Re: Alice
Hi Jules. your name keeps being mentioned in things I read so I thought I¡¯d reach out and first say thanks for putting out support and product that helps mic builders, of which I seem to be

Re: [allowed] [MicBuilders] Help choosing biasing resistor for simple p48 AUM-5241L-HD microphone
Heya, I have built a pair of 5042s. They're amazing microphones for nature recording, but unfortunately when I try to record even in a fairly quiet room they pick up every car that goes past, every

Re: [allowed] [MicBuilders] Help choosing biasing resistor for simple p48 AUM-5241L-HD microphone
Hi Helena, If I was building lavalier mics for interviews, and they don't need to be hidden, I think I would start with the PUI AOM5024 omnis. Besides a more forgiving pickup pattern, they're also

Re: [allowed] [MicBuilders] Help choosing biasing resistor for simple p48 AUM-5241L-HD microphone
If visuals aren't an issue one can go for 'plant mics'. Just on a discrete stand. Omni, cardio or hyper cardio. Around a table boundary microphones can do wonders. Easy to build with Omni ¨¦lectret

Re: [allowed] [MicBuilders] Help choosing biasing resistor for simple p48 AUM-5241L-HD microphone
Podium mics are a good idea, I'll have a look into those. My reasoning for using lav mics is that I'll be interviewing people who aren't experienced with microphones and want to be able to have

Re: [allowed] [MicBuilders] Help choosing biasing resistor for simple p48 AUM-5241L-HD microphone
Most Lavs are Omni, as they can be positioned at different angles while hiding them. Podium mics are cardioid/hypercardioid and there are small ones of those. That looks like a cool capsule BTW. I

Re: [allowed] [MicBuilders] Help choosing biasing resistor for simple p48 AUM-5241L-HD microphone
It is a little big, yeah. Choices are a bit limited for a decent small cardioid capsule. If anyone knows of one that I haven't considered I would love to hear it, can never hurt to have more. It's

Re: [allowed] [MicBuilders] Help choosing biasing resistor for simple p48 AUM-5241L-HD microphone
As well as Gerard's advice re voltage, keep an eye on the current that it doesn't exceed the manufacturer's spec, which I believe is approx 500 uA. BTW, that capsule is 14mm in diameter - kind of big

Re: [allowed] [MicBuilders] Help choosing biasing resistor for simple p48 AUM-5241L-HD microphone
Ricardo addresses this in his /g/MicBuilders/files/Ricardo/SimpleP48/simpleP48.pdf Basically you want the resistor to give between 5 V ¨C 10 V across the capsule. But check that the

Help choosing biasing resistor for simple p48 AUM-5241L-HD microphone
Hello all, I suspect that the topic of choosing the right resistor values for biasing FETs might be done to death by people as inexperienced as me, but I've searched through the messages and haven't

Re: Felted wool wind screens
I've built several variants of the Alex Rice preamp, as well as a couple of Jules' very nice OPA design (and I'm looking forward to the mentioned updates). I've seen the Metal Marshmallow products

Re: Felted wool wind screens
Can I ask about your hydrophone plan? I might suggest looking into the metal marshmallow pro diy kit for an inexpensive, well buffered phantom powered piezo preamp if that's the direction you're going

Re: Felted wool wind screens
Very nice, professional-looking work. I'm collecting parts to build hydrophones, but after that I'm planning to make some Sound Sleuthers (too many projects). Ben

Re: Felted wool wind screens
The bodies are from some 1/4 inch trs connector from AliExpress I had laying around. Perfect fit, and they're aluminium so they're light and shielded.

Those wind screens look great! Slightly different topic, but what are the mic bodies themselves? Repurposed connectors of some sort? Ben

Re: Felted wool wind screens
This is great! One of my projects for 2024 is to do a wind screen/DeadCat instructable and really dive into both how to make these and the acoustic properties for how they work. Great work!

Helena, that¡¯s pretty sweet. I know nothing about felting but I¡¯d like to give it a go.
