Depends how you choose to mount the boards. If there are no components on the other side and you mount them on the same surface as the capsules - say on the lid - it seems these wires should be long enough. But it depends also on stand offs you choose. You will determine it when putting it all together. There's no way to know beforehand. And from the photo alone ?

Still, the off-axis response of large diameter capsules will show up in an ORTF setup.

When you flush-mount cardioid capsules, they are no more cardioid, they are more or less omni. But the tuning of cardioid and omni is different. The response may lack LF. You might like it, or not.

A couple of final questions about this.

First- my friend has the mics dismantled (photo attached), the mic capsule is connected to the pcb by two short wires (5cm) and I figure these might have to be extended to allow for mounting on the type of box suggested by @pmfalcman in the thread above. Thoughts and suggestions much appreciated.

When I bought the pair of mics pictured, i also bought the smaller, cheaper "neat worker bee II". The construction is like a smaller bodied version of the mic above, with a slightly smaller capsule. I would like to do something with those capsules also.

2. I spoke to Curt Olson a little while back, by email, most of you probably know Curt's winged and half-sphere stereo arrays:
Curt kindly answered my questions and indicated that cardioid capsules could be used in the half sphere array, albeit with a more directional stereo field. Looking at the mounting of the capsule in the headbasket of the mic, it's centered and a bit away from the edges, and if I understand how the winged and half sphere arrays work, the edge of the capsule needs to be flush or almost flush to the surface- because of the boundary effect?

I'm sorry if these questions are a bit naive, it's hard to find information on these things when your test case is so specific. I'm really keen to understand.?

Hello everyone I found a curious model to build.
I want to use the Primo EM288Z1 as a replacement for the Sanken cos-11d with the Sennheiser 5212 Radio System. I just don't understand, is it necessary to use a preamp or is it enough just to solder the mini jack? Maybe there are some nuances of connection?

Non-expert here, but in case it's useful: I have read somewhere that the 5024 capsule is great for that application, however I believe I read that it may distort if used for loud environments such as airports (jet take offs) or loud factory settings.
I'd like to build a second SASS but for louder situations.
Is there a mic capsule better suited for loud subject matter that one of you folks might suggest, or is the 5024 also usable in louder situations? I made a "Simplest P48" mic to put inside my cajon, and that application may see louder SPL than what you're describing (depends on how close you are to that proverbial jet.) Depending on what you are anticipating, you might get by with the 5024 with a lower-sensitivity circuit? If you really need the capsule to handle some high SPL, there are some options, but I didn't find one with the same SNR as the 5024 that also could handle high SPL. (In my application it didn't matter, because the cajon "kick drum" was blasting loud and the SNR wasn't an issue because I didn't need to capture quieter things. Maybe similar dynamics will factor in your decision.) You might look at JLI-60Axxx capsules. Said Brad Confer from JLI: "The JLI-60Axxx mics are all varieties the same capsule.? The letter after the A (T, Y, etc.) denotes sensitivity of the element.? T would equate to a -44 +/- 3dB.? Check the sensitivity section next to the line drawing for the other suffix values.? The -102 denotes a tighter tolerance of +/-2dB. The exception to this is the JLI-60A-T.? It is a different mic than the above series, but equivalent." I ended up with a JLI-64PCX "linkwitzed modified" and used with the RCA version of the Simplest P48 circuit (with a 47k resistor). (When I tried a 5024 with that RCA/SP48 circuit, it indeed clipped the mic capsule, but "kick drum" like noises can be super loud.) Other low-sensitivity omnidirectional capsules I can find; no idea which of these are good/bad/whatever: MCE-4001???????????????? (should be identical to JLI-60AY) max SPL 115 dB JLI-60AT???????????????? 6mm sens -44dB, 58dB SNR, very flat >20Hz JLI-60AY???????????????? 6mm sens -42dB, 58dB SNR, very flat >20Hz Soberton EM-4530???????? 4.5mm sens -42dB "110 max SPL" 58dB SNR, flat >30Hz Soberton EM-6050???????? 6mm sens -43dB "110 max SPL", 58dB SNR, flat >30Hz CUI CMEJ-0627-42-SP????? 5.5mm sens -42dB "115 acoustic overload", 60dB SNR, flat >100Hz? (330Ohm internal resistor) CUI CMC-6035-130T??????? 6mm sens -42dB "130 acoustic overload", 70dB SNR, flat >100Hz Brad at JLI also said "the highest SPL rated 6mm I have is 110-120, depending on the version." Not sure which capsule he meant there, my notes are incomplete. He also said "if you can use a larger mic, I have a 25mm cap that will do 130dB..." (presumably the JLI-2590A which is a 3-wire.) That capsule had a max SPL of 110dB. If you go straight to a condenser without built in FET you can pad it with a capacitor. I’ve used the 2555B with a 220pF capacitor as a drum mic. It handles a very high SPL. Best Regards,

I think they're looking for a Switchcraft A5M, which is a whole plug - but the insert is what you find. Or copies of that design.
