Re: Alice
Thanks for the solid suggestions JHR. I'm here because I believe in that methodology of exploration. I'm just a week into it and have found a wide range of very useful resources. My background

Re: Alice
I built a battery box like, um 22+ years ago, that served me for almost 20 years, and parked the details in the files section of this site ( /g/MicBuilders/files/Ken%27s%20stuff

Re: Alice
David I¡¯m still not 100% sure what we are helping you with here. If unit is a simple project you can do with your son that is audio related we can come up with suggestions. I feel you are trying to

Re: Alice
Howdy David. You and your son might begin the project researching how microphones are constructed, how they work, and how they are used in various applications by searching the Internet and

Re: Alice
Thank you again Scott. It¡¯s an impressive device. As I mentioned earlier my son has had some significant life setbacks and our family is adapting to a new reality. Maybe next Christmas we¡¯ll be in

Re: Alice
Phantom power is defined as 48vdc through a parallel pair of 6.8k resistors, so the total current ends up being about 14mA total.? A lot of mic manufacturers build their mics to handle lower

Re: Alice
Thanks for the robust reply. Luckily google searches provide me with explanations of what are: high impedance converter and unity gain. I noticed that the XLR had a significant voltage range 5-48

Re: Alice
That sounds like a cheap and cheerful solution. I¡¯m not opposed to 9 volt batteries. I can ask my son if he wants to lower the technical difficulty threshold ¡ Where would I find a reliable

Re: Alice
If you're not allergic to using a battery, this sounds like an application for a classic "battery box" design. FET on the capsule, and then after that it's basically a resistor and cap or two, plus a

Re: Alice
David, thanks for the props! You are asking "can I simply buy a FET, the OPA Alice and use it for the rest of the DIY-perks project?" It is a little more complicated than that. Condenser capsules need

Hi Jules. your name keeps being mentioned in things I read so I thought I¡¯d reach out and first say thanks for putting out support and product that helps mic builders, of which I seem to be

Re: [allowed] [MicBuilders] Help choosing biasing resistor for simple p48 AUM-5241L-HD microphone
Heya, I have built a pair of 5042s. They're amazing microphones for nature recording, but unfortunately when I try to record even in a fairly quiet room they pick up every car that goes past, every

Re: [allowed] [MicBuilders] Help choosing biasing resistor for simple p48 AUM-5241L-HD microphone
Hi Helena, If I was building lavalier mics for interviews, and they don't need to be hidden, I think I would start with the PUI AOM5024 omnis. Besides a more forgiving pickup pattern, they're also

Re: [allowed] [MicBuilders] Help choosing biasing resistor for simple p48 AUM-5241L-HD microphone
If visuals aren't an issue one can go for 'plant mics'. Just on a discrete stand. Omni, cardio or hyper cardio. Around a table boundary microphones can do wonders. Easy to build with Omni ¨¦lectret

Re: [allowed] [MicBuilders] Help choosing biasing resistor for simple p48 AUM-5241L-HD microphone
Podium mics are a good idea, I'll have a look into those. My reasoning for using lav mics is that I'll be interviewing people who aren't experienced with microphones and want to be able to have

Re: [allowed] [MicBuilders] Help choosing biasing resistor for simple p48 AUM-5241L-HD microphone
Most Lavs are Omni, as they can be positioned at different angles while hiding them. Podium mics are cardioid/hypercardioid and there are small ones of those. That looks like a cool capsule BTW. I

Re: [allowed] [MicBuilders] Help choosing biasing resistor for simple p48 AUM-5241L-HD microphone
It is a little big, yeah. Choices are a bit limited for a decent small cardioid capsule. If anyone knows of one that I haven't considered I would love to hear it, can never hurt to have more. It's not

Re: [allowed] [MicBuilders] Help choosing biasing resistor for simple p48 AUM-5241L-HD microphone
As well as Gerard's advice re voltage, keep an eye on the current that it doesn't exceed the manufacturer's spec, which I believe is approx 500 uA. BTW, that capsule is 14mm in diameter - kind of big

Ricardo addresses this in his /g/MicBuilders/files/Ricardo/SimpleP48/simpleP48.pdf Basically you want the resistor to give between 5 V ¨C 10 V across the capsule. But check that the

Hello all, I suspect that the topic of choosing the right resistor values for biasing FETs might be done to death by people as inexperienced as me, but I've searched through the messages and haven't
