?
?
?
DX Spots Filtering Details
?
As the popularity of DX Spotting continues to grow, depending on the Telnet host you select, you may be seeing lots of DX?spots posted for stations?that may not have propagation to your corner of the world.? With the latest versions of my software, you can now filter DX spots by the location of the station that posted the spot.? The idea is that if you filter DX spots to only spots that have been posted by receiving stations closer to you, you will have a better chance of hearing the spotted station at your location.
?
Options for DX spot filtering include:
?
Only display DX spotted by stations in:
?
- Your Continent
- Your Country
- One or more specific call area(s)
?
Additional filter options include:
?
- Only display CW spots
- Only display SSB spots
- Only display spots in the US General class portion of the band
- Select?band(s) you wish to block
?
To set these new filters, from the DX Spotting form, click the More filtering button.
?
Of course, there is lots more filtering you can set directly at the Telnet host.? You'll find those Telnet host instruction details here:?
?
?
Band Map Details
?
While I was working in the DX Spotting code, this was the perfect opportunity to add a band map feature, similar to what I had created in the old VB6 versions of my software.? With DX Spotting enabled, simply press Ctrl E to display the DX spotting?band map for the band you are currently on.
?
The new band map is actually a separate form that you can display either horizontally or vertically above the main form.? Horizontally, it just displays the prefix of the station, but?you can mouse over the prefix for frequency and time details.? Vertically, it will display the entire call sign and specific frequency.? Clicking on the spot will tune your rig to the spot frequency, just like the list.? You can move the form to any location you like and resize it too!
?
To switch the Band Map form from horizontal to vertical,?mouse over the form and a Horz / Vert button will appear for 5 seconds.? Just click the button to switch from one orientation to the other.? Try?both orientations to see which you like best.
?
I have to confess, I added this feature more because of user requests than for my own interest, but now that I've been using it for a bit, I've really come to enjoy it myself, especially in the vertical orientation!
?

Amateur Contact Log 4.7 is Now Available!
Hi All,
?
Amateur Contact Log 4.7 is Now Available!
?
Enhancements in Amateur Contact Log 4.7 Include:
?
- Text to speech for Watch List and DX Spots (details below).
?
- CW Buffer Form (Ctrl K) (details below).
?
- Additional error checking to let you know if you have the clients set to TCP but forgot to also set the server to TCP.
?
- Pressing enter when a QSO in the Recent Contacts list has focus will bring up the edit screen for that QSO (in response to requests from blind hams).
?
-? Ability to upload your current log status and recent contacts to your hosting space (details below).
?
?
As always, upgrades are free to registered users. Of course, this includes our N3FJP Software Package users!??
?
You can download Amateur Contact Log 4.7 here:
?
?
?
By the way, if you are happy with AC Log 4.6 and don't see a need for these new features right now, staying with 4.6 is fine.
?
?
Text to Speech for Watch List and DX Spots
?
I've?started late, but recently I've been trying to work as many W1AW/X stations on as many bands and modes as possible.? As I've been programming other rewrites, I've had DX spotting running on AC Log with W1AW/0 to /9 in my Watch List.? The W1AW stations are spotted often and I found myself in constant distraction, switching from my coding software to AC Log every time I heard the Watch List ding, checking to see if W1AW was spotted on a band or mode that I still needed.?
?
To remedy that, now you can optionally configure AC Log to audibly?read the Call, Band and Mode?of the Watch List spot to you by clicking File > Watch List.? No more need to switch applications!? Similarly, you can configure text to speech for DX spotting by clicking Settings > DX Spotting? > Configure.? With DX spots, AC Log will read you the country name, band and mode of the needed spot.
?
?
CW Buffer Form
?
This was requested by users who wanted the ability to type keyboard CW on the fly, but not actually have it immediately send.? For example, you can start typing responses while the other station is turning it back to you.? To use this feature, press Ctrl K, type the text you want to send and press enter.
?
?
Web Status Uploader,
?
As I detailed in my Field Day announcement last week (), I added this FTP status upload feature with Field Day in mind, but when users heard that I was working on this feature for Field Day, I started getting requests to add it to all the programs, including AC Log!? Using this status upload feature, clubs can see what their club station running AC Log is doing from home, club members can track their club's progress of all supported contests, DXPeditions can post where they are operating, recent contacts, etc., and?you can upload?your activity as well!?
?
You can see an example of my Amateur Contact Log status here:?
?
Click Settings > Web Status Upload Settings to configure your settings.
?
?
Upgrade / Rewrite Progress
?
I had originally planned to complete all the existing rewrites before?implementing any upgrades such as this one?or adding additional programs.? One item Field Day 2014 brought to light that modified that plan was the importance of additional error checking for folks who had their clients set to TCP networking but forgot to also set their server to TCP networking.? Since I need to roll that through all the programs, you'll first be seeing new versions of all the existing software, that also include most of the enhancements listed above.? That said, the rewrite progress is going well and Lord willing, it is likely that I will have nearly all of the rewrites complete by years end!
?

Field Day Contest Log 4.3 Now Available & FD 2014 Report!
Hi All,
?
Field Day Contest Log 4.3 is Now Available!
?
Enhancements for this upgrade include:
?
-? Ability to purge D contacts if you are a D station.
?
-? Ability to list recent QSOs filtered by the?same band and mode.
?
-? Additional error checking to let you know if you have the clients set to TCP but forgot to also set the server to TCP.
?
-? Ability to see the QSO rate time statistics of this specific PC (from the settings menu).
?
-? Clients networking in TCP can now make local backups.
?
-? Backups for both File Share and TCP are now in ADIF.
?
-? Web status uploader.? Details follow:
?
Have you ever had to leave your Field Day site and wonder how your group was doing while you were away?? Maybe you'd like to listen along from home, but you can't find the frequency they are running?? Perhaps you are headed up to the site and are wondering if there is anything they need that you could bring along?? This feature is designed to answer those questions!
?
The concept is simple.? Every three minutes (or whatever interval you set), Field Day Contest Log 4.3 will FTP upload your current score statistics, a brief message and your most recent contacts (including frequency if known) to your web hosting site.? Simply give the URL to your group members so that they can check via the Internet.? This is an excellent way for club members to keep tabs on how it's going and any needs that may develop at your Field Day site while they are away.? You can see an example by navigating your browser to:
?
?
?
This isn't designed so much for public consumption, but rather a quick status update on the Internet for club members to be able to follow along from home.? The HTML coding is minimal, with an emphasis on keeping the ASCII file upload to be as small as possible.? The web page may be accessible on the Internet to anyone, but it is likely that only folks you provide the URL to will be able to find your data, so view this primarily as an internal communications tool for your group.
?
During the brainstorming process for this feature, some groups who don't have Internet at their Field Day site requested I also code a text file that could be transmitted by packet, so I have created that as well. Of course, you will have to configure your packet software to attach the file to a message and send it automatically every few minutes.? You'll find this new feature in the Settings menu.
?
When users heard that I was working on this feature for Field Day,?I started getting requests to add it to all the programs, including AC Log!? Using this status upload feature, clubs can see what their club station running AC Log?is?doing from home, club members can track their club's progress of all supported contests, DXPeditions can post where they are operating, recent contacts, etc., and individuals can upload their activity as well!? I will let you know as soon as this feature becomes available in AC Log and the rest of the software!

Field Day 2014 Report!
?
This?was the second year of use of my new C#.NET rewrite of my Field Day software and first year that the new TCP networking option was used.? You may recall that most everyone reported great results last year, but there were a few that struggled with intermittent network connectivity in 2013, so I added the TCP network option, that should work better with less robust networks.? You'll find?last year's summary?here: .
?
Following Field Day 2014, I've received lots of great reports on both File Share and TCP!? I did not receive a single report of consistent problems from anyone entering data using File Share, so it appears everyone did a great job setting up fast, reliable networks in 2014!
?
Lots of folks tried TCP this year with great results as well!? With properly configured TCP setups there were only two problem reports.? One group networked 10 PCs via TCP and found their server would occasionally lock up.? They switched to a faster PC for the server and everything worked fine.? Another group networked at least 16 PCs.? They also found the server to lock, so they switched to File Share.? TCP requires more of the server than File Share, so while using the fastest PC?for the server is important with either networking option, it is especially so for TCP.? Make sure you select your fastest PC, with plenty of processing power and RAM to perform that function.

The way Yahoo groups are set up, it is much easier for subscribers to unsubscribe from the old e-mail address than for the list owner to do it for you. In addition, Yahoo now prohibits list owners from adding anyone, so it is impossible for me to add your new e-mail address.??

Field Day - 3 Quick Thoughts for EVERYONE (Whether you plan to participate or not)!
Hi All,
?
As we make final preparations for Field Day weekend, I have three quick thoughts I'd like to share...
?
Whether you are a contester or not, please get on the air and make some Field Day contacts this weekend!
?
Less than 74 hours from now, Field Day 2014 will be finishing up.? Between now and then, groups all over the continent are making final preparations, getting equipment, generators, food, rigs and computers together, antennas airborne, coordinating operating schedules and all the little things that make Field Day go.? In many cases they will be on the air for many hours, striving to both show off the amazing hobby of Amateur Radio and turn in a competitive score.? It is a huge amount of fun and a heck of a lot of work!? Please help reward their great efforts by providing plenty of QSOs for their logs!
?
Even if you aren't a contester and you only have an hour to spare this weekend, please fire up your rig and give as many stations as you can a contact.? Every group you call will really appreciate your QSO and it will make their Field Day that much more enjoyable!??In addition, you might be able to pick up a few more states towards your Worked All States Award.? If you are ambitious, it is very possible that you can achieve the goal of working every state this weekend alone!
?
For folks new to Field Day, if you are on a single transmitter home station with commercial power, your exchange is simple.? You'll simply send your Call, your Class as 1D and your ARRL section.? Just be aware you can't call other 1D stations for contest points, but all the other station categories will love for you to give them a call!
?
If you are new to Field Day, you'll find the complete rules here:
?
?
?
And if you would like to find a local Field Day group, this locator will point the way:
?
?
?
Encouraging visitors can change a life (and even affect yours)!
?
When I was 13 years old, a family friend took my Dad and me to a local Field Day on a Saturday evening.? That was my first exposure to Amateur Radio.? I didn't understand the significance at the time, but the guys had an amazing run going as we arrived at their site.? Still, they took the time to explain what was going on, the exchange and they were completely willing to abandon their run to encourage this shy, 13 year old to take over the mic.? Anyone who has ever been at the bottom of a pile up, running a frequency, knows the thrill.? They said I was a natural and I was hooked!
?
Had it not been for?the positive, encouraging spirit of that great group, willing to forego an awesome run for the sake of possibly encouraging a kid, I'd very likely never have become an Amateur Radio operator.? I wouldn't be doing what I'm doing today and there would never have been N3FJP Software for you to use.? Those couple hours changed my life and hopefully, though my software, has brought some added enjoyment to yours too!?
?
If you see a visitor with a hint of intrigue in their eye, please offer them that same gracious encouragement that was given to me.? It's very possible that you will be helping to shape a destiny and we will all be better for it!
?
?
Help for setting up Field Day networking.
?
If you are planning on networking?the Field Day software this weekend, hopefully you've already gotten your PCs / network equipment together before now and have that configured to go.? If you haven't,?do it this evening!? You don't want to be troubleshooting Saturday morning with the clock ticking!
?
For those of you that still have that task ahead, these links will help get you going:

How to correct SQL Command errors:
?
?
If you are running multiple stations but aren't networking, here is how to combine your log data after the contest:

?
?
Have Fun!
?
I am planning to run 1E (home station emergency power) from here at the house.? Kimberly and I hope to work you this weekend!
?
Above all, be safe, have fun and enjoy the Field Day experience this weekend!? There is nothing else like it!

Multipe New Rewrites and Field Day Reminders!
Hi All,
?
I have completed the upgraded rewrites for a number of additional programs!? The latest versions include:
?
ARRL International DX Contest Log (DX Version) 2.0.
?
Stew Perry Contest Log 2.0
?
Maryland State QSO Party Contest Log?3.0
?
Pennsylvania State QSO Party Contest Log?3.0
?
West Virginia State QSO Party Contest Log?3.0
?
?
These are the latest completed programs in my series of rewrites, converting all my software from VB6 to C#.NET. They have all the enhancements that you've come to enjoy in the new rewrites.?
?
You'll find the new programs on their respective pages here:
?
?
?
As always, upgrades are free to registered users. Of course, this includes our N3FJP Software Package users!
?
?
Reminder for Field Day Preparations!
?
This will be the second Field Day that the new, C#.NET version of my Field Day software will be in use.? If you didn't upgrade to 4.0 last year, remember, for?networking, everyone at your Field Day site must use either the old VB6 version (2.7) or the new C#.NET version (4.2).? You can't mix the two versions and share a common data file.
?
If you are planning on networking, you can learn from the experiences folks reported last year here:
?
?
?
And all the details on setting up the Field Day software for networking, including the new, TCP networking option?are here:?
?
?
?
For those of you planning to?install the software?at your Field Day site,?please keep in mind that even if you are installing from a CD, you may still need an Internet connection if you haven't ever previously installed a .NET program on that PC before.? If the PC you are installing on doesn't have the .NET 4.0 Client?framework installed, the installer will automatically download it from Microsoft's website.? If you've been keeping up with Windows updates, you likely already have it, but you don't want to wait until Field Day morning, at a remote location away from the Internet, to try to install from?your CD?and discover you need an Internet connection to complete the installation!?
?
Speaking of waiting until Field Day morning to install the software, or?to attempt?to set up a network from scratch, please don't!? Take a little time well before the contest, get your PCs together and your network up and running.? As always, problems easily solved in a relaxed atmosphere can seem insurmountable when the clock is ticking!?
