Re: Friday Five September 27
1.? Should prostitution be legalized? Why not? Tax it, require licensing and a health card. Unlike many?recreational activities, it is easily understood?and utilized. We could include?more education?on the impact and consequences of sexual focus.? 2.? Should all illicit drugs be legalized? ?I?am wary of broad brushes, so the qualifier "all" has me hesitating. I imagine many?could be without ending civilization. although some?may be too ready manipulated or unhealthy to unleash without effective safeguards. 3.? Should child marriage be legalized? Again, very broad. Since children are often ill-prepared?to determine their?future consequences due to factors beyond?their control, such as brain development, I tend to disapprove of this?idea. Ifd we consider children to be property of their families, then adults could decide for those children. If we consider children to be nurtured future adults, then we would want to respect those future adults by protecting those futures. I am in that second camp more than the first and so feel we should postone?long-term decisions like marriage until the children can maturely participate in?that?process. 4.? Should any behaviour between consenting adults be legalized? Again, "any." I am fine with allowing any behavior I do not have to pay for. In the long run, adults often do what they want to anyway, even if the?behaviors need to be concealed.
5.? How should the age of consent be determined? By the ability to realistically understand the consequences? Executive function maturity, maturity testing, social unwillingness?to further support, the needs of the tribe for participation on an adult level...I think the answer to this one depends upon social survival?circumstances and the accepted cultural?morality.

? 1.? Should prostitution be legalized?
Decriminaized yes - most things should not be subject to statute 2.? Should all illicit drugs be leglaized? Same answer except that people who do stupid things should not be supported by public funds 3.? Should child marriage be legalized? With strict lower limits - anymore what is a child.? But there should be strict limits on age differences - maybe no more than ten percent of the younger persons age. 4.? Should any behaviour between consenting adults be legalized? Yes with the limitation that public funds are not used to remediate their actions. 5.? How should the age of consent be determined? That is the question o the century - maybe the idea needs to be tossed and individuals allowed to make their own decisions - again without recourse to public funds when bad things happen |

1.? Should prostitution be legalized? It is legal in this town, and has been for 150 years.? I don't see why it should be illegal, all the excuses for criminalizing it go away when it's legalized, although it should be controlled, such as no streetwalking, licensing for those offering services, medical checkups, and condoms required, and no one under 18. ? One of the local brothels was shut down by the city when a woman complained that her ex-husband, who had partial custody, brought their three year old daughter inside and had her do a pole dance.? The father filmed that cute act on his phone, the ex wife saw it, and turned him in. 2.? Should all illicit drugs be legalized? If they are legalized, they're not illicit.? Some drugs should be controlled, especially if they are highly addictive.? Anyone caught driving under the influence should lose their license. 3.? Should child marriage be legalized? No.? Perhaps sixteen should be the lower limit. 4.? Should any behaviour between consenting adults be legalized? Not any behavior.? Drag racing and drunk driving come to mind.? As an aside, the Cannonball Run came through Elko today.? It wasn't publicized, but they stopped for lunch at a famous restaurant and I happened to be driving by.? They were all consenting adults, but some of those cars would go 200 mph, and that's too fast, even on I-80 across the Bonneville Salt Flats, where they would be about an hour from Elko. 5.? How should the age of consent be determined? Post puberty plus a couple of years for girls as long as the boy isn't ?more than 2 years older.? After 18, anything goes. |

Graduation from high school should require a number of things - and etiquiette basics are a good place to start. Marvin "2.? Should Generation Z hire be required to take etiquette training as part of their job orientation? ?
Marvin: "They should take it before they get out of high school."
?
I wonder if they should wait that long.? I watched one the other day who was completely clueless, and though the parent gave timely feedback, perhaps learning manners takes feedback from other adults and in a group setting where kids can learn from one another.? I still remember a grade school teacher who made all the boys wait to let all the girls leave the classroom first.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýIf there are going to be tariffs this is a good basis for them. It shouldn't be the only basis, though. I have not encountered any Gen Z persons who would need that. There aren't very many of those, so I would think they are being deported already. They are fine being in jail until they can be deported. I have not tried any Chipotle food, so I don't know whether I would eat their guacamole no matter how it's made. I have an antique copy of Black Beauty. Aloha, Celeste Rogers |

1.? Should import tariffs be based on the producers burning of fossil fuels to manufacture products?
It would serve as a tax on carbon dioxide emissions but as other have said - how to determine the amount. 2.? Should Generation Z hire be required to take etiquette training as part of their job orientation? They should take it before they get out of high school. 3.? Should criminally convicted illegal immigrants to subject to immediate deportation? Depends on the crime - non violent misdimeoners might be grounds to require a longer wait for citizenship but felonies should definitely be grounds - unless they are violent in which case the felons should be sent to Florence Colorado 4.? Would you eat guacamole made by a robot at Chipotle? Certainly - probably clearer than what is prepared by hand. 5.? What is the oldest book you have? Non fiction - a 1929 almanac. Fiction a collection or Mark Twain ? ? --You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "M-Scholars and Scribes" group. 1.? Should import tariffs be based on the producers burning of fossil fuels to manufacture products? Seems like import tariffs are already based on very complicated criteria, including special interests from behind the scenes. I do not see this working as the fuel consumption reporting would simply be smudged?to support the distribution of money affected. It would make a statement and create a new branch to the graft and bribery industries, but probably would not curtail fossil fuels use by very much. 2.? Should Generation Z hire be required to take etiquette training as part of their job orientation? I feel this is a Gen Z slight, but I am not familiar with the backstory. I can only say it applies if the prospective employer?wishes?it. I will save the Googling on this fascinating topic for another day... 3.? Should criminally convicted illegal immigrants be subject to immediate deportation? I dislike broad brushes on principle, but it seems reasonable enough on the surface. I feel this is a safe bet on my part?because, considering that we are specifying?"illegal", should they not all be deported anyway?? 4.? Would you eat guacamole made by a robot at Chipotle? Since this question is probably more oriented at robotic food prep than the desirability of eating at Chipotle or that establishment's?guacamole, I will just say that I am fine with robots preparing food. Even those foods I am not drawn to.
5.? What is the oldest book you have? I have a Kindle edition of The Art of War in English. It was written around the 5th century BC. |

1.? Is Friday the thirteenth an unlucky day? No, but there is some confirmation bias that probably supports that myth, same as St. Crispin's day? 2.? What was the most memorable one day of your life? Grad school graduation day in June,?1985. ? 3.? What was the one most memorable hour of your life? Getting married. 4.? What was the most memorable one minute of your life? Skiing over the headwall at Tuckerman Ravine. 5.? Do you suffer from Trump Derangement Syndrome or Harris Derangement Syndrome? The latter.? I can't imagine how bad things will be if she is elected president, though if Republicans hold onto either house in Congress, (and they will probably gain the Senate but lose the House) it will blunt damaging legislation, but Harris will issue a bunch of goofy executive orders and make a bunch of foolish appointments. ? Re: Friday Five September 13
1.? Is Friday the thirteenth an unlucky day? What is "an unlucky day?" I suspect a 24-hour period with a demonstrably greater volume of undesired happenings? Yet this is all subjective, the very concept of happening?being something built?uniquely by each human mind (what is included in an "happening"? What is excluded?), so before we even get to "unlucky", we are stymied! No. 2.? What was the most memorable one day of your life? I remember many, but none very well. I do remember a moment when I was very young, solidly preadolescent, and I badly wanted to be a cowboy?(after a few movies?on the topic!) I suddenly had an epiphany?and decided I was?a cowboy even though it might be awhile?before I get a six-gun and a horse. Or even a hat, as we were very?poor. I felt much better after that realization, at p[eace with my new path. As an older adult, I have a six-gun but have only ridden a flesh horse twice! Iron horses I have many more miles under my backside, though. 3.? What was the one most memorable hour of your life? If the next question is about minutes...damn. I peeked ahead. I cannot really say. I do not much hang onto such. Probably something from boot camp as I have flashes of moments there, like night maneuvers and marching practice?(short inseam.) 4.? What was the most memorable one minute of your life? This brought a recall of climbing out of a river?gorge. I reached a point maybe ten feet below the top and ran into a smooth clay incline formed from years of water runoff from the road above. Reversing was not an option, I discovered, as the rocks beneath were not easily climbed and my body was tired. I pushed up onto the clay and lay flat, realizing I was doomed?to slide down and out over the end of the ramp like a drop of water. Then I spread my body across the greatest area I could, flat to the ground, and inched?my way to the top because there was no real choice other than probably death. I did not die that day and I surmounted the gorge. 5.? Do you suffer from Trump Derangement Syndrome or Harris Derangement Syndrome? Politics is continuing to annoy me. My behaviors do not, in my opinion, closely resemble either of our wanna be fearless leaders'. I really think we should rethink the criteria for presidential?candidates and consider a few new stipulations. Having said that, I would not personally take the job and so perhaps this is one of those positions needing to make the best out of the available volunteer labor pool. |
