Please Do NOT Download the Latest Country File for VB6 Versions of My Software

Hi All,
?
For those of you that are on Jim,?AD1C's e-mail list for his country update announcements, you know that Jim just issued a new country update yesterday.? The file he released for the new, C#?versions of my software is fine, however, Jim exceeded the array limits for the older, VB6 versions of my software.? I've contacted Jim so that he can upload a corrected file, but it may be a while before he can issue the correction.? In the mean time, if you have already downloaded Jim's latest file and are still running the VB6 versions of my software, you have two options:
?
-? Delete the most recent country file you downloaded?(assuming you downloaded to the shared folder, which is the default if you used AC Log's menu options).? This will cause AC Log to retrieve an older file in your Program Files directory.
?
C:\Users\YourWindowsUserName\Documents\N3FJP Software\Shared\arrlpre2.txt
?
Or
?
-? Go ahead and upgrade to the new beta version of AC Log, which can handle the larger file size:
?
?
Again, neither of the options above are necessary if you have not downloaded the file Jim issued yesterday or you are running the new, C# versions of my software.
?
I?apologize for the inconvenience.

Field Day Contest Log 4.1 Now Available!

Hi All,
?
?
Field Day Contest Log 4.1 is Now Available!
?
Field Day Contest Log Version 4.1 is the first?upgrade to the new, rewritten?C# version of my Field Day software that was used widely during the 2013 Field Day contest.? Version 4.1?adds?a TCP Networking option (explained in detail below), the ability to easily change operator?identification and access the network display from top level menu options.?
?
As always, upgrades are free to registered users.? You'll find version 4.1 here:
?
?
If you are upgrading from version 4.0, please first uninstall 4.0 from Windows Control Panel > Programs and Features or Add / Remove Programs (depending on OS).? It isn't necessary to uninstall any prior versions.

?
User Feedback on Field Day Contest Log 4.0 Following the 2013 Contest.
?
?
Since Field Day?Contest Log?4.0 is a complete rewrite with brand new code, some folks understandably stayed with the tried and true, VB6 versions this year.??Folks that stayed with the?older VB6 versions have been requesting feedback following the contest to help in their decision on which version to use next year, so?this seems like the right time to share the results.?
?
I'm happy to report that overall, the results were really good!? There were a few problem reports related to network connectivity?summarized farther down in this e-mail, but first the good news, which represents the feedback most groups sent along.? This is a very small sampling of?excerpts from the many kind words I received regarding Field Day Contest log 4.0, from those?who used it to network multiple PCs:
?
Scott,
As a long time user of your software, bravo on the FD Contest Log 4.0. It worked flawlessly for our 5A setup (we had one laptop play server all day, so there were actually 6 laptops connected via Ethernet to LAN only through a managed switch all while on emergency power for the whole event). No problems encountered. No hiccups. The network communication/chat window worked great.
Thanks for keeping the great software updated!

Hi Scott,
This year went great. Your field day program worked flawlessly and the station captains commented how well it worked. We had six computers networked together this year and thank you for making it so easy to set up a network. We went hard wire and not wireless as in the past the wireless net would fail at the wrong time.
Thanks again for all your hard work.

?
Hi Scott,
We just completed Field Day at WC8VOA with the new version of your FD logging software. We were networked with 3 PCs and one PC acting as the file server. Everything went well; we had no major problems.
----
?
Great Job Scott,
Ran three computers, two networked and one was vista (need I say more) no problems logged a little over 650 contacts with no major problems. We did delete two contacts with no loss of data and edited a couple too.? Thanks for the product and keep up the great work!!!

?
As the IT Captain for K8BF this year, I'd like to report that the new version of the software worked very well for us. We had one small hitch with some automatic backups not running, but you worked that out for us very quickly. Our setup included one PC for each station, plus one to act as a server to host the database and another with the keyboard and mouse disconnected and the software open so that casual observers could see the scores, all networked over wireless. No problems and no excitement all weekend, just the way IT likes it.

KD8WZS

?
Our group used your latest version for Field Day. We had six computers, wireless. One utilizing radio frequency control and two using software keying, one with a MicroKeyer, the other a homebrew interface.
All functioned brilliantly.
Thank you for the great software!

The Problem Reports.
?
?
Following Field Day 2013, I received lots of great reports from the vast majority of groups who networked with File Share using my new C# rewrite (Field Day Contest Log 4.0), but I did receive a few reports from a very small percentage of folks (only 7 groups, but that is 7 too many), who had intermittent problems with the program occasionally or frequently reporting 'unable to execute the SQL command'. It appears that these problems were related to intermittent network connectivity, power surges (one group specifically reported all was fine until they experienced a power surge) and / or RF interference.
?
Here is a sampling of these types of reports:
?
Scott,
I think that the wireless issues are network related (possibly the wireless systems being overloaded by all the RF flying around). Our Field Day effort used a combination of wired and wireless computers and after one problem with the wired network (loose power connection on one of the network switches) all systems were up 100% with no failures.
Ken WB2KWC

?
The Ford Amateur Radio League and the Livonia Amateur Radio Club operated Field Day this year as a 4A group.? We had a lot of fun, but we encountered multiple problems with your latest Field Day Program, N3FJP's ARRL Field Day Contest Log 4.0.? For the first time in using your programs for years, we received SQL errors where the software would not be able to save logs.? All of our computers got this from time to time, including the computer where the master file was located.
----
?
This year we had all our boxes going well until some power/network bumps during a thunderstorm....After the storm, our Win7 file-server was visibly running fine, but, the network file sharing was pissed.
----
?
We had issues with locking up and late updates on the two PCs running wireless. After dropping network cables to them everything was fine. Wireless router definitely had issues...

Addition of the TCP Networking Option!
?
?
While sharing an Access database continues to?work fine in most cases, even a few problem reports is a few too many, so I decided to add another networking option - TCP.? The TCP code is brand new.? While I've tested it extensively here, I would REALLY appreciate it if you would all test it?well before Field Day and let me know how you make out!?
?
The following narrative explains the background, differences and implementation in detail:
?
There are now two methods for networking my software - File Share and TCP.? File Share has been used very successfully since I first introduced the networking versions of my software in the late 1990s with the vast majority of users.? I've just added TCP in July, 2013 as a second networking option, that should help the few groups who encountered file share problems resulting from slow network connections and / or intermittent network connectivity.?
?
Access databases require solid, fast, uninterrupted networks to work properly.? If even one of your networked PCs has a slow / intermittent connection, all the PCs will suffer, waiting their turn as the database struggles to service the problem PC.? Several groups commented that as soon as they found and fixed the problem PC, everything came to life and worked great.
?
Networking in environments such as Field Day with the potential for power surges from generators, lots of stray RF, wireless connections near the end of the transmitter range, intermittent connectivity drops for any number of reasons, PCs of sometimes questionable performance using temporary, untested network setups are challenging!? In addition to your operating skills, Field Day will fully test the performance of your network too!
?
So, while the existing File Share networking option works fine on stable, fast networks, I decided to add another networking option, TCP.? TCP provides a second alternative for folks who may be struggling with intermittent network connectivity, which inhibits the normal, fast performance of the file sharing method.
?
The TCP method overcomes the delayed file share response problem since only one PC is actually connected to the file with the TCP method.? That said, even TCP can't overcome a network environment that is so unstable that even TCP communications become unreliable.? While the TCP option may be more forgiving, a reasonably stable network is required for any networking option!
?
In summary, the two options can be compared as follows:
?
File Share:
?
-? The tried and true method, proven to work fine, supporting multiple connections on stable, fast networks that have NO DROP in connectivity.
?
-? Requires all PCs to each navigate to and select the shared data file on the network by clicking File > Open, navigating to the shared file (with file and directory permissions set to update, not just read) and selecting it.? Setting up file sharing and permissions on your network is required for File Share.
?
-? Does NOT require enabling Status and Chat functions (though you will likely want to enjoy those features too.)
?
-? Updates to the clients appear based on the refresh rate you set in the Settings > Refresh Rate option.
?
-? Global updates to the file such as resequencing the counter, sorting or global removal of duplicates (all from the File menu options) should only be done when one PC is connected to the file.? There is no way for the software to tell if other clients are connected to the data file, so make sure all other clients are disconnected before performing these functions.
?
TCP:
?
-? First coded in July 2013, this option piggybacks on the functionality of the Status and Chat functions, to distribute adds, edits and deletes via TCP.
?
-? All PCs must enable the Status and Chat functions, which connect to the server on port 1000.? If you have virus / Internet protection software, you must set your protection software to allow this program to communicate on port 1000.
?
-? Does NOT require each client to navigate to the log file, so you don't have to worry about file share permissions.
?
-? The server should host the file locally on its hard drive, not over the network, to eliminate any possibility of network file access delays.
?
-? While loading the file may take longer via TCP, All Adds, Edits and Deletes should appear within one second on all clients.
?
-? ONLY the SERVER will perform BACKUPS and have the ability to perform other File menu options.? This can be an advantage or disadvantage, depending on which functions you want the clients to be able to perform.
?
-? For best performance, I don't recommend mixing and matching networking options.? Either use File Share or TCP for every PC.
?
-? With the TCP method, more will be asked of the server, so processor timed sending of CW may be less precise.
?
?
A Couple Other Notes:
?
?
-? I've had good reports from folks running both wired connections and wireless.? That said, it appears the folks who attempt wireless have trouble more frequently, even when the client is in very close proximity to the server.? While RFI getting into wired LAN cables happens occasionally, I've had more problem reports from folks trying wireless.? In many cases they follow up by saying they fixed the problem by replacing the wireless with cable.
?
- Keep ALL network equipment (especially your PCs, router and / or hubs) on a UPS!? Power fluctuations on the network and PC shut downs due to power loss will damage your data file, cause the loss of a block of records within your database or corrupt it completely.? If your PCs go down each time your generator runs out of gas, data loss is just a matter of time!

IARU HF 3.2 Now Available!

Hi All,
?
A minor scoring anomaly came to light with IARU HF 3.1 last evening.? If you delete the most recent contact, the scoring tracks properly, but if you choose not to resequence following the delete, the score for the next?contact entered is incorrect.? I've fixed this problem in version 3.2.? As always, upgrades are free to registered users.? You can download the latest from .
?
If you are all set with version 3.1 and don't want to install a new version right before tomorrow's contest, using 3.1 is fine.? If you wind up deleting a contact using 3.1, before you write your Cabrillo submittal file, just click File > Reset Counter and enter your contact total (or just close and restart the software) and then your score will be correct with 3.1.
?
Thanks for bearing with me as we sort through any anomalies that come to light with the new C# rewrites.? Thankfully there have been very few and Lord willing, I will continue to promptly fix whatever comes to light!

IARU HF 3.1, VHF 4,1 & Please Test AC log Beta!

Hi All,
?
Happy 4th of July!? I have a couple quick announcements to share:
?
?
IARU HF Contest Log 3.1 and VHF Contest Log 4.1 are now available!
?
These new versions are minor?updates to my new, C# rewrites.? The country lookup code has been corrected for / suffixes such as /R, /M, etc.?
?
There are also some very minor font adjustments to some of the forms.? Most folks running wide screen monitors are really happy with the way the new rewrites look, but there are still a significant percentage of folks running older style monitors.??I'm doing my best to keep the appearance okay on those monitors as well until, until most all folks transition to the new monitor style?format.
?
As always, these new versions are free to registered users.? Just uninstall the previous C#?versions from Windows Control panel and install the latest!
?
?
?
Please test the new AC Log 4.0 Beta!
?
Following the release of the first AC Log 4.0 Beta, lots of folks have been using the beta and offering enhancement suggestions.??I've been incorporating as many suggestions as I can in an iterative process, which is now about complete.? All the planned features for AC Log 4.0 are finished, represented in the current beta?and seem to be working well!? Please give the beta a try and let me know if any problems come to light!? If no significant problems arise, Lord willing, I plan to remove the beta status and release AC Log 4.0 in mid August!

Field Day Contest Log 4.0 File Submission Steps

Hi All,
?
First, thanks for all the great feedback and suggestions on Field Day Contest Log 4.0.? I really appreciate it!?
?
After using the program this past weekend, the two recurring suggestions that many users have sent along are to make it easier to change initials and to let me know that West Virginia did not color properly on the map.? I've already corrected the code for the map and I will definitely look at making the changing of the initials easier as well.
?
Many users, especially those who did not network, but are combining files from multiple PCs have been asking how to do that with the new version, so here are the steps to combine your data with version 4.0:

For Field Day Contest Log Version 4.0:

1. Start the Field Day Program.

1A. If you were not networked during the event and have multiple logs to combine, from each of the other PCs click File > Export ADIF and take them to the PC on which you are combining your master log. On that PC click File > Import ADIF and select each of the ADIF files. Then click File > Remove Duplicates (if you wish) and then click File > Sort Log on Date.

Make sure that you back up these files from each PC before you begin combining them! Also, don't merge the GOTA station QSOs into this file. GOTA contacts are added separately.

2. From the program's menu options click File > Write Cabrillo (Contest Submittal)?File. Complete the form that appears. Then click the Write Duplicate and Write Summary file command buttons.

3. When you click the Write Summary command button, you will be prompted to save the file and then given the option to view it. Click Yes to view the file. Then click the link at the lower left to visit website (you get extra bonus points submitting this way).

4. After navigating your web browser to , click on the ARRL Field Day entry form link. Then complete the form that appears. You can refer to the summary display to quickly retrieve the information you need to enter on the web form.

5. Click the Submit Entry button at the bottom of the form.

6. Since Rule 8.4.2 (above) requires an alphanumeric listing of calls by band and mode, you should also attach the yourcall.dup file to an e-mail addressed to fieldday@.... If you are planning to snail mail additional supporting documentation, you have the alternative of saving this file to a portable medium and including it in your packet.

AC Log 4.0 Beta 0.9 Ready for Testing!

Hi All,
?
?
AC Log 4.0 Beta 0.9 is Ready for Testing!
?
The latest program in my C# rewrite, Amateur Contact log (my general logging program) is ready for beta testing!? The folks on the users group have been giving the AC Log betas a good workout over the past few weeks, but I'd really like to have a much broader test before we call it complete.? Like the rest of my C# rewrites, every line of code is brand new, so every function needs thorough testing and I would love to have your help with that!
?
I have added a link on the AC Log page to download the new AC Log 4.0 beta:? , or you can download it directly by clicking this link:
?
Like the rest of my rewrites, this program requires the Microsoft .NET 4.0 Client package, so you'll need?Windows XP with Service Pack 3 or later to run it.?
?
You'll find steps to bring over your log file to AC Log 4.0?as test data here:? , which is simply transferring your log data via ADIF from AC Log 3.4.? Since this is entirely new code with a new file format, there isn't a way to bring over your customized settings from the old version of AC Log, but I think you'll find setting AC Log back up even quicker and easier than the old version!
?
Please consider any data you use in the AC Log 4.0 beta?as experimental / test data for now, until we are sure that no problems come to light!
?
You'll find lots of new features, like easily networking AC Log (making it a great alternative for club stations, DXpeditions and any ham who has more than one operating position in his home), lots of new fields?and enhancements to existing features like eQSL bulk uploads and downloads.?
?
There are too many enhancements and changes to list in detail here, but one new?feature I want to mention is the addition of the Callbook lookup option HamQTH.com, because it replaces the FCC /?RAC lookup option as a free callbook lookup alternative.? When I originally started writing AC Log back in 1997, there weren't any free callbook lookup alternatives available. I wanted to help with that, so I wrote code to convert the freely available FCC and RAC data files and then also coded the lookup routines in AC Log. As I'm sure you can imagine, this took a good bit of time.
?
Since HamQTH.com is now freely available, has more data than the FCC / RAC databases and is a snap to set up, it didn't make much sense for me to spend the time rewriting the FCC / RAC sections of conversion and lookup code. The HamQTH.com data source seems to be working fine and I think you will really enjoy this new, free?feature / alternative. You can learn more about HamQTH.com's free callbook lookup here:
?
?
?
Ready for Field Day This Weekend!?
?
Remember, you must be running the new, C#.NET?version?Field Day Contest Log?4.0 or the most recent VB6 versions (Contest 3.0 or Network 2.7) or you will not be able to log the new Ontario sections.? You should have installed the new versions and tested out the networking by now.? If you haven't yet done that, do it today!? Problems solved easily in a relaxed environment can seem insurmountable when the clock is ticking! Take some time now, get your Field Day equipment together, install the software and get everything set up, so when Field Day Saturday arrives, you can just relax and enjoy the contest!? Here is the Field Day download page:?
?
If you haven't yet located your password, please do that today too.? Don't wait until Friday or Saturday morning to realize you have lost your password and try to contact us!
?
I plan to run 1E and I hope to work you this weekend!

LoTW Server Not Completing Download to AC Log

Hi All,
?
I am aware of the current LoTW download problem.? Presently, the LoTW server is not including the "" tag at the end of the download that it is providing to AC Log, as it normally does.? This behavior appears to have begun sometime today.??
?
For a download to be accepted by AC Log, it must include the string: "" at the end of the downloaded file.? Otherwise, AC Log considers the download incomplete and returns the message that the download did not complete normally.? This happens occasionally when the LoTW?server is busy, but it appears to be consistent right now.
?
As soon as the LoTW server again includes the normal ""??tag in the data it provides, AC Log should resume its normal download function.? This is something the LoTW folks will have to correct.? Thanks for your patience.

ARRL 160 3.0 & ARRL 10M 4.0 Contest Logs Now Available!

Hi All,
?
?
ARRL 160 3.0 & ARRL 10M 4.0 Contest Logs are?now available!
?
Just a quick note to let you know that the next programs in?my C# rewrite, ?ARRL 160 3.0 & ARRL 10M 4.0 Contest Logs are?now available!? I've actually separated the 10 Meter program into two versions, one for domestic and one for DX participants.??The single, 10 Meter, VB6 version did both, but I was able to improve a couple things for DX participants by splitting it into two separate programs.? As always, these new versions are free to registered users.

Amateur Contact Log 3.4 Now Available - LoTW Speed Fix!

Hi All,
?
?
Amateur Contact Log 3.4 is Now Available!
?
If you are an active LoTW user, you know that since?LoTW?recently changed to a?new server, uploads and downloads with LoTW via AC Log have become quite slow.?I have made some VB6 code adjustments?that?are working better with the new servers.? These changes have?restored the speed to what we were used to, prior to the server change.
?
This is the only change to AC Log.? If you are not an active LoTW user, there is no other reason to upgrade.
?
As always, upgrades are free to registered users.? You'll find Amateur Contact Log 3.4 here:?
?
And upgrade instructions here :?
?
?
Amateur Contact Log, C#.NET Rewrite is Well Underway, But Please Hold Your Suggestions!
?
I've just about completed the contesting programs in the queue that I wanted to finish before the AC Log rewrite?(another announcement on ARRL 160 and ARRL 10 Meter Contest Logs will likely come soon).??I'm now focusing squarely on AC Log.? I've actually?been working on?AC Log?for several months now,?in between the time I had set for myself in finishing the contesting programs, and it seems to be going well.? I hope to have a beta out for testing sometime this summer!
?
As folks are hearing of the rewrite, they are understandably sending along their enhancement suggestions.? While I love your thoughts and ideas, if you could hold on to them until the rewrite is out I would really appreciate it.? This is not a typical upgrade, but rather a complete rewrite from the ground up that represents nearly a year and a half of work.? The first goal is get the rewrite back to providing most of the functionality that?AC Log 3.4 currently provides, plus the networking capability and a few other enhancements represented in the contesting software.? That set of goals already represents a huge?list that needs to be completed and thoroughly tested, before I can start focusing on additional enhancements for future versions of AC Log.?
?
Lord willing, the coming release of the AC Log?C#.NET rewrite?is just the first stepping stone to the future development of Amateur Contact Log.? I will be very eager to hear your enhancements suggestions when the time is right, but please hold them for now.? Thanks for your patience until then!

New Field Day Version Tips, Field Day & Digital Interface, AC Log Manual Group Reactivated & AD1C's Country Website Redesign

Hi All,

I have several N3FJP Software announcements to share...

Setting up the new Field Day Contest Log 4.0 for Networking...
?
If you are running Field Day Contest Log 4.0 as a stand alone application, simply install the software and you are good to go.? If you are setting up multiple clients in network configuration, updating a common data file, the?networking setup of the new version is almost identical to the old, VB6 version.? The only difference is the new version allows you to click File > New to create a new file in a shared location, instead of having to use Windows Explorer to copy the .mdb file, as you had to do with the VB6 version.? This makes it even easier to get started using the new version!
?
In short, simply put the LogData.mdb file in a folder location that is accessible with permissions for updating (not just reading) to all clients on your network.? From the menu options of each client, click File > Open, navigate to the file and select it.? That will do the trick.? Once you have done that, enter a test contact from each client.? They all should appear within 60 seconds on each client (faster if you click Settings > Refresh Rate and increase the speed).
?
If you attempt to log a contact and receive "unable to execute SQL Command", your folder permissions are set to read, so you can see the file, but not update.? Setting your permissions properly will correct that.
?
For enabling messaging, band message status, etc.,?from Field Day Contest log 4.0's menu options?click Settings > Network?and follow the directions on the form that appears.? It is not necessary to enable these features to log in network configuration.
?
You'll find lots more tips when you click File > Network from the new version, or?here: , which is more applicable to the old VB6 version:?
?
Above all, do not wait until Field Day to set up your network!? Problems solved easily in a relaxed environment can seem insurmountable when the clock is ticking!? Take some time now, get your Field Day equipment together, install the software and get everything set up, so?when Field Day Saturday arrives, you can just relax and enjoy the contest!
?

?Don't Wait Until Field Day to Find Your Password!
?
Every year, the number of folks realizing they can't find their passwords has grown, to the point that last year we nearly couldn't keep up with the requests that came flooding in Saturday morning.? Hopefully you can find your password, but if you can't, please touch base with us well in advance!
?
?
Field Day and Digital Interface!
?
As you all know, K7RE RTTY will not work with the new, C#.NET?versions of my software, but now there is an alternative that will!? Ed, W4ELP and Rick, KD8LCD have developed a script to use the C#.NET version of my Field Day software with the DM 780 digital mode program!
?
I'm not active on the digital modes?so I haven't?given this a try myself, but I've seen a video of it in action and it appears to work well!??

N3FJP Manual Group Reactivated!
?
Royce Bell, KX7Q writes in part...
?
"The software manual for Amateur Contact Log was completed several years ago and has well-served its purpose in the meantime. But, as many of you realize, there is a need for revision or rewriting of several parts of the manual.
?
Scott and I have communicated about the matter and he wants to get the manual into a true online form, as you might expect. We can use the current manual as a rough draft for a new, online manual, but there are significant sections of the manual that will need to be completely revised and/or rewritten. Other parts will be completely jettisoned in favor of newer, more accurate information. Still other parts may well just be deleted.
?
Consequently, I am reactivating the AC Log Manual Group, hoping knowledgeable and experienced Amateur Contact Log users will contribute their collective wisdom to the project.
?
One point of concern: Everybody loves to join groups, but we need to narrow the group to those who can actually participate in the project. If you are a new user, the manual group will not help you learn the software.
?
If you know and are an experienced user of Amateur Contact Log, we need your help. Please go to the N3FJP Manual Group -- -- and submit a request for approval to that group."
--
?
Scott back at the keys...
?
The original manual has been a super resource for users to draw on, so getting it caught back up with the more recent N3FJP Software enhancements and now the C#.NET rewrites will be wonderful!
?
Kim will be creating the web pages, so you don't need any HTML experience.? She just needs the words and content, which is where?all experienced N3FJP Software Users can really help.
?
While the manual group is titled AC Log Manual, we hope to develop on line help pages for both AC Log, as well as pages specific to the contesting software.? So, even if your primary interest is the contesting software, we still need your help!
?
Writing up the help and documentation is a big effort.? With your help there, I can continue devoting my time to upgrading and rewriting the software, so the rewrites will be available more quickly for us all to enjoy!
?
?
Country Files Not Presently Accessible for Download from Software.
?
Jim, AD1C, who does a fantastic job maintaining our country files for us, is presently reworking his website.? At this time, clicking File > Download Country Files from AD1C will not work.? It remains to be seen whether Jim can reestablish the paths currently coded in the software, or if new software version releases will be required.? Jim and I will let you know as soon as plans firm up.? In the meantime, you can download the country files from Jim's website manually and save them to the location shown when you click File > Show File Locations from AC Log and the new contesting software's?menu options.
?
Jim, AD1C writes...
?
"Hi Folks,
?
?I'm the process of re-designing the country files web site at:
?
?I am trying to retain all the original content. However, it may take??a few days before most things have been restored. There are probably??many broken links right now. It will take many days to re-format all??the old release notices, though I plan to do the ones from this year??ASAP.
?
?You can subscribe to the above URL to get an RSS feed of the??postings. Some people may find this convenient.
?
?None of the contest files (downloads) have moved, all can still be??found inside of:
?
?Some of the others will have to move, unfortunately. If any of the??non-contest URLS are built into your software, please let me know??ASAP (I've already heard from Scott N3FJP)."

November Sweepstakes 5.0 Now Available, Field Day Reminder, K7RE Status & More!

Hi All,
?
The ninth program in my C# rewrite project is now available!
?
?
November Sweepstakes Contest Log 5.0 is Now Available!
?
You'll find the new?November Sweepstakes Contest Log software on the?November Sweepstakes Contest Log page at .? As always, upgrades are free to registered users and of course this includes?our N3FJP Software Package users!
?
Until November Sweepstakes Contest Log 5.0 has a contest under its belt, you'll find both the new version and the older, tried and true VB6 version on the web site. November Sweepstakes Contest Log 5.0 is brand new, better, has additional features not found in the VB6 version and represents the future of N3FJP Software. It is also completely new code - every single line of it!? While the template has been tested extensively and the new, C#.NET versions for the major contests this year have performed very well, this will be the first use as applied specifically to this contest. It is quite possible that a contest specific bug or two remain to be found, so I want to give you the option of using the VB6 version if you prefer.
?
?
Field Day is just 42 days away!? Have you downloaded and installed the new versions that supports the new Ontario sections yet?!
?
Field Day () is right around the corner and this will be the first Field Day contest using the new Ontario sections!? Everyone must use either the latest C#.NET version () or newly archived VB6 versions () released after last year's contest, so everyone should be installing new software for this year's contest.? If you do not use these new versions, you will be unable to log the new Ontario sections, which will surely be frustrating to your team.
?
If you aren't sure whether to use the new C#.NET version or older, VB6 versions, here are some important considerations: (
?
Hopefully, you have already installed the new Field Day software, tested out all your PCs and network.? You definitely do not want to wait until the week of Field Day?to do so.? With the additional security in later Windows operating systems, it is more important than ever to make sure that you have your drives / directories properly shared, so that all the PCs can access the data file.? This is quick and easy in a relaxed setting, but can seem insurmountable moments before Field Day when you are seeing errors and the clock is ticking.? Relax and have fun on Field Day by making sure your software and network are ready to go well in advance!
?
?
Sadly, K7RE RTTY is Not Presently Available.
?
K7RE RTTY needs a website home, at least for distribution, if not future development.? If you would like to host the distribution of the software, please contact Brian, briank7re@....
?
Here is Brian's announcement to his users.? Brian writes:
?
To All Past and Present and Future K7RE RTTY Users:

I find that I can no longer support the program.?
?
Scott is doing a fabulous job updating all of his programs to the new .NET programming language. Unfortunately the new .NET language will not support the older VB6 language, in which K7RE RTTY was written. In addition some of the programming plug in's used in the RTTY program will not work with .NET, and even so are not supported either.

I find that have no ambitions to learn, at my age, an entirely new programming language. In addition, I have developed new interests within Ham Radio, since the K7RE RTTY program was begun in 2005.

I have offered anyone who cares to try to take over the program everything that I have done, but have had no takers at all since we posted the request several months ago. Greg DeChant W8GCD attempted to take it over, but he ran into serious health problems and was unable to continue. This is why there is no longer a Web page for the program, as Greg has discontinued his Yahoo Groups as well as his Web page.

I still have the source code and all other files available. But keep in mind, as Scott moves all of his excellent programs over to .NET, the program, as now written in VB6, will not work with his newer apps.

All software has a life span, and the K7RE RTTY has reached it's limit I am afraid.

So in summary, someone needs to help out Scott if possible. I will try and offer very limited support to users who have already been using the program. If someone wishes to set up a Web Page for K7RE RTTY, I would be glad to send them everything that I have, all that I ask is that you offer it for free.

Thanks for All of Your Support Over the Years,

Brian K7RE

Back to Field Day for a Final...
?
I've got to quickly share that I had the pleasure of catching up with Ed Roberts, WA3IHR last Wednesday after at least a decade, possibly two, since our last visit.? Back in 1976, when I was 14, Ed (Mr. Roberts to me at the time) invited?Dad and me to some sort of radio event that he called Field Day.? Of course, sitting behind the microphone, working station after station with antennas strung about?and hum of the generator as backdrop was magic to this 14 year old!
?
That one evening set the course for a very big portion of my life.? Had Ed not invited us to Field Day, I wonder if I ever would have discovered Amateur Radio, had the opportunity to learn to write software and what I would be doing right now.? It was also magic to look Ed in the eye last Wednesday and tell him what a profound effect his Field Day invitation had on my life.?
?
As you are planning Field Day this year, please be sure to?welcome the young folks in your circle.? You never know where that simple invitation may lead!

The eighth program in my C# rewrite project is now available!
?

CQ WW DX?Contest Log 4.0 is Now Available!
?
You'll find the new CQ WW DX Contest Log?software on the CQ WW DX Contest Log Page at .? It is networkable and replaces both the previous stand alone and network versions.? Customized Splash Screens Work Fine with the New Versions.
?
If my son Brad, KB3MNE, has created a splash screen of your call sign for you to use with the old versions of my software, it will also work fine with the new versions of my contesting software and the new, future version of AC Log, once complete.? To use your image with the new file, simply move splash.jpg to the shared directory for the new software.? You can find the location from any of the new C# rewrites by clicking File > Show File Locations and noting the location of your shared settings files.? Just copy splash.jpg there.

If you don't have a customized splash screen and would like to learn more, please visit the KB3MNE Call Sign Graphics Page here:?

?
Are We There Yet (updated)?
?
Now that the word is out that I'm rewriting the software, folks have had a taste of the new versions and enthusiasm is building for more, I'm getting swamped with questions along the lines of:
"When do you think you will have a program for ____________ (insert your favorite existing contest, new contest, AC Log, or additional feature here).
?
I can't accurately predict target dates for the rewrites. Some days are very productive, while others takes an entire day to get a single line of code to work the way I want. On average, with the exception of the AC Log rewrite, which will be a huge project unto itself, it is looking like about two weeks per program. With about 50 programs in total, I have a multi year project ahead.
?
My present plan, in this order and Lord willing, is to:
?
- Finish rewriting the major contesting programs.? This includes ARRL November?Sweepstakes, ARRL 10 Meter and ARRL 160 Meter.? At about two weeks per program, I hope to have these three complete in roughly six weeks or so.
?
?- Rewrite AC Log.? I can't predict how long this will take.? There are lots of additional features not present in the contesting software that I will have to rewrite and I simply don't know how long that will take.? It may be two months or ten months.??We will see how things go.
?
?- Rewrite the remaining, currently supported contesting programs and?state QSO party programs.
?
?- Add new contests and features
?
Please stay tuned to the Announcements group and I will let you know as each new program / update is released.

Brand New, VHF Contest Log Rewrite 4.0 is Now Available!

Hi All,
?
The sixth program in my C# rewrite project is now available!
?
VHF Contest Log 4.0 is Now Available!
?
This program is the next in the series of my C#.NET rewrites, it is networkable and replaces both VHF Contest Log 3.0 and VHF Network?Log 2.5.? The new program supports these contests for both Fixed and Rover stations:
?
- ARRL January VHF Sweepstakes
- ARRL June VHF QSO Party
- ARRL UHF Contest
- ARRL September VHF QSO Party
- CQ World Wide VHF
?
You'll find the new VHF Contest Log software on the VHF Page at . As always, upgrades are free to registered users. This includes either the previous contest or network versions and of course our N3FJP Software Package users!
?
Until VHF Contest Log 4.0 has a contest under its belt, you'll find both the new version and the older, tried and true VB6 versions on the web site. VHF Contest Log 4.0 is brand new, better, has additional features not found in the VB6 versions and represents the future of N3FJP Software. It is also completely new code - every single line of it!? While the template has been tested extensively and the new, C#.NET versions for NAQP, CQ 160 and International DX performed very well during those contests, this will be the first use as applied to the VHF contests.? It is quite possible that a contest specific bug or two remain to be found, so I want to give you the option of using the VB6 version if you prefer.

Brand New, CQ WPX Rewrite 3.0 Now Available!

Hi All,
?
The fifth program in my C# rewrite project is now available!
?
?
CQ?WPX?Contest Log 3.0 is Now Available!
?
This program is the next in the series of my C#.NET rewrites, it is networkable and replaces both CQ WPX Contest Log 2.8 and CQ WPX Network Log 2.6.
?
You'll find the new CQ WPX Contest Log software on the CQ WPX Page at .? As?always, upgrades are free to registered users. This includes either the previous contest or network versions and of course our N3FJP Software Package users!
?
Until CQ WPX Contest Log 3.0 has a contest under its belt, you'll find both the new version and the older, tried and true VB6 versions on the web site. ?
Our web site, gets a much needed facelift!
?
Next time you visit , Kimberly and I hope you will enjoy a fresh and more contemporary experience.? My wife Kimberly, KA3SEQ, had been working very hard on enhancing the web site these last few months and I love what she has put together!? We just published the new site last night, so if you still see the old when you visit, just refresh the page.?
?
Much like the new versions of the software, the web site is brand new, better and untested.? Please let us know if you discover any links that aren't working right, typos, etc.
?
?
Are we there yet?
?
Now that the word is out that I'm rewriting the software, folks have had a taste of the new versions and enthusiasm is building for more, I'm getting swamped with questions along the lines of:
?
"When do you think you will have a program for? ____________? (insert your favorite existing contest, new contest, AC Log, or additional feature here).
?
I can't accurately predict?target dates for the rewrites.? Some days are very productive, while others takes an entire day to get a single line of code to work the way I want.? On average, with the exception of the AC Log rewrite, which will be a huge project unto itself, it is looking like about two weeks per program.? With about 50 programs in total, I have a multi year project ahead.
?
My present plan, in this order,?is to:
?
- Finish rewriting the major contesting programs (and I should be able to stay ahead of this year's contest calendar)
-?Rewrite AC Log
- Rewrite the state QSO party programs
-?Add new contests and features
?
Please stay tuned to the Announcements?group and I will let you know as each new program / update is released.

New, Rewritten Field Day Contest / Network Log 4.0 is Now Available!

Hi All,
?
In 1976 at 14 years old, a local family friend took my Dad and me to a Field Day?site and started this wonderful adventure, so it is with special excitement that I share the announcement for this upgrade:
?
Field Day Contest Log 4.0 is Now Available!
?
This program is the next in the series of C#.NET rewrites, is networkable?and replaces both Field Field Day Contest Log 3.0 and Field Day Network Log?2.7.?
?
You'll find the new Field Day?Contest Log software on the Field Day link at .? As always, upgrades are free to registered users.? This includes either the previous contest or network versions and of course our N3FJP Software Package users!
?
Until Field Day Contest Log 4.0?has a contest under its belt, you'll find both the new version and the older, tried and true VB6 versions on the website. Field Day Contest Log 4.0 is brand new, better, has additional features not found in the VB6 versions and represents the future of N3FJP Software. It is also completely new code - every single line of it!? While the template has been tested extensively and the new,?C#.NET?versions for NAQP, CQ 160 and International DX?performed very well during those contests, this will be the first use as applied to Field Day. It is quite possible that a contest specific bug or two remain to be found, so I want to give you the option of using the VB6 version if you prefer.
?
Here are a few considerations to help you decide:
?
- For networking, everyone in your group must all either use the old VB6 version, or the new C# version. You will not be able to mix and match and update a single common data file in a networked environment. The old, VB6 version will not be able to update the .MDB log file used by the new version, and vice versa.? If you do run a combination, you'll have to transfer your data via ADIF.
?
- The new version will not run on Win 95 and operating systems prior to XP have been minimally?tested. The C#.NET template from which the new Field Day software was created also produced programs for NAQP, CQ 160 and ARRL International DX so far this year. The programs ran with great success in those contests, but I suspect any operating systems used prior to XP were extremely limited. Given the minimal testing on pre XP systems, I would recommend staying with the VB6 version if you are still running an older operating system, prior to XP.
?
- The new rewrite screen layout is very similar to the old version, but it was designed with wide screen monitors in mind. It looks okay on the older, narrow width format monitors, but shines on the newer ones. Check it out on all the PCs you plan to use in advance, just to make sure it plays well with your screen size and resolution.
?
- The new version will key your CW interface by your serial port or USB to serial adapter (or Winkeyer), but since parallel ports are now extremely rare, parallel ports are not currently supported in the new version.
?
- If you plan to interface directly with K7RE RTTY, you must use the VB6 version.? C#.NET no longer supports the communication protocols we used in VB6 that allow the programs to talk to each other. If you would like to help make K7RE RTTY compatible with the new, C# versions of my software, please contact Brian, K7RE here: briank7re@.... Brian would love to hear from you and really appreciate your help!? If you will be using another digital program, you can transfer your contacts to the new version via ADIF, provided your digital program exports all the necessary fields.
?
-? The new rewrite requires Microsoft .NET 4.0 client or later.? If you have an operating system later than XP, or if you have been keeping up with Windows XP updates, you likely already have what you need.? If you haven't, when you install the software, if it doesn't find .NET 4.0 Client or later, it will install it for you automatically from Microsoft's website, but this will require an Internet connection, so don't wait until you are at your Field Day site, without Internet, to do the installation!
?
?
Whether you ultimately decide to use the new version this year or stick with the old for one more year, please?download the new version, install it on all the machines you use for Field Day each year (well in advance of the contest) and give it a try, so you can have a good sense of the program for the future!

N3FJP Software - Multiple Quick Announcements!

Hi All,
?
In addition to the new International DX Contest Log 3.0 I announced last week, for this weekend's contest, I have several quick announcements to share:
?
?
State QSO Party Log Updates Now Available (VB6 Versions)!
?
Minnesota QSO Party Log 1.7
?
-? Scoring changed to 2 points for all QSOs
?
North Carolina QSO Party Log 1.6
?
-? Added 6M & 2M
-? All Phone Contacts 2 Points
-? Added DC (District of Columbia) Multiplier
-? Updated Bonus Point Calls
?
Washington Salmon Run 2.1
?
-? Added 2M
-? Changed CW scoring from 4 points to 3 points
?
As always, these upgrades are all free to registered users.? You'll find them on the State QSO Party page at .
?
?
A Note to State QSO Party Sponsors:
?
If you've been following along, you know that I'm rewriting all my software in C#.NET.? After nine months of work, I now have the contesting template complete,?but I still have a great deal of work ahead.? It is taking me on average about two weeks per program, with about 50 programs to rewrite.
?
With all that is on my plate, time for updating the VB6 versions of my software is limited, but I'm doing my best where I can.? It is a great help when contest sponsors let me know exactly what they would like changed and give me a punch list of things to do. It saves me from wading through the rules, comparing the old and new rules, hoping I find all the changes and wondering if I'm interpreting everything correctly.?
?
If your state QSO party rules change, I can't promise, but if you review the current version of my software and then give me a specific, concise bullet list of requested changes, it's much more likely that I will be able to implement them.? Thanks in advance for your cooperation!

?
K7RE RTTY - Anyone interested in taking over development?

It appears that Greg is no longer active with K7RE RTTY.? I have been corresponding with Brian, K7RE (the original developer), who asked me to see if anyone would like to take over its growth and development.? Brian will supply all the source code?and resources needed.

K7RE RTTY is currently available for download here:?

If you are interested, please contact Brian (and CC me when you e-mail him) for more information?here briank7re@...

?
Beware PC "Cleaners" - They May Eat Your Log!

I've mentioned this before, but I continue to receive horror stories from folks who run?some types of?PC "cleaners", only to discover they have indiscriminately removed every file with a .log extension from their hard drive!? Some versions don't even ask for verification!? The .log extension is used in many applicaitons besides?Amateur Radio, so this could present a variety of problems.?

?
Other Software "Protection" Problems

PC "cleaners" aren't the only problem.? Recently, I've received reports of virus protection software that checks for keystrokes and shuts down the program if it believes it finds a threat.? That's fine in theory, but one of the events that causes it to fire is using space bar to tab with my software!? I understand this virus software is primarily distributed by Comcast.

ARRL Int DX Log 3.0!, Ten Ten 2.9, Winkeyer, WOTA and More!

Hi All,
?
Just in time for next weekend's contest...
?
?
ARRL International DX?Contest Log?3.0 is Now Available!
?
This program follows NAQP and CQ 160?as the third application of my C#.NET rewrite that is now complete!? Until the new version has a contest under its belt, you'll find both the latest and the older, tried and true VB6 versions on the website. The latest version is brand new, better, has additional features not found in the VB6 versions and represents the future of N3FJP Software. It is also completely new code - every single line of it! While the template has been tested extensively and both the NAQP and CQ 160 betas performed very well during those contests, this will be the first use as applied to this specific contest. It is quite possible that a contest specific bug or two remain to be found, so I want to give you the option of using the VB6 version if you prefer.
?
You'll find the new ARRL International DX Contest software on the ARRL International DX link at?. As always, upgrades are free to registered users!
?
?
Winkeyer Users, Please test ARRL International DX Contest Log 3.0 (even if you don't plan to work this contest)!
?
Steve, K1EL of Winkeyer () has completely rewritten the Winkeyer portion of the software. Depending on the Winkeyer version, a few bugs came to light during the CQ 160 contest.? Steve has been working hard on the code and it looks like the problems have been corrected, but we won't know for sure that all is well with your Winkeyer version until you give it a good?test.? Even if you don't plan to work this contest, please download the software, simulate using it in a contest with your Winkeyer and let us know how it goes.
?
?
Ten Ten Contest Log 2.9 is Now Available!
?
Some Ten Ten contesters logging folks without 10-10 numbers developed the habit of entering a numeric zero in the 10-10 field instead of accepting the default None, which led to improper scoring.? Version 2.9 (still VB6) has been updated to correctly score that scenario.? You'll find the software on the 10-10 QSO Party Log page at . As always, upgrades are free to registered users.
?
?
WOTA Gets a Reprieve!
?
The Who's on the Air (WOTA) server has been active for seven years now, but only supporting a handful of users.? We still think it is a neat concept, but given the limited usage, website expense, server / electrical expense, etc., we had pretty much resigned to the idea that it's time to take the server off line.? Thankfully, and with much appreciation Mike, W0DDD (who has been hosting WOTA) stepped in, agreed to not only continue to do so for at least another year, but take a more active roll in developing the server / concept!?
?
In AC Log you'll find it by click Settings > DX Spotting > WOTA.
?
For more on the WOTA concept, please visit:?
?
If you have an interest in WOTA, want to help with its development, promotion or need support, please join us on the WOTA e-mail group:?
?
?
Please Join us at the Water Cooler on 21.446!
?
I've mentioned this before, so this is just?a quick reminder.? Our Water Cooler concept, where we leave our rigs turned to 21.446 with the squelch up while we are working and enjoy quick chats throughout the day?is going very well.? We also have a quick propagation test every Thursday at 3:00 PM Eastern.? There is more activity during the weekday, but weekend activity is increasing too and we would love to have you join us!? For more on the Water Cooler concept, please visit:?

NAQP SSB Reminder with 3.1 Beta!

Hi All,
?
Just a quick reminder that the NAQP SSB contest starts at 18:00 tomorrow (Saturday)?and the NAQP beta software is free!? You can enter this contest with two transmitters, so this is the perfect opportunity to invite a Field Day buddy or two over, get two stations set up at your house, get some Field Day practice in and of course, enjoy NAQP!
?
?
The NAQP beta used during the CW contest was?3.0.? 3.1 is up now, but the only significant change applicable to the SSB contest is that on the Cabrillo output, the Club Name tag was corrected to Club.? There were no reports of any basic logging function problems during the CW contest with 3.0.
?
Again, the NAQP Beta is free, so please give it a good workout tomorrow and let me know how it goes.? I want to hear from everyone, but most of all, please test it in a multi transmitter network setup if you can.? I would really love some feedback on how it works out for you with multiple clients updating the database simultaneously.
?
You'll find the NAQP Beta, (as well as the tried and true VB6 versions) on the NAQP page at , or you can download the beta by clicking on this link:
?
?
Please be sure to uninstall the 3.0 beta from Windows Control Panel before you install 3.1
?
Enjoy the contest!
