But.. all you will ever need is SIMBAD, as was pointed out before..

When using stellarium, I was looking for a double star system mentioned in a mag using the strueve designation. No luck. I was trying to use sinbad under android and couldn't print the results. My old link to a stellar catalog has disappeared and that catalog had a cross reference. So, when magnitudes get below a certain point, your stuck with hip as everyone uses it but the cross-references to older designations are harder to find. I was wondering if there was an on line cross reference list but, after hours spent searching, I couldn't find one. So, if you can provide some help, that's great.

Sorry Chuck, somehow I missed this..

?

Someone mentioned Simbad / Vizier.. I use that when nothing else works.. Most planetarium programs allow you to switch catalogs.. You need some idea of where it *should* be, i.e. dimmest to brightest.. UCAC4 to HIP to SAO.. So an SAO star is much less likely to also be in the HIP catalog ¨C roughly speaking.. Similarly, a brighter UCAC4 star might have a HIP ID.. The Brighter HIP stars would likely have an SAO number.. A limited number of stars have a single unique ID.. Roughly..

?

But my first method ¨C besides switching catalogs in a planetarium program - of cross identification is a Google search.. It usually comes right up for something as bright as a HIP star..

?

I have an plan of creating a set of *.guc files to solve this, but I have no idea how to automate the process of creating them so it¡¯ll take me begging my buddy to do it for me (don¡¯t expect it anytime soon).. I already have asked some questions regarding this and if and when I get it ¡°my way¡±, I¡¯ll certainly share..

I was looking for a hip designation and finding a stellar rosetta stone that gives hip, sao, hd, especially strueve and older, is a pain. I had one site that I've since lost the link to that did that. So if the HC has it but under a different system, you're SOL finding it. So, do you have such a site???

And of course when I looked, there is no HIP catalog, so you have to find the SAO ID.. Then my answer makes sense..

Using the HC how can I enter HIP star coordinates - such as HIP 27446?
