John,?
I understand not Running the machine with these safety devices disconnected.?
?
I’ve actually plugged the motors from the control box.?
?
I have tried what you have suggested relative to reading the voltages on the direction pins for the different axis, and I am getting no voltage change on the PMDX board itself when a jog the axis. ? ?
?
I have the manual for the PMDX Board that shows all of the connections to my Gecko drivers., See attached photo.?
?
I just got an input suggesting that maybe the voltage, 3.5 V is too low to activate the relays within the board.?
?
If that’s the case, that could be my problem. ?
?
Thanks for your input,
Chuck

?Chuck, you report 3.5v output on the || port. While well within the IEEE specs, that may be a marginal voltage, and could explain why it only works intermittently. If your voltage is marginal, temperature changes are enough to shift the switching
threshold. || port voltages have historically been a problem with Mach, and were notorious with laptops.
It would be a little work, but you could test this with a breakout board. Just put a 1K pull-up resistor attached to a 5v rail on each output port.

Hi Chuck, I’m not suggesting try a jumper and then try running CNC.? I’m suggesting disable the charge pump and don’t reconnect it.? Whatever is required to do that.? Then start tracing signals again.? Click the big red button and make sure your hard wired ESTOP is not active.? Verify that with the LEDs on the PMDX board and the MACH software. Now JOG X in say + direction.? Look at the Parallel port DIR_X output at the PMDX input side.? Then look at the signal out to the X Axis GECKO DIR pin. Now JOF X in the – direction and see if the outputs change.? Without a scope it’s hard to see if the step pulses are making it through. ? Have you created a sketch or drawing of how your system is wired?? For example attached is the drawing I did for my ELS to Gingery lathe connection.? My ELS duplicates the Parallel port and I’ve had it running with both MACH2 and MACH3 by just moving the cable from the ELS to the PC. ? Also attached is an older version of my CNC Mill conversion with the PMDX-126.? Just to give you an idea of how to put something together that you can then share to help with diagnostics. ? Doesn’t have to be fancy done with CAD but at least something drawing with ruler lines etc.? ie. Neat and tidy.? That might even give you the clue as to what might be happening. John ? ?

“?the thing that is really strange is if I go into the diagnostics and I click on the Mist i’ll put number four lights up. See attached photos.”

Under MACH3 the config screen shows which port is Port #1 and the port address. ?
? That should match what you see in Device Manager (here from a WIN-XP system)
? Another thing to check is start MACH3 with the MACH3 Loader program instead of an ICON marked MACH3.? You’ll get this sort of dialog then.
If something other than normal printer port operation is selected then that needs to be restored to the printer port. ? ? ?

?
Thank you for the detailed response,?
I will do what you suggest and report back to the group.?
?There can be random errors introduced into hard disks files that some people attribute to cosmic rays. I know this sounds a bit conspiracy theory and though it is rare it does happen. Also hard disks do
not last forever. So there is a possibility that one of your Mach3 files has been corrupted and so it may be worth renaming the current Mach3 folder something like oldmach3 and reinstalling Mach3 to see if that gets it to work again. If it does then it should
be a case of copying over the configuration file, license file and part files and carrying on. If it does not work you can delete the new Mach3 folder and put the name of the oldmach3 folder back to Mach3. I personally keep a backup copy of my Mach3 folder
on a separate machine and a USB stick just so I can replace it if I suspect the working one has been corrupted. If the parallel port is the fault then you may have to go down the route of either a USB port controller or a network port controller. I use laptops
without issues having set them up to never shut down when external power is on, I think it was just a case of setting them up to act like a desktop.

They don't work, Mach3 needs a real parallel port.
Those adapters screw up the timing for the stepper pulses, I guess they'd work ok for simple stuff like turning air or coolant on & off.? Not sure I'd trust it for limit switches (again, timing problems).

You could try one of these, not sure if Mach3 will recognize it though....
