Yeah, it's as I said, decision were made 20 years ago (20!!) that

Actually D-STAR was originally developed in the late 90s, IIRC.? And
codec choices were limited back then - LPC-10 worked at 2400 bps, there
was code in the public domain, but it sounded AWFUL! :D

We (any DV flavor) just need to make sure there are enough gateways
around to make certain that all the flavors can talk to one another.
We can call them HoJo Hubs because of the 28 flavors of DV they serve.
Yes, I run a few gateways to multimode reflectors. :)

Hey ... speaking of CODEC2 ... there is also FreeDV which is wrapped
around CODEC2 ... how does that fit in with M17?
FreeDV uses lower bitrate variants of Codec2, mostly 700 bps.? Also, in
its current form, it's not built to be linked via the Internet, largely
because of its primary purpose as a DV alternative to SSB on the HF
bands.? Of course, being open source, anyone can change FreeDV to do new
things, if one has the coding skills. :)? Obviously, there's also no
protocol defined for FreeDV over IP or FreeDV reflectors.
