Entering HIP Star Coordinates Using Hand Controller?
Hi Jim i'm not in front of my hand controller right now but i'm fairly certain that's not a catalog that comes standard in the HC.? At least, not the full catalog. There are HIP stars in the G2V catalog you can upload your own catalogs to the HC, you can find that info on There is also a resource points to that has more catalogs you can add and points to the HIP catalog however, if you are interested in those kinds of things, it may be easier to use a planetarium program that already has all those and much more On Sat, Jan 16, 2021 at 2:07 PM Jim Waters <jimwaters@...> wrote: Using the HC how can I enter HIP star coordinates - such as HIP 27446? --

开云体育Choose the correct catalog from the HC.. The enter the 6 digit ID.. i.e. if you want HIP 1, you would enter 000001.. The target has to be mag 7 or brighter or it isn’t in the catalog.. ? Same works for the SAO.. ? When I redid my SD card when I first got my (used) G11, I saved a copy of everything on the card to this laptop, and I often refer to the catalogs (with any text editor) to see what the syntax is / what is or is not in a given catalog, etc.. ? I was looking for a hip designation and finding a stellar rosetta stone that gives hip, sao, hd, especially strueve and older, is a pain. I had one site that I've since lost the link to that did that. So if the HC has it but under a different system, you're SOL finding it. So, do you have such a site??? Chuck -----Original Message-----

I was looking for a strueve reference and it's not on stellarium. I was looking for a website that cross referenced all or most. Sometimes you find the reference, sometimes not. Hi all, I created a HIP catalog in GUC (gemini) format, it seems to work so here's the file: ? NOTE: this is not an officially supported catalog, so use at your own risk (there's no risk of damaging anything, worst that happens is it doesn't work or slews to the wrong place) to use it you need to upload this to the Gemini SD card in a directory HCFirmware (you will likely need to create that directorY0 then you use the hand controller to upload it to the hand controller database Menu->HC->SD Card->Upload Files (if you uploaded it successfully to the Gemini SD Card and put it in the HCFirmware folder, it will show up there) It will then show up as a catalog option in the GOTO menu for some reason it shows as "HIP (with starting quote) so you just type in the number after that. It should show "HIP27446 for example notes:? It takes a super long time to upload to the HC (although uploading to Gemini is super fast).?I'm talking like 15 minutes or more. It's about 10x bigger than any other catalog on the HC and has about 117k entries.? I could only use HIP1 data and not HIP2. HIP2 coordinates were only available in decimal and i couldn't find an easy way to mass convert to HH:MM:SS I wanted to see how hard it would be to create a custom catalog in the format Gemini expects, and it's? pretty straightforward. Finding the data and getting into the right format is the hardest part See what you think Brian On Sat, Jan 16, 2021 at 8:13 PM crocco1250 via <crocco1250=[email protected]> wrote: Ken --

开云体育Sorry Chuck, somehow I missed this.. ? Someone mentioned Simbad / Vizier.. I use that when nothing else works.. Most planetarium programs allow you to switch catalogs.. You need some idea of where it *should* be, i.e. dimmest to brightest.. UCAC4 to HIP to SAO.. So an SAO star is much less likely to also be in the HIP catalog – roughly speaking.. Similarly, a brighter UCAC4 star might have a HIP ID.. The Brighter HIP stars would likely have an SAO number.. A limited number of stars have a single unique ID.. Roughly.. ? But my first method – besides switching catalogs in a planetarium program - of cross identification is a Google search.. It usually comes right up for something as bright as a HIP star.. ? I have an plan of creating a set of *.guc files to solve this, but I have no idea how to automate the process of creating them so it’ll take me begging my buddy to do it for me (don’t expect it anytime soon).. I already have asked some questions regarding this and if and when I get it “my way”, I’ll certainly share.. ? Derek ? From:

When using stellarium, I was looking for a double star system mentioned in a mag using the strueve designation. No luck. I was trying to use sinbad under android and couldn't print the results. My old link to a stellar catalog has disappeared and that catalog had a cross reference. So, when magnitudes get below a certain point, your stuck with hip as everyone uses it but the cross-references to older designations are harder to find. I was wondering if there was an on line cross reference list but, after hours spent searching, I couldn't find one. So, if you can provide some help, that's great. Chuck -----Original Message-----

开云体育That’s where Simbad / Vizier comes in.. I forget which is which, but in one you enter the ID and one of the sections it returns is “other identifiers”.. and the other you can search a given – ie user defined – distance from an RA / Dec and it will give you all targets.. which you then can cross reference by ID.. ? Still.. You should be able to Google the Struve ID and get other ID’s.. ? I don’t even own a printer.. A Pen and scratch paper and a walk to the scope works.. ? Entering “Star Catalog Cross Reference” into Google just now returns..
? See the Second entry.. ? And for double stars, #3.. etc.. ? Derek ? From:

Hi all I have a new improved version of the HIP star catalog that i've loaded into the files section here - based on HIP2 and is in Gemini (.guc) format. this is 117,000+ stars - has notes section included (not very interesting but does make note of star color) - so far i've been able to load it into my hand controller and use it successfully - i fixed the quote problem so now you just enter HIP1234 unstead if?"HIP1234 loading takes about 30 minutes?to the HC These are J2000 coordinates so have J2000 checked (which it is by default) Brian On Mon, Jan 18, 2021 at 10:58 AM crocco1250 via <crocco1250=[email protected]> wrote: Derek --

Yes! It worked. There's a little action button that you have to select to display the html list and its default is a list that you can't download in Android.
