Padding a TSSB2555B for drums (or other loud source)
I've been tinkering with this for a bit and wanted to share. I padded my OPA Board with a 220pF cap across the 1Gig resistor and measured. I am getting about 15db padding and it works great on drums

Re: capsules for close micing drums - suggestions?
The cheap chinese dynamic capsule I have is 450 ohms. Presumably designed for use without a transformer. So the ones you mention are significantly different. Definitely worth a try for the price. I

Re: capsules for close micing drums - suggestions?
Very true. I¡¯m going to try and do some testing. I¡¯m thinking for the 25mm ones the chance is less for bottoming out but¡ Neumann claims 147db max SPL in one their LDC¡¯s with pad engaged. Best

Re: capsules for close micing drums - suggestions?
yes I'm also wondering which of my many existing condenser mics would make good drum mics with a pad added. Or that i can build from the spares I have on hand. Those cheap 25mm OD brass electrets from

Re: capsules for close micing drums - suggestions?
The pressure effects are not at all frequencies, since a drum head is tuned. Directionality will still be there for transients and other important information. -Scott Sent from a mobile device. Please

Re: capsules for close micing drums - suggestions?
Ive been working on some drum mics from modding my builds and a sub kick. Originally I thought I would need a transformer on the 6.5" woofer I was using. Turns out I don't just wire straight to the

Re: capsules for close micing drums - suggestions?
Rather like removing the transformer from a SM57 then? I have heard about that mod as one that may be good for drums, but I don't actually have a SM57, and maybe I should.

Re: capsules for close micing drums - suggestions?
You are of course quite right about the directivity pattern, proximity effect, pressure chamber and flat response issues, however the conclusions you draw from those facts don't match my experience.

Re: capsules for close micing drums - suggestions?
I forgot to mention, quite often these capsules are low impedance (about 10-20 ohms) because they are generally paired with transformer, so the output level is lower than a standard SM57, but since

Re: capsules for close micing drums - suggestions?
The most prominent feature of the RE20 is its directivity pattern (Variable D), which makes it less prone to proximity (bass boost) effect. BUT. Putting a mic inside a tom completely defeats its

capsules for close micing drums - suggestions?
I'm thinking of making or modifying some mics to use for close micing drums in a studio situation. They will often be inside the toms. Criteria, reasonably flat response at least from 50hz to 10k,

Re: Cardioid capsule with flat response? Primo EM204 or better alternatives?
Yes. The internal Fet is the same as the TSB2590 so a 100K will work for the resistor vale Best Regards, Jules Ryckebusch

Re: Cardioid capsule with flat response? Primo EM204 or better alternatives?
That sounds good Jules! I will wait for that comparison Also thanks to Julian for the JLI-160A advice. I see is built-in FET so I can make a simple P48, right? any advice about this particular capsule

Re: Cardioid capsule with flat response? Primo EM204 or better alternatives?
I have some of those. Will be testing them in a side by side recording with the TSB2590 and an orchestra next Thursday Best Regards, Jules Ryckebusch

Re: Cardioid capsule with flat response? Primo EM204 or better alternatives?
I¡¯ve tried the JLI-160A11UC680 https://www.jlielectronics.com/microphone-capsules/jli-160a11uc680/ Is like an EM-200 but better, cheaper too, the sound is brighter and the bass more controlled.

Re: Cardioid capsule with flat response? Primo EM204 or better alternatives?
I like the EM-200 more than the 204. Check out the TSB2590. Is larger and sounds great. I¡¯m not sure you will find a truly flat cardioid capsule. Best Regards, Jules Ryckebusch

Re: Cardioid capsule with flat response? Primo EM204 or better alternatives?
Ok, that have sense. Thanks again ! What about an alternative to Primo EM200/204? I was trying to find some cardioid capsule with such a flat response(or better) but didn't find anything Cheers

Yea, that dotted line is the 180 off axis response Best Regards, Jules Ryckebusch

Dotted graph looks like a frequency response of the back side of the capsule.

Cardioid capsule with flat response? Primo EM204 or better alternatives?
Hi all again! :-) I was looking for a Unidirectional / Cardioid capsule for a DIY mic like Primo?EM204 or EM200 with the latest frequency response. Seems EM204 has a slightly better flat response.
