Great mount
Hi hi everyone, I've had my G11 for over 8 months now and I've used it a lot, especially this summer. Other than the bump I had a month or so ago it has exceeded all of my expectations. I've taken hundreds of hours of photos with very few lost because of tracking problems. I can't imagine a better more reliable mount. When I bought it, I was thinking of spending thousands more for another mount. I'm really glad I didn't. Rob |
Rob, I feel exactly the same way about my G11 too. It performs flawlessly as my astophotography platform. John On Monday, September 18, 2017 12:47 PM, "sactowriter@... [Losmandy_users]" wrote:

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHaha, I think my current one, the last in a long series of newer & newer G8's, G-11's, has been running for at least 3-4 years now with barely a hiccup electro-mechanically and pretty darn good for the Gemini2OS also! A big help has been one Ovision, 2 Maxon's, a nicer cradle and either of AstroPhysics portable piers.? Looking forward to tucking the motors and the 2piece head, one day... Ross |
Rob, I've had pretty good results with a virtually new Losmandy G11 which sat in a closet for 14 years before I bought it a couple years ago. From a 15 year old virtually new G11 #492 digital drive system to a current spec Losmandy G11G and a few iterations in between I have had nothing but pleasure in learning and using Losmandy's mounts. I got reacquainted with Scott who wa an LAAS member back in the day and have made new friends at Losmandy (I live nearby) and made other friends of local Losmandy owners and a few in online groups. It's a fine and creative group with a lot of what people used to call American know how.? I'm pretty happy to know that American know how still exists out there if you look in the right places. Made in America can still mean exceptionally good products and that products can be made and sold at competitive prices. I say this knowing that you can buy mounts from American companies that are made in China with similar features at similar price points. But having owned and reworked more than a few of these Chinese made mounts I know there is no comparison in the build quality or support of these products.? Ross, the newly redesigned Losmandy OPW design is probably now just as good as the Ovision OPW it's certainly more consistently good than the Ovison OPW has been if the many reports from Ovision owners having to send their Ovision OPW back for replacement is any indication. My G11G as the tucked motors and RAEXK installed and yes, you do want these new features along with the new custom cases for each half of the mount head Losmandy will be selling soon. You will have two custom hard cases each with a hard mount in the case to clamp the RA or DEC half directly into the case, each weighing about 25lbs,. The counterweight and CW shaft case will be the heaviest part to transport. No more motors hanging out requiring extra deep cases to safely transport the mount!? I love a good feel good post! Hi Keith,
Hmm, this is a difficult question to answer. From a mechanical POV the new Losmandy OPW design appears to be virtually identical to the old design in terms of worm bearing block alignment, it is for all intents and purposes functionally identical. The only difference is that the gearbox is attached directly to the plate under the mount's large worm wheel instead of floating with the OPW as in the original Losmandy OPW design.? What this means is that as the new OPW worm mesh/gap is adjusted there is a slight misalignment introduced between the gearbox output shaft axis and the worm gear axis. Scott will tell you this is not important as the Oldham couplers allow for this very slight misalignment between the worm and gearbox shafts. But the Oldham is not?homokinetic, if there is misalignment between the shafts there will also be velocity changes introduced. This is where the original Losmandy OPW design was a better design, it had no misalignment so there was a smoother transmission of movement between the gearbox and worm gear. That said the velocity differences are very small and may not be detectable.? Chip ?? ?? ? |
