Re: The "LIST"

Art

Hi: John

I will do this soon. I have a few things to do to the lockdown to correct
some quirks, then I will lock it down hard and puibish a new list. I will
then prioritize the list and modify according to the responces.

Thanks,
Art

Hi Art,
After all the posting and events that have occured since your last
posting of "The LIST", maybe now would be a good time to again
post "The LIST" and give everyone an idea of where you are at now
and where you are going as relating to priorities for future fixes
and enhancements.

Thanks much,
John

Thanks Mark:

I'll fix it up.

You can get the motor tuning numbers from a macro and DRO them, applying
formulas to get them to InchesPerSecond and such, but it would be a bit of
work. Still on the list, but a bit lower down...

I mentioned this a while back but it must of slipped your mind.
IJ Abs Led on Diagnostics screen is round the wrong way,It shows
absolute when inc is set in logic tab and vice versa.Just thought
you may want to correct it for lockdown version.

Are you getting anywhere with the motor tuning dro's i mentioned or
is it very low on list?.

Mark

No, you can open your screen, select your buttons and select Copy in the
edit menu, then open the real screens and select paste. (Or visa versa..)

When you say copy the buttons over do you mean just create a new button and add the text that I used?
I see that as the only way to do it.

Thanks

Joystick

Matthew A. Morgano

Hi,

I am interested to know if I can interface a regular windows joystick with
mach 2. Is there a particular brand or something I should look for in
buying one?

Thanks,

Matt

Thanks,
George: You need to decide what conditions will cause an E-stop and
what signals you have available when that condition occurs. Remember
that any signal to the parallel port on the PC has to be ground
referenced to the PC. If the signal is a fault signal from a motor
drive you have to make sure it's ground is common with PC (Step and
DIrection) ground and if not you need to consider using an
optoisolator or relay as isolation.

In a lot of the systems the e-stop signal back to MACH2 is more of
a "information" signal than an action signal. It is good practice to
employ a hard wired e-stop system that is independent of computer
control. It is common to wire things like hard limit switches and
front panel mushroom buttons to external electronics that shut off
the power to the motors and sending a signal to MACH2 that a manual e-
stop has occurred.

My big red button(s) and table limits are all wired in series in a
normally closed condition (contacts closed when switch not activated)
and that is used to hold in the coil voltage on a small 12VDC 4PDT
relay. Any activation and the relay releases. One set of the small
relay contacts drives the coil of the large contactor for DC supply
to all my motors, another set uses a normally closed pair that are
open during normal run conditons to feedback to the parallel port
(computer e-stop) and a third drives a big red lamp on the front
panel. The relay contacts isolate the PC from any outside
voltages/noise. Since my big contactor has DPDT contacts I have a
low ohm power resistor that gets clamped across the motors when the
DC is interrupted acting as a dynamic brake.

MACH 2 will let you monitor any parallel port input pin as e-stop.

Still confused on upgrade and keeping changes

Hi,

I still have not figured out how to upgrade to another version and
keep the buttons I create and also get the new features added to
Mach2.
I have tried using my old set file and also have tried using my old
xml file. Also have tried using both.
I can keep the buttons I create but I do not get the added features
that have been added to Mach2.

Is it possible move to version 4 lets say and import just the
buttons that I have made? Or is it easier to just remake those
buttons in the new version.

Thanks

Gary

Re: keygrabber problem with user key 21 and 22 with same code.

Hi Olivier,

Oops, sorry about that. I will change key 21 to something else.

If a key works on one screen it should work on another. I cannot think of anything that would cause a key to stop working on one particular screen. Very strange.

I don't know yet if my problem come from here because it's very strange. A macro don't work only on 1 screen (it's a button on the P screen).
She does work on another test machine on all screens but without keygrabber.

ESTOP

How can I interface an ESTOP external switch to mach2. I have the
PMDX.com parallel interface board and it does not seem to have an
estop connection? Can I specify in mach2 which parallel port pins
will be the estop (such as in the case of using a 2nd parallel port)?

Thanks,

2 parallel port

I noticed that using only 1 parallel port does not have enough pins
to handle all the limit/home switches for 3 axis and the solution is
to combine some limit switches. However, I found out that mach2
allows the use of 2 parallel ports which should provide more pins for
limit switches. A second parallel port requires me to buy a PCI
parallel port card and an additional parallel port break out board
(controller) like the www.pmdx.com. Can someone verify before I
purchase these items that the second parallel port for mach2 can be
used for additional limit/home switches?

Thanks,

Re: one limit switch or two??

thomas, there is no advantages to use 2 limit switches i think. mach2 don't
use the limit + or limit - information separatly. The only thing a limit do
is Estop mach2, and eventually homing for combined home limit switch
strategy (i don't like it). It's better to use a mechanical ramp who will
trig the limit switch at the end of each axis limit, and to keep your money
for a second switche by axis for referencing. Like this you will get
software limits working, and you can have your ramps limit switch set just
after this software limits, with hardware power off on them in case your
servos or mach2 become made and run away.

if you have 1 reference switch by axis, you can reference all your axis at
the same time, and you can connect in serial all your limit switches to take
only 1 mach2 input. This make a total of 4 input for 3 axis. It's the better
setup, not expensive (2 switches per axis, 1 dual ramp for limits and 1 half
lenght ramp for reference by axis), save mach2 inputs, and give you a true
referencing possibility with setable software limits. this give you too the
possibility to put the reference switch in the middle of each axis, this is
really a time keeper strategy, because you will not need to go at 0 machine
position to reference.

This is well explained in the John's manual, but this strategy is not often
choosed by beginners certainly because when they see their machine joging
with mach2, they forget they could keep a lot of time with a true separate
referencing, software limits, and hardware limit switches for urgency power
off.

one limit switch or two??

Thomas Powell

Using Campbell's breakout board what are the advantages and disadvantages to
using one or two limit switches per axis?

I will be using the Automation Direct proximity switches.

Re: Driver for Servo and I/O board

I am not familiar with the Siemens board Henry is using, but it might
be possible to adapt the Galil board to Mach2. There is a function on
the DMC that allows an axis to follow input from an auxiliary encoder.
The aux encoder inputs can be configured to accept S/D signals.

Since the four axis board (DMC-1040) has eight encoder inputs and its
own cpu it should be possible to obtain true closed loop control under
Mach2. All that would be needed is some means of recovering actual
encoder positions from the DMC in the event of an estop (the DMC
retains register integrity during motor off conditions).

Sorry, but it would be just about impossible. The Mach2 driver is
extremely tight, Servo-To-Go people took a look at the problem and

Hi Robin,

Yes. If it comes with a keyboard profiler then it can be used directly with Mach2. If not it can be used with my KeyGrabber profiler.
