Re: Blue Baby Bottle SL mic thoughts
Oh, I probably have other narrations around in my backup hard drives with the original capsule.? And, you might be correct with them using a K12 capsule, however, between the Blue and my 3U Audio CM1 mic that does use a K12 the difference was night and day.? Blue played it close to the vest with the SL build and what they used with the mic. I work in the Aviation industry, so my hearing decreases on a yearly basis, so sometimes I'm a bad judge of sound.?
What I tended to noticed, pre-capsule change, was the original was seriously harsh with sibilance to the point of accentuating it.? With the RK47 capsule, that flattened out, which is why it probably sounds "darker" to me.? Like I said though, the low frequencies (Subwoofer from cars or someone stomping up the stairs) creates a strange looking waveform...solid, wide, rounded pattern.? ?I can't hear it during playback, but I see it well enough.?? I would advise not using an RK47 in an Aston Spirit though, they don't mix well. |
Re: Blue Baby Bottle SL mic thoughts
Thank you Bryan for your post! A few thoughts myself. I really wish you had a test with the orginal capsule in the mic. From what I thought the capsule in the baby bottle was the k12 type and I thought the eq was was built around that not the k67? Now I could be wrong though. Camparing my own voice which I don't have a deep voice so I can't compare, here is what I hear. With the baby bottle with the stock capsule in it, It has a dark, more lows in my vocals which I like. The upper mids seem just a little scooped, and the highs has a presense boost. The presense boost I will honestly say I don't care for it but that is easily fixed by eq. The highs are not harsh and it does not have spiky highs like the blue bird did on my voice.?
Bryan, for your modded version with the rk47 it seems to knock out that presense boost in the highs. To me it sounds a little less darker in the lows but that is because I hear the upper mids boosted or much more present which causes the lows to not seem as dark. For me I don't like the extra presense in the upper mids because I have a higher pitch voice. For you it seems to work great! Not too much lows not too much upper mids.? Best Regards, Jesse |
Re: Blue Baby Bottle SL mic thoughts
Bryan so how does it sound with the rk47? I heard it works great for the blue bird since the k12 cap in it has sharp Sss sounds. Baby bottle fixes that issue. I love the sound of both caps. If I ever got another baby bottle for cheap I wouldn't mind putting a rk47 it. Post a sample?

Re: Building a brand new microphone from scratch help
Thanks again both! Jules that ringing or and faraday was what I was talking about! I know the BM 800 she'll if hit on accident can produce that tinny sound on the signal while recording. Other than that though I think I will go again and do my build in a bm 800.
I believe all the parts needed will be low enough noise for making my own!? |
Re: Building a brand new microphone from scratch help
Great question. The body should not affect?noise. With that said, I have had issues where it did. One of the functions of the body is to be a faraday?cage for the capsule and electronics. If the metal connections between the parts are not good electrically, this can be an issue. I have had to sand off paint on the edges of the body cylinders?a few times. Mechanically you don't?want any resonances or ringing. I had one where the cylinder was not even on the edges (exaggerated picture below). It balanced on just two points top and bottom and rung like a bell when tapped. And, of course the bell is right next to a microphone! Clearly audible.?? I have not used a BM-8000 but have seen a few?builds with them. They sounded good., Getting the capsule and wiring in the top part looks like fun... Good luck. Re: Blue Baby Bottle SL mic thoughts
I just tore one of these down a month ago and dropped a RK47 capsule into it.? The switches have posts that have "Beauty" covers on them that come out of the mic body.? They are basically a gold painted plastic with a drilled center that slides over the switch posts, easy to replicate and replace.? Black felt covers the switches and creates a blackout effect a preforms as a dust cover.? The "beauty" covers just pull off to slide the body off the mic.
Stock, the mic performs wonderfully.? I'm still on the fence with the RK47 and the EQ built into the mic. |

One option you might like to consider if this really is important to you? ?If you are building a? 'True Condenser OPA mic' using the circuit in the Instructable, you can gain an extra 2 or 3dB in lowering to absolute noise floor by taking the negative of the 47uF output capacitor from the second op amp (pin 7) directly to ground instead of from the opamp output. Although that will make the audio single sided? - rather than differential? - it won't affect the impedance balance of the output. In reality, these noise figures are - to quote Jules - 'way down in the weeds' anyway, and it will be the capsule noise that dominates, but in the interests of squeezing a couple of extra dB in lower noise floor, you might like to try the grounding option? Here's? an audio clip showing the difference:?? ? ? A 'single sided' output signal, followed by the associated noise floor present. ? Then a second? 'differential' audio signal - adjusted? to the same amplitude - followed by the associated noise floor. About 2 or 3dB worse... Some folk do prefer a fully differential audio signal, and the 'real world' difference in noise floor is minimal -- but you did say you wanted 'ultra quiet'!? :) |

I was looking up specs and to my surprise the old original version had a self noise of 5.5 dB. The SL version has a self noise of 10.8 dB. How did this happen? Because of the switches? Certainly not because of the switches! I see two probable explanations: One is that the measurement method has changed and the first was over optimistic. You must remember that some data are doctored by the mktg dept... The other is that a significant design change happened. The only way to get to that low noise level with a 1 inch diaphragm is the use of an underdamped capsule, which has an intrinsic exaggerated midrange, and thus needs some EQ in the head amp. Although the frequency response is linearized, the transient response is considered inferior by many users.
Is there extra ways to reduce noise down on the mic?In any half-decent mic, noise is governed by the capsule, so I don't thin there is any way of significantly improving the noise performance. Remember that with any mic, half of the performance is in correct placement. |
Re: Building a brand new microphone from scratch help
Thank you Jules!
Do you think that BM 800 body would having negative effect on self noise and or the sound? I have no issues using one of these for the body. I really like the look of the BM 8000. Not sure if the body would fit the circuit. Reminds me of a blue spark microphone. |
Blue Baby Bottle SL mic thoughts
Hi everyone,
I can't believe I got this off eBay for only $73. The guy that sold it knew nothing and never tested it. The switches are missing but I can use a screwdriver. I was the highest bidder! I took a chance that it would work. It does! 100% looks almost brand new. No pop filter or shock mount. I found a pop filter non-branded version that looks the samenfor $10. I have a shock mount already no need to get one of those. The mic IMO sounds amazing! I contacted blue microphone company and they said they don't sell switches or replacement parts. I was actually surprised.? Anyone know where I can replacement switches? I looked everywhere.? I was looking up specs and to my surprise the old original version had a self noise of 5.5 dB. The SL version has a self noise of 10.8 dB. How did this happen? Because of the switches? Is there extra ways to reduce noise down on the mic? I know I may be going a little bit extreme when it comes to self noise. But I want as low self noise as possible! Thanks, Jesse |
Re: Building a brand new microphone from scratch help
Hey Jesse, I have built four of those exact mics and they are really good. Finding donor bodies is the real challenge. I was (and still am a bit) using the "U87" clone bodies from AliExpress. Like BM800 bodies, I feel like every time?I order I get a slight variation. At a minimum I have learned that owning?a M2.5 tap?? really helps. Plus an assortment of small metric screws as well!? For the 5 pin? this will get you 4 of them? You have to disassemble it. but it is the cheapest route.?? I'll be recording a 16 person classical ensemble in Fort Worth with these in a few weeks. Im working?on permission?to post it. At a minimum I can post 15-30 second snippet. Im going?to use these mics as spot mics on the bassist. It is a piece specifically?written for that.? Re: Building a brand new microphone from scratch help
HI again,
So after doing a lot of reading this is what I came up with. I believe this is everything I need as far as the microphone is concern? I still need a donor mic and a 5 pin connect and if anyone knows something cheaper or better than the bm-800 shell? I want to make the dual out microphone. I am choosing the k12 version unless someone can recomend the k47? I want as neutrual as possible as well as low noise. I can do some soldering but I can't say I am the best. Having a chip board complete, I am less likely to mess something up. The next build, I will take all the parts and solder each component on the board. That will be my next challenge after this.? Does anyone know the weighted dba for the circuit / capsule together? I read on the link?True Condenser OPA Mics : 6 Steps (with Pictures) - Instructables that the mic builds are about 8dba to 9 dba of self noise. However I am not sure if that was with the premade circuits or with soldering each component myself.? Thanks Again everyone for your help, Jesse |
Re: Dual capsule k12 on one side and k47 on other side idea
"The rear side of every Braunmuhl-Weber style (dual diaphragm, large diameter) capsule, including the K47 and CK12 styles, is part of the sound of the front side. If you were to change the rear side of the CK-12 to anything else, the front wouldn¡¯t sound like a CK-12 any more. The same applies to the K47. "
One of the consequences would be that the patterns that combine both capsules would not behave as expected, with lobes happenning where the capsules have different response. I'm not sure of the severity of the consequences, but it needs to be considered. |
Re: Recommended operating voltage for TSB 2555
Some great info! I didn't realize that these capsules are fetless and thus don't need the polarization like I was using on the EM272s. I don't have any OPA164x opamps on hand. How would I modify a schoeps circuit to work with the capsules? Also probably a silly question, but like the em272's can these TSB2555's be placed in parallel to improve the SNR?
