Field Day 2015 - 3 Quick Thoughts for EVERYONE (Whether you plan to participate or not)!

Hi All,

As we make final preparations for Field Day weekend, I have three quick thoughts I'd like to share...

Whether you are a contester or not, please get on the air and make some Field Day contacts this weekend!

Less than 56 hours from now, Field Day 2015 will be finishing up. Between now and then, groups all over the continent are making final preparations, getting equipment, generators, food, rigs and computers together, antennas airborne, coordinating operating schedules and all the little things that make Field Day go. In many cases they will be on the air for many hours, striving to both show off the amazing hobby of Amateur Radio and turn in a competitive score. It is a huge amount of fun and a heck of a lot of work! Please help reward their great efforts by providing plenty of QSOs for their logs!

Even if you aren't a contester and you only have an hour to spare this weekend from home, please fire up your rig and give as many stations as you can a contact. Every group you call will really appreciate your QSO and it will make their Field Day that much more enjoyable! In addition, you might be able to pick up a few more states towards your Worked All States Award. If you are ambitious, it is very possible that you can achieve the goal of working every state this weekend alone!

For folks new to Field Day, if you are on a single transmitter home station with commercial power, your exchange is simple. You'll simply send your Call, your Class as 1D and your ARRL section. Just be aware you can't call other 1D stations for contest points, but all the other station categories will love for you to give them a call!

If you are new to Field Day, you'll find the complete rules here:

http://www.arrl.org/field-day ?

This video will demonstrate the basics of logging a Field Day contact with my Field Day logging software:

You'll find the Field Day logging software here:

And if you would like to find a local Field Day group, this locator will point the way:

Encouraging visitors can change a life (and even affect yours)!

When I was 14 years old, a family friend took my Dad and me to a local Field Day on a Saturday evening. That was my first exposure to Amateur Radio. I didn't understand the significance at the time, but the guys had an amazing run going as we arrived at their site. Still, they took the time to explain what was going on, the exchange and they were completely willing to abandon their run to encourage this shy, 14 year old to take over the mic. I got started, the run resumed and so much was happening I forgot all about being nervous. ?Before I knew it I was having a blast! ?Anyone who has ever been at the bottom of a pile up, running a frequency, knows the thrill. They kindly said I was a natural and I was hooked!

Had it not been for the positive, encouraging spirit of that great group, willing to forego an awesome run for the sake of possibly encouraging a kid, I'd very likely never have become an Amateur Radio operator. I wouldn't be doing what I'm doing today and there would never have been N3FJP Software for you to use. Those couple hours changed my life and hopefully, through my software, has brought some added enjoyment to yours too!

If you see a visitor with a hint of intrigue in their eye, please offer them that same gracious encouragement that was given to me. It's very possible that you will be helping to shape a destiny and we will all be better for it!

Help for Setting up Field Day Networking.

If you are planning on networking the Field Day software this weekend, hopefully you've already gotten your PCs / network equipment together before now and have that configured to go. If you haven't, do it this evening! You don't want to be troubleshooting Saturday morning with the clock ticking!

For those of you that still have that task ahead, these links will help get you going:

Have Fun!

Kimberly, a couple ham friends and I are planning to run 2E (home station emergency power) from here at the house. We hope to work you this weekend!

Above all, be safe, have fun and enjoy the Field Day experience this weekend! There is nothing else like it!

I have several announcements to share...

ARRL School Club Roundup Contest Log 1.2 is Now Available!

The School Club Roundup folks are implementing rule changes for October's SCR event including:

- CW will be counted as a separate mode from digital.

In addition to upgrading the software for these rule changes, I've also added an optional Name field. Please be sure to upgrade to 1.2 before October's SCR so you don't leave any student's CQs unanswered!

The ARRL School Club Roundup software is absolutely free for everyone! Please enjoy it (individuals can operate SCR too) and share it anyone who may be interested. You'll find the software here:

And if you have an interest in working with your local school to get students in your community involved in Ootober's SCR, I really encourage you to pursue it. There is no doubt it will be fun and rewarding for you and everyone involved!

One unusual scoring rule for this contest is that the total score is points X multipliers per band, added together, not total multipliers X total points.

Enjoy the new software and have fun in the contest! ?Hopefully you will catch some new African DX entities!

Announcing the Annual Worked All States / Counties QSO Party!

Hi All,

If you've been following along, you know that after the conclusion of ARRL's super Centennial QSO Point Challenge, my friend Dave, N3HCN, son Chris, KB3KCN and I were lamenting its conclusion and wishing it was an annual event. ?Just for fun, we started brainstorming what an annual contest would look like if we could develop our own. ?I mentioned the possibility in some previous e-mail, we received a lot of enthusiastic support, a brainstorming group formed, suggestions ensued and to make a long story short, our Annual Worked All States / Counties QSO Party is now up and running!

I want to extend a huge amount of thanks to my son Chris, KB3KCN, who solely created all the web site infrastructure. ?This is a much bigger job than you likely imagine! ?This event would not be happening without Chris' skills, time and very hard work.

You'll find the rules on my web site under the Additional heading. ?This link will take you directly to the rules ?http://www.n3fjp.com/wascntyqsoparty.html and I've pasted them below for your convenience.

Enjoy the?Annual Worked All States / Counties QSO Party!

Worked All States / Counties QSO Party

How to play in the Annual Worked All States / Counties QSO Party:

The Annual Worked All States / Counties QSO Party is a fun, year long operating event that facilitates reaching your Worked All States (WAS) goals, county hunter objectives and DXCC achievements.?Every new station you work on each band and mode is worth a point and each new county and DXCC entity is a multiplier. Just upload your log in ADIF??often! The web site will process your score for you and display your real time current standings.

Great ways to play in this contest are to participate in other contests throughout the year including the DX contests, state QSO party contests and any other contest or activity that puts Qs in your log. Contacts you make in those contests count for this one too!

When you aren't working contests or making rag chew QSOs, call?"CQ Counties"?("CQ CNTY"?on CW and digital) and work as many folks as you can!

In short, work as many stations as possible, seek out county and DXCC multipliers and??often. That's all there is to it!

Here are all the details, with additional thoughts and future possibilities below.

Worked All States / Counties QSO Party Rules

Objective:

Create a?fun?operating event that will be engaging and encourage on air activity on multiple bands and modes for a long duration (12 months). This event will facilitate reaching personal, multi band Worked All States (WAS) goals, county hunter objectives and DXCC achievements.

Rules:

-?Contest Period:?This is a 12 month, annual contest, January 1, 00:00:00 UTC through December 31, 23:59:59 UTC. Everyone starts fresh January 1st each year.

-?Bands:?Any Amateur Radio band except 12, 17, 30 and 60 Meters.

-?Modes:?CW, PH and DIG. PH includes any voice mode such as SSB, AM, FM, etc. DIG includes any digital mode such as RTTY, PSK31, etc.

-?Choosing an Operating Frequency:?In addition to FCC rules and regulations, please always be mindful of the??and be careful to choose a frequency that will not interfere with other QSOs and operating nets.

-?Making Contacts:?Call?"CQ Counties"?on phone and?CQ CNTY?on CW / Digital, similar to the ARRL Centennial QSO Party. All QSOs, including QSOs made during other contests, as well as casual operating, can be counted for points and multiplier credit.

-?Exchange:?Exchange of state and county is encouraged, but not required. The county and state do not actually have to be exchanged during the QSO, but must be included in your upload for multiplier credit. It's fine to use another data source to determine the state and county after the contact and add it to your QSO record before uploading.

-?Score:?QSOs are one point each. Multiply the number of unique counties and DX entities worked on each band and mode (CW, PH and DIG) times the number of QSOs. Your score will be calculated for you when you upload your log and we encourage you to do that often. Please see Reporting / Score Tracking for more details.

-?Multipliers:?3,077 counties and 340 DX entities are counted for multiplier credit on each band and mode. For example, assuming you work Harford County MD on 5 different bands on CW, SSB and Digital, Harford County MD will be counted as a multiplier 15 times (5 CW, 5 PH and 5 Digital).

-?Duplicates:?The same station may be worked once on each band and mode for QSO points and multiplier credit (if applicable). There is no penalty for working the same station on the same band and mode again, but no additional points or multipliers will be earned. Exception - if the station worked is a rover and has activated a different county, the contact is eligible for QSO points and multiplier credit.

-?Country List:?Country multipliers are the 340 DXCC entities?. The DX??must be included in your ADIF file (most logging programs include the country code number in their ADIF export).

-?County List:?Counties and their spellings must match?. Missing or misspelled counties will not be counted for multiplier credit.

-?Categories:

Power: High (1,500 watts or less), Low (150 watts or less) and QRP (5 watts or less).

Operator: Single, Multi

Rover: A rover is any station, mobile or stationary, operating outside of their home county. There isn't a separate rover category, but rover operation is fine. Rovers may activate any county and apply QSOs made while rover to their yearly total. Rovers who work the same station on the same band and mode from a different county do not receive additional QSO points as defined by the duplicate rule.

Reporting / Score Tracking:

Please??in ADIF format?often?throughout the year! Track your current score and leader board rank on line?!

Please include your entire year's data with each upload, as your previous data is replaced. When you upload your log, any duplicates and ineligible bands are removed, so simply uploading your entire general log for the contest period is fine. Your final log file submission must be uploaded before January 7th, 23:59:59 UTC of the following year.

Achievement Levels:

First Level:
10,000 points (Could be achieved with 100 QSOs with 100 unique multipliers)

Second Level:
150,000 points (Could be achieved with 500 QSOs with 300 unique multipliers)

Third Level:
500,000 points (Could be achieved with 1000 QSOs with 500 unique multipliers)

Fourth Level:
2,000,000 points (Could be achieved with 2000 QSOs with 1000 unique multipliers)

Top Level:
10,000,000 points (Could be achieved with 5000 QSOs with 2000 unique multipliers)

These QSO and unique multiplier values are just examples. Points can be earned with any QSO / multiplier combination.

More Details and Back Story:

With the success of the 2014 ARRL Centennial QSO party fresh in our minds, my son Chris, KB3KCN, good friend Dave, N3HCN and I started brainstorming. We thought it would be great fun to develop an annual, year long, Worked All States / Counties QSO Party, with a similar flavor to the ARRL Centennial!

With lots of great input from other interested folks, we developed a??to facilitate reaching personal, multi band Worked All States (WAS) goals, county hunter objectives and DXCC achievements. By making all counties multipliers, virtually all stations will be sought after when calling?"CQ counties"?on the air, encouraging lots of fun activity!

Simultaneously, in early January, 2015, ARRL President Kay Craigie reflected on the??and included these thoughts:

President Craigie said some have asked what the ARRL will do next. She said that while the League doesn't want to wear out the exuberance and goodwill the Centennial events engendered, "it's clear that operating challenges outside of the traditional menu of contests and awards have a great appeal."?She expressed the hope that, in the months and years ahead, all hams will seek out other operating challenges sponsored by all sorts of ham radio groups and keep the bands alive with signals.

We'd like to think this contest fits in beautifully with President Craigie's hopes!

Future Suggestions:

This Worked All States / Counties QSO Party is now up and running as we originally envisioned. Meanwhile, we've received lots of additional suggestions to our??including:

- Schedule an emphasis on specific states each week, similar to the Centennial. The schedule for each state may be close to the time of that state's QSO party weekend. Coordinators in that state would encourage activation of as many counties as possible.

- Create a web site of specific calls signs in counties to look for and when.

- Issue plaques, certificates to leaders in each state, overall, etc.

- Issue awards to stations who have the largest number of states with a "clean sweep". You earn a "clean sweep" for a state when you have worked all the counties in that state.

Current Status and Future Possibilities:

We have to reign in some expectations for now, while opening the door to these and other possibilities. This project is something Chris, Dave and I are working on in our "spare" time. I'm not planning to write a program for this project. AC Log (or any program that exports in ADIF) will work fine, as it did for the Centennial.

With the volume of work I already have creating, supporting and maintaining N3FJP Software, my involvement in this QSO party is very enthusiastic, but limited to helping craft the rules and working with Chris to create the web site infrastructure for log scoring. Answering contest support e-mail, organizing on air scheduling, coordinating plaques, etc., simply isn't something we have the resources to do here.

We've created the rules, built the basic web infrastructure and set it on automatic pilot, so we are are up and running! If we remain at this level, that's fine, we will have a lot of fun! Go make contacts,??and see your current score!

That said, it's clearly possible this can become much more! I couldn't be more pleased if an experienced organization or contesting group would like to take the lead on this contest and take it to the next level. If your group would like to support this event and make some the of these other suggestions happen, please e-mail me!

Thanks for your interest in the Worked All States / Counties QSO party!

Rookie RU 1.0 & JOTA 1.0 Now Available, SCR FD Challenge, WFD Submittal & More!

Hi All,

An excellent way to keep our QSO rates up and hobby vibrant is to introduce and encourage young and new folks to Amateur Radio. What's more, the time we spend will likely pay dividends far beyond radio in these young people's lives. Much of the recent coding effort at N3FJP headquarters has been in support of these sentiments.

The announcements in this e-mail include:

- ARRL Rookie Roundup Contest Log 1.0 Now Available (free)!

- Jamboree On The Air Log 1.0 Now Available (free)!

- Field Day Planning: A School Club Roundup Challenge!

- ARRL Kid's Day Log 2.0 Now Available (free)!

- Winter Field Day Log Submittal E-mail Address

ARRL Rookie Roundup Contest Log 1.0 is Now Available!

This new program, designed for use by both new hams and veterans, has all the features you've come to expect in N3FJP Software including dupe checking, sections changing color when worked, scoring, DX spotting, rig interface, super check partial, sending CW, etc. Best of all, you'll likely find it very easy and intuitive to use! Please encourage the new folks at your club and community to give contesting a try and work them on the air during the event!

Whether you are an N3FJP Software package subscriber or not, Rookie Roundup Contest Log 1.0 is free to everyone. I've developed this program to help encourage new folks to pursue the great hobby of Amateur Radio. All I ask is that you help spread the word and enjoy the software!

You'll find Rookie Roundup Contest Log here:

Jamboree On The Air Log 1.0 is Now Available!

I've also developed free software to support the scout's Jamboree On The Air (JOTA) event as well. I've never operated JOTA and since JOTA doesn't have a defined exchange, I sought input from users. The varied suggestions more than stretched the limits of what one of my contesting templates could be morphed into, but I did my best. This program might not meet everyone's JOTA style, but feedback so far has been positive. Please give it a try and if you find it useful, enjoy it!

You'll find Jamboree On The Air Log 1.0 here:

Field Day Planning: A School Club Roundup Challenge!

If you haven't been paying attention to the School Club Roundup (SCR), held twice a hear, you should! It may not be evident by the name, but the SCR rules are designed to encourage participation, not only from schools (worth 5 multipliers), but non school clubs (2 multipliers) and individuals (everyone is worth a point) as well! It means a lot to these kids to have an active radio experience during the contest and every QSO you and your club provide makes it that much better!

The text covering all the great reasons for you to operate during SCR here would be too long, but what I'd like to challenge you to consider is, as you plan your Field Day event, also spend some time planning how your club can partner with your local school to bring the School Club Roundup opportunity to more students.

Many schools don't have anyone involved with radio on their faculty, so they never have the opportunity to be exposed to Amateur Radio. We demonstrate every year we can set up quickly and operate entirely on our own resources. Not that you'd have to bring your own power, but there is no doubt that setting up a station for a few hours during SCR week as an in school or after school activity is well within out ability and very worthwhile!

Think about what you club can do, whether it be a one day set up on 20 meters, a week long event or maybe even an ongoing after school activity and then meet with your school's principal to discuss it. You won't earn extra Field Day bonus points, but the rewards for everyone involved will be far greater!

If you have questions about SCR and to learn more, the SCR folks have an e-mail group here:

I have free software for SCR as well:

ARRL Kid's Day Log 2.0 is Now Available!

I've supported Kid's Day for quite s while, but I've just rewritten the software in C#.net, so it now has the appearance, features and functionality of the rest of my new rewrites. Kid's Day Log is still free, and you'll find it here:

Winter Field Day Log E-mail Submittal Address.

The SPAR folks have a new e-mail address for your to submit your Cabrillo Winter Field Day Logs. Please be sure to address your e-mail and send your log here: winterfd@...

Clubs & Individuals, Please Join School Club Roundup Too!

Hi Gang,

As many of you know, the ARRL School Club Roundup Contest is running this week. ?The greatest emphasis is to work schools (they are worth 5 multipliers each), but non school?clubs are worth two multipliers each as well?and everyone,?including?individuals, is worth a QSO point! ??

So far, I've only run across two, non school club stations participating and I understand only a handful of clubs submitted scores for the last SCR contest. ?This is a great opportunity for your club to join in, support a great event and likely see your club place well in the scoring too! ?Since clubs are worth two multipliers each, they are especially sought after! ?Clubs, the kids would love to have your multipliers in their log!

Even if you are in the individual category (not associated with a school or a club), by all means please participate, work stations and call CQ School Club Roundup too! ?Each state is a multiplier and your state may be a new one for them! ?In addition to multipliers, contacts with individuals are worth a point as well!

Perhaps the best reason of all for you to participate has nothing to do with scoring. ?While some young operators are perfectly happy running a frequency (and doing a great job too), many kids are are a bit more tentative. ?They feel more comfortable searching and pouncing. ?Your getting on the air and calling CQ School Club Roundup will give them an opportunity for another Q in their log and another good experience with Amateur Radio!

So far this week, I've found activity tends to pick up around lunchtime and continues into the evening. ?If you are working during the day, you can still likely make a few Qs if you get on right after work.

There are lots of great reasons to jump into the School Club Roundup. ?Please join in!

You'll find my free School Club Roundup contest software here:

http://www.n3fjp.com/schoolclubru.html

And all the contest rules here:

Enjoy (and?encourage)!

School Club Roundup Contest Log 1.1 is Now Available!

Hi All,

School Club Roundup Contest Log 1.1 is Now Available!

Version 1.1 corrects a rig interface problem where the software wan't properly tracking the rig's current band in 1.0. ?In addition, after releasing 1.0, users requested additional multiplier detail, so I've included that in this upgrade as well. ?Just click View > Multiplier Score Summary to see those details.

You'll find School Club Roundup Contest Log here (just be sure to uninstall 1.0 from Windows Control Panel first):

http://www.n3fjp.com/schoolclubru.html

I've also been asked if there is a way that students in your school can see on the Internet in "real time" how your station is doing and check on the status of other stations. ?You bet! ?Just click Settings > Web Contest Upload Status and follow the directions on the form that appears. ?Your IT students will likely enjoy setting up this feature too!

With the upload status feature enabled, your entire school and / or community can follow along in real time and view your current score, recent contacts, etc. ?You can also follow along with the progress of any other school as well! ?Of course, this applies to clubs and individuals too! ?You'll find an example generated by my Field Day software here: ?http://www.n3fjp.com/fd/fdstatus.html

Winter Field Day?Email?Address Problem.

Winter Field Day was a great event, but folks, including me, have been unable to e-mail their logs to the SPAR folks for contest submission. ?Many individuals have written me direct for assistance, but I am not affiliated with SPAR and find myself in the same situation. ?

So far, all of my?attempts?to contact SPAR have gone unanswered and there is no new information on their web site or forum. ?They were extremely responsive and enthusiastic during the development process and the contest was a good success, so I'm at a loss. ?If anything comes to light, I will let you know.

NA Sprint SSB Contest Log 1.0 is Now Available & Kudos!

Hi All,

NA Sprint SSB Contest Log 1.0 is Now Available!

Just in time for tomorrow's contest, NA Sprint SSB Contest Log 1.0 is now available! ?As I detailed on?Wednesday, NCJ has dropped support for the SSB version of NA Sprint and a new group has taken over its support. ?The new group made significant, last minute rule changes?that only firmed up on Wednesday, requiring me to write an entirely new program to support?their?SSB version of the contest. ?You'll find complete details on the new contest here: ?http://ssbsprint.com/

As always, additional programs I add to the N3FJP Software package are always free to package subscribers. ?In addition, this program is also free to those that have previously?registered?my existing NA Sprint software. ?Just use the same password for either the?new NA Sprint SSB?version?or the existing CW / RTTY version. ?You can download the software here:

http://www.n3fjp.com/nasprint.html

Kudos to Contest Supporters / Developers & Encouragement for More!

I'd like to commend the NA SSB Sprint group for their efforts and encourage everyone, (individuals and clubs) to brainstorm and implement fun, engaging Amateur Radio operating events. ?If you've tuned in on a contest weekend or payed attention to the success of last year's 365 day ARRL Centennial QSO party, you know that an engaging, well crafted set of challenges is tremendous fun and a big part of what makes Amateur Radio thrive.

A few of us here are working on a year long, State / County QSO Party contest (http://www.n3fjp.com/wascntyqsoparty.html), but there are many other possibilities too! ?In an upcoming club meeting, schedule some time to brainstorm some Amateur Radio challenges with your group and craft some rules around your ideas. ?It could be a few hour sprint, a weekend contest or a year long event. ?It could be something that only your club membership pursues or it could become even more popular than the Centennial QSO Party! ?Imagine the possibilities and make it happen!

NA Sprint Log 3.7 Now Available! ?However...

This requires a bit of explanation. ?The National Contest Journal has ended its sponsorship of the North American Sprint. ?The following is from the January 8, 2015 ARRL Letter (http://www.arrl.org/arrlletter?issue=2015-01-08):

National Contest Journal (NCJ) has ended its sponsorship for the phone version of the North American Sprint. Going forward, the magazine will support Sprint events for CW and RTTY only. The magazine cited dwindling support for its decision.

"The September 2014 running of the phone North American Sprint attracted just 52 logs, and we estimate that approximately 3500 contacts took place," said NCJ Editor Pat Barkey, N9RV. He pointed out that the CW Sprint a weekend earlier attracted nearly 10 times that number of entries. Barkey said the lack of "a critical mass of participants" significantly changes the nature of the competition, where winning scores are built through recruiting and coaching new participants, "and the operating experience that makes the CW Sprint so special is essentially lost."

Meanwhile, another group is attempting to keep the SSB Sprint active, which is super. ?However, I'm having a difficult time remaining in the loop for what may be some very significant last minute rule changes that affect the functionality of my software for this weekend's contest. ?To make a long story short, I only became aware that the new group was adding Hawaii as a multiplier because another N3FJP Software user noticed the change on their website on Monday.?

I went ahead and added the Hawaii multiplier to the NA Sprint Log 3.7 (for SSB only, it is still not added when CW / RTTY are selected in conformance with those versions of the rules). ?I was about to announce version 3.7 when it came to light that the new group was considering additional rules changes Monday evening as well. ?

The additional rule changes they are contemplating add more section multipliers that can only be accommodated by creating a new, separate program for the SSB version of the event. ?Adding the additional sections to the existing software would break the program for the CW / RTTY versions of the contest. ?

I have not heard a word from the new sprint group since Monday evening. ?If / when they e-mail me with definitive direction, I'll do my best to accommodate?their?new rule set, even if that means?creating an additional program, should their rules diverge significantly enough to require it. ?That said, I'll need to hear definitively from the group that the new rule set is firmed up and that the proposed changes are documented and publicized. ?The effort here is significant, so I can't compound the time it will take by chasing a dynamically fluctuating rule set.

So, the bottom line is that NA Sprint version 3.7 has been updated to accommodate the new Sprint SSB rule set as documented on the new group's web site as of 1/26/15. ?You'll find version 3.7 here:

Joe, KJ8O and Dave, W0DR are running a new e-mail group to help you work needed states towards your multi band WAS awards! Any Amateur radio operator who would like to help complete the needed state contacts or who needs states is welcome to join WAS_USA! You'll find all the details here:

Update on Worked All States / Counties QSO Party.

Everyone, thanks so much for your enthusiasm, encouragement, thoughts and suggestions on the QSO Party we are brainstorming! Your excellent response leaves no doubt that there is great interest!

Several suggestions had clear consensus, strong support and we've modified the rules accordingly. The rules, detailed below, now include digital, eliminate the WARC bands (in addition to 60 meters) while adding the rest of the Amateur Radio bands.

A number of you suggested some really cool ideas including:

- Schedule an emphasis on specific states each week, similar to the Centennial. The schedule for each state may be close to the time of that state's QSO party weekend. Coordinators in that state would encourage activation of as many counties as possible.

- Create a web site of specific calls signs in counties to look for and when.

- Issue plaques, certificates to leaders in each state, overall, etc.

- Issue awards to stations who have the largest number of states with a "clean sweep". You earn a "clean sweep" for a state when you have worked all the counties in that state.

I have to reign in some expectations for now, while opening the door to these and other possibilities. This project is something my son Chris, KB3KCN, friend Dave, N3HCN and I are working on in our "spare" time. I'm not planning to write a program for this project. AC Log will work fine, as it did for the Centennial.

I first thought we would simply create rules, build the web infrastructure and leave it on automatic pilot. If that is in fact what happens, that's fine and we will have a lot of fun!

That said, it's clearly possible this can become much more! In case you missed it last week, ARRL President Kay Craigie reflected on the success of the Centennial QSO Party and included these thoughts (President Craigie's full message is here: ):

President Craigie said some have asked what the ARRL will do next. She said that while the League doesn't want to wear out the exuberance and goodwill the Centennial events engendered, "it's clear that operating challenges outside of the traditional menu of contests and awards have a great appeal." She expressed the hope that, in the months and years ahead, all hams will seek out other operating challenges sponsored by all sorts of ham radio groups and keep the bands alive with signals.

Together, we can help make that happen! This Worked All States / Counties QSO party came about solely because a group of us had a blast during the Centennial, we are missing the challenge / activity and are looking for an annual event to replace it. It's not tied to N3FJP Software and I couldn't be more pleased if an experienced organization or contesting group would like to take the lead on this idea and take it to the next level. Chris and I are having a lot of fun working on the scoring infrastructure, we are happy to continue with that part of the project as our schedules allow and if your group would like to support this event and make some the of these other suggestions happen, please e-mail me!

Here are the updated rules. These are getting close to being final:

Worked All States / Counties QSO Party

Draft (1/131/15):

Objective:

Create a fun operating event that will be engaging and encourage on air activity on multiple bands and modes for a long duration (12 months). This event will facilitate reaching personal, multi band Worked All States (WAS) goals and county hunter objectives.

Rules:

- Contest Period: This is a 12 month, annual contest, January 1 through December 31. Everyone starts fresh January 1st each year.

- Bands: Any Amateur Radio band except 12, 17, 30 and 60 Meters.

- Modes: CW, PH and DIG. PH includes any voice mode such as SSB, AM, FM, etc. DIG includes any digital mode such as RTTY, PSK31, etc.

- Choosing an Operating Frequency: In addition to FCC rules and regulations, please always be mindful of the Considerate Operator's Frequency Guide () and be careful to choose a frequency that will not interfere with other QSOs and operating nets.

- Making Contacts: Call "CQ Counties" on phone and CQ CNTY on CW / Digital, similar to the ARRL Centennial QSO Party. All QSOs, including QSOs made during other contests, as well as casual operating, can be counted for points and multiplier credit.

- Exchange: Exchange of state and county is encouraged, but not required. The county and state do not actually have to be exchanged during the QSO, but must be included in your upload for multiplier credit. Using another data source to determine the state and county after the contact and adding it to the QSO record is fine.

- Score: Multiply the number of unique counties and DXCC entities worked on each band and mode (CW, PH and DIG) times the number of QSOs (QSOs are one point each). Your score will be calculated for you when you upload your log and we encourage you to do that often. Please see Reporting / Score Tracking for more details.

- Multipliers: 3,077 counties and 340 DX entities are counted for multiplier credit on each band and mode. For example, assuming you work Harford County MD on 5 different bands on CW, SSB and Digital, Harford County MD will be counted as a multiplier 15 times (5 CW, 5 PH and 5 Digital).

- Duplicates: The same station may be worked once on each band and mode for QSO points and multiplier credit (if applicable). There is no penalty for working the same station on the same band and mode again, but no additional points or multipliers will be earned. Exception - if the station worked is a rover and has activated a different county, the contact is eligible for QSO points and multiplier credit.

- County List: Counties and their spellings must match this list: . Missing or misspelled counties will not be counted for multiplier credit.

- Categories:

Power: High (1,500 watts or less), Low (150 watts or less) and QRP (5 watts or less).

Band: Single Band, Single Mode, All Band, All Mode.

Rover: There isn't a separate rover category, but rover operation is fine. Rovers may activate any county and apply QSOs made while rover to their yearly total. Rovers who work the same station on the same band and mode from a different county do not receive additional QSO points as defined by the duplicate rule.

Reporting / Score Tracking:

Participants are encouraged to upload their ADIF logs often throughout the year to see their score and leader board rank on line in near real time. Your final log file must be uploaded before January 7th of the following year.

Thanks for your interest in the Worked All States / Counties QSO party!

Annual, 365 Day WAS / County QSO Party!?

Hi All,

With the success of the ARRL Centennial?QSO?party fresh in our minds,?my son Chris, KB3KCN, good friend?Dave, N3HCN and I have something of a brainstorm brewing. ?We?think it would be great fun to develop an annual, year long, Worked All States / Counties QSO Party, with a similar flavor to the ARRL Centennial! ?This event will facilitate reaching personal, multi band Worked All States (WAS) goals and county hunter objectives.

Everyone will start fresh each January 1, work different states / counties and DXCC entities for multipliers. ?Then multiply your total?multipliers?by the number of QSOs for a total score. ?

Participants will upload their ADIF logs to a web site that will display real time?scores and a leader board, similar to the Centennial.

Our initial ideas still need?refinement and it's not yet clear if we have the resources to put this together ourselves, but early indications are looking like this is a real possibility!

Below is an early draft of the rules. ?We are still in the beginning stages of this process and we'd love to hear any suggestions that you may have before we firm these up! ?You can e-mail me direct, or to stay more fully in the loop, you are welcome to join this e-mail group:

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/StateCountyQSOParty/info

Worked All States / Counties QSO Party

Early Draft (1/7/15):

Objective:

Create a fun operating event that will be engaging and encourage on air activity on multiple bands and modes for a long duration (12 months). ?This event will facilitate reaching personal, multi band Worked All States (WAS) goals and county hunter objectives.

Rules:

- ?Contest Period: ?This is a 12 month, annual contest,?January 1 through December 31. ?Everyone starts fresh January 1st each year.

- ?Bands: ?All HF bands 160 Meters - 10 Meters except 60 Meters.

- ?Exchange: ?Operators may call?CQ WAS, similar to the Centennial. ?All QSOs, including QSOs made during other contests, as well as casual operating,?can be counted for points and multiplier credit. ?Exchange of state and county is encouraged, but not required. ?The county and state do not actually have to be exchanged during the QSO, but must be included in your upload for multiplier credit. ?Using another data source to determine the state and county after the contact and adding it to the QSO record is fine.

- ?Score : ?Multiply the number of unique counties and DXCC entities worked on each HF band and mode (SSB & CW) times the number of QSOs (QSOs are one point each).

- ?Multipliers: ?3,077 counties and 340 DX entities are counted for multiplier credit on each band and mode. ?For example, assuming you work Harford County MD on all 9 bands (160, 80, 40, 30, 20, 17, 15, 12 10), on both CW and SSB on each band, Harford County MD would be counted as a multiplier 18 times (9 CW and 9 SSB). ?There are 3,077 counties and 340 DX entities that can be counted as multipliers on each band on both SSB and CW.

-?Categories (It is?questionable?whether?we want to break out categories. ?It might be better to keep it clean and simple like the Centennial. ?This is still in review):?

Power: High, Low and QRP.

Band: ?Single band, single mode, all band, all mode.

Rover: ?There will not be a separate rover category, but rover operation is fine. ?Rovers may activate?any county and apply QSOs?made while rover to their yearly total.

Score Tracking:

Assuming technical?challenges?are overcome, scoring will be handled?similarly?to the Centennial. ?Participants will upload their ADIF logs to see their score and leader board rank on line in near real time. ?An entire infrastructure will require development. ?Chris and I are working on that now. ?We have a ways to go, but so far so good.

Achievement Levels:

Still in review. ?Early thinking is as follows:

? First Level:

10,000 points ?(Could be achieved with?100?QSOs?with 100 unique multipliers)

? Second Level:

150,000 points ?(Could be achieved with?500?QSOs?with 300 unique multipliers)

? Third Level:

500,000 points ?(Could be achieved with?1000?QSOs?with 500 unique multipliers)

? Fourth Level:

2,000,000 points ?(Could be achieved with 2000?QSOs?with 1000 unique multipliers)

? Top Level:

10,000,000 points??(Could be achieved with 5000 QSOs with 2000 unique multipliers)

The QSO and unique multiplier values are just examples. ?Points can be earned with any?combination?of QSOs / multipliers.

So, that is the current state of our brainstorm. ?We are eager to hear your thoughts and suggestions!

Amateur Contact Log 5.2 is Now Available!

Hi All,

I have several more enhancements for you to enjoy in Amateur Contact Log 5.2!

Amateur Contact Log 5.2 is Now Available!

With the ARRL Centennial Points challenge and also while contesting, I find myself pressing Ctrl D to bring up the DX Spotting set up form to see the larger list of spots as needed. ?That list isn't organized or clickable though, so I decided to add another separate, floating form to display the DX spots in a more useful way. ?To display the floating DX spots form, just press Ctrl+Shift D. ?Just like the Band Map, you can click on the DX spots to tune your rig to the spot?frequency?and fill the pertinent fields in AC log!

While coding, I envisioned bringing this form up and closing it on the fly. ?During beta testing, some users decided to display this form instead of the main form's DX Spots window entirely in a more permanent configuration. ?If you would like to use the new form in that way, you can set the size of the dx spots window on the main form to 0% by?clicking?Settings?> DX Spotting > Configure. ?You can also set the form to display automatically on start up there as well. ?The new form will remember the size, location, column?widths?and order you set when you next display it.

Lord willing, I plan to add this new form to the contesting software in the next few weeks as well!

Other enhancements you'll find in Amateur Contact Log 5.2 include:

- Main form changes to DX spots column widths and order are now saved.
- QRZ image / bio display will hide command buttons after 5 seconds. Mouse over form to redisplay the buttons.
- Added Watch List delete all button (will be useful after the ARRL Centennial Points Challenge concludes).
- Ability to save and load CW settings for easy transfer to other N3FJP logging programs.
- Ability to save and load phone wave settings for easy transfer to other N3FJP logging programs.
- Removed Tech + from frequency privilege form.

As always, upgrades are free to registered users, including all N3FJP Software package subscribers! ?You'll find Amateur Contact Log 5.2 here:

CW Teacher 1.0, Band Map Tutorial, Winter Field Day - Test Your Network & Happy Holidays!

Hi All,

Here are a few more fun things to keep you occupied over the holidays!

CW Teacher 1.0 is Now Available!

Whether you want to learn Morse code from scratch, never having heard a dit in your life, or you just want to speed up your copy for CW contesting, CW Teacher will help!

I like CW, but I've never been particularly fast, so for most of my Amateur Radio life, I've gravitated towards SSB for contesting. More recently, I've come to realize that copying the short contest exchanges at 25 words per minute (WPM) and higher can actually be easier than a longer rag chew at 18 WPM. I've been spending more time with?CW contests and I've really come to enjoy them!

I had been thinking about creating a tool to help folks learn CW or increase their speed. Then, my son Brad, KB3MNE, mentioned an interest in learning CW. That was all the catalyst I needed to create this CW Teacher software!

This program will teach you Morse Code at your own pace. Set the sending rate at 18 WPM or higher so that you learn the characters at a functional speed, but don't worry, the software will send you each character, one at a time and wait for you to respond. There is zero rush. The entire emphasis of the software is teaching you to associate a sound with a letter. With just a bit of practice, that's really easy to do! ?Whether young or seasoned, this program should easily help most anyone learn CW!

Since copying CW with a keyboard is exactly what you will be doing when you are CW contesting, this software helps you become comfortable transferring what you hear to your keyboard directly as well.

The emphasis of this software is teaching Morse code from the absolute beginning, but I've also included options for more advanced practice, such as copying random call signs and Field Day style exchanges.

This program is completely free! Please enjoy it and share it with anyone you may know who would like to learn CW! ?You'll find it here:

Band Map Tutorial

The band map has really become a popular new feature in all my software. ?I've been receiving lots of questions on how to zoom in on spots in just portions of the band, how to set the band map to track your rig, how to set up your screen to display both the band map and contesting software (or AC Log), what the colors of the spots mean, what is auto scale, etc. ?You'll find all these and many more band map related questions answered here:

Test Your Network for Winter Field Day!

SPAR Winter Field Day is barely a month away and?I'm starting to?receive?the usual networking questions! ?If you are planning to set up a network with your group, it's time to get the PCs together, set up the network you plan to use and get everything configured. ?Even if your group is planning to operate from indoors, you still want to set up your network and PCs in advance and get everything configured. ?As always, problems easily solved in a relaxed atmosphere can seem insurmountable when the clock is ticking.

The SPAR Winter Field Day software networks identically to the ARRL Field Day software and you'll find all the configuration details here:

Amateur Contact Log 5.1 Now Available & YO3DMU's PstRotatorAz Program Update!

Hi All,

Amateur Contact Log 5.1 Now Available!

Amateur Contact Log 5.0 added a feature of displaying the primary image that QRZ users have uploaded to their QRZ web pages when tabbing from the call field. ?It came to light that QRZ provides several versions of their data feed and the source that AC Log 5.0 used wasn't consistently updated with the latest picture links. ?I've updated AC Log 5.1 to use the QRZ feed that delivers the most recent image data links. ?

Also, clicking a spotted DX call sign on the band map will now cause AC Log to tab, initiating the associated lookup and data retrieval functions.

The QRZ image update only applies to QRZ XML subscribers. ?If you aren't a QRZ XML subscriber and don't use the band map, staying with AC Log 5.0 is fine.

When you upgrade, please be sure to follow these upgrade steps for AC Log: http://www.n3fjp.com/upgradestepsaclog.html

As always, upgrades are free to registered users. Of course, this includes our N3FJP Software Package users!

YO3DMU's PstRotatorAz Program Update!

Codrut writes;

The latest PstRotatorAz program version is able, not only to take the callsign or locator information from AC Log and based on these to calculate the heading and rotate the antenna, but it is able now to take the frequency and tune a SteppIR or Ultrabeam antenna, or switch the antennas using for this various relays boards. To interface AC Log with PstRotatorAz select in PstRotatorAz "N3FJP's loggers" as Tracker, and set the "Tracking" mode.

I just tested it with the AC Log v5.1 and I found all these features working.
