A slight detour from the topic, but as I'm trying to get to know the full landscape:There is the Explore Scientific GoTo system which can be retrofitted to G-11 mounts. It uses stepper motors that are not noisy. The best information about this that I have found is at: David |
Re: Just purchased GM811GHD
Thank you all for the help! I just got my GM811GHD!?
I bought a large rolling toolbox from home depot and bought some foam online to make a cheap but protective case such as the pelican cases (not airline safe though). I'll use this for the RA and DEC axis' and any smaller accessories. I got an Orion padded telescope case to carry the HD tripod around (that thing is a beast). Luckily my apartments have an elevator so rolling/carrying these down won't be too difficult.? I also just purchased a QHY Polemaster that will come in the mail this week.? Still deciding on if I need to get the RA extension yet. Might try to machine something myself to do something similar.? Next will be to figure out how to DIY a portable 12V battery pack? I'll probably make a more detailed post on how I DIY'd my carrying solution for the mount + tripod. Can't wait for clear skies to try everything out! |
Re: G11 cable management
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýMagnus,The stepper motors are the original motors used on the G11, they do not support Go To, just tracking and guiding. I replaced them only because I wanted to remotely control my telescope. They are still available as an option on the web site. 'G11 S - G11 Mount with Digital Control 492 System. Stepper Motors outboard of mount. Standard 2 Point Worm Gear Block Assembly.' Regards Paul

Re: G11 cable management
Hi!
A slight detour from the topic, but as I'm trying to get to know the full landscape: - what stepper motors? I see that there are stepper motors sold by Losmandy, and another set for using with a different GoTo system in Germany. But what are the Losmandy stepper motors for? I recently upgraded my servo motors to new high torque servo motors.. should I have had steppers instead? Magnus |
Re: G11 cable management
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýChip,It¡¯s funny you should say that, the first thing that people comment about when they see my tucked in motors is ¡°they are a lot quieter than normal¡±. I hadn¡¯t noticed because I moved from the stepper motors, which are effectively silent. Regards Paul

Re: finderscope bracket
I have a Losmandy polar scope on my smaller Losmandy the GM8 and it works very well for visual use but if imaging it's not good enough without additional work using the drift method, SharpCap or PHD2 and at that point why bother? I've tested and used?new Sharpcap 3.1, PHD2 and PoleMaster and IMO the dedicated PoleMaster is very accurate and faster. I much prefer it over the other methods for the simpler computer guided visual alignment method used.? YMMV but I just go with the now (early drivers had issues under Win10) painless PoleMaster.? Re: G11 cable management
Hi Dale,
I will say this about the tucked motors, they made my standard G11 with Gemini 2-mini and latest high-torque motors a lot narrower and surprisingly a lot quieter for some reason. Combined with the RAEXK the need to do a meridian flip to prevent a mount strike happens a lot less often while imaging. For this it was WELL WORTH the money IMO and I'm really cheap which is why I bought a used G11 in the first place!? I need to make a distinction here: I'm cheap which is not the same as being tight. Cheap people just want to get a good deal without hurting or limiting the potential of their gear. Cheap people know how to shop and identify the best possible gear and what a good deal is on it and then buy it. Tight people just keep buying inexpensive gear and suffer, endlessly upgrading until they become - cheap people!? Been there, done that! Chip ? ? |
Re: Polar Scope
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI'll add my two cents on polemaster.? For those of us having arthritic issues with bending down and having your neck at an odd angle, the polemaster is the best ever.? One downer is having to use a laptop to polar align.? If you are in a group and people are trying to get their night vision going, a blazing laptop screen can be irritating.?? Subject: [Losmandy_users] Re: Polar Scope ? I would have to agree with Brian. When you get the polar scope you have to align it. That gets frustrating. I had one I know. I went to the Polemaster for like $10 more and found it's a whole lot easier. Just my 2 cents. ? Greg S.

Re: Polar Scope
if you're looking to save money, you might try the new polar align assist built in to PHD2, the latest dev release. it's free B On Wed, Dec 6, 2017 at 1:52 PM, adamsll@... [Losmandy_users] <Losmandy_users@...> wrote:

Re: G11 cable management
Hi Chip,
Thank you for all that information about the temperature and it's effects on the worm-gear drive train.? I think? I'm just? sensitve to having to spend money on a mount that's only 18 months old.?? Maybe I can coordinate a trip down the coast with getting it scheduled with Scott.? The tucked motors and new OPW on the DEC axis are attractive to me. Thanks again. Dale |

I also bought the Polemaster. It works and it is

much more comfortable to look at the computer screen than to crouch down low behind the mount -- which, unless you live close to the equator you will have to do -- and the further north you are, the more uncomfortable the position is. If you already have an astro camera (not a DSLR) there is also a method called Sharpcap that I have seen highly praised, though I havent tried it. It also uses software and is apparently even simpler than Polemaster: David At 14:55 06-12-17, tensor74@... [Losmandy_users] wrote:
