I don't fuss about figures. Instead I judge by my results, and I'm doing great there.
There are far to many variables between us and our objects to debate the variances of graphs and charts.
I recently replaced PHD2, because mine became corrupted. It was Easy-Peasy, done at the mount over WiFi.
It practically set itself up.

Tonight I have up to 95% clouds predicted.
Just peachy!

I think that is a point worth clarifying ie., 3 arc seconds or 3 pixels. The number PHD2 reports in parenthesis is the guiding in arc seconds and the more meaningful number. the 0.7-0.8 RMS number I mentioned is in arc seconds. Yes, 0.3" would be an amazing number!

Just to be clear, this is 0.3" and not 0.3 pixels?? If so, wow.? The best I've ever achieved is 0.6", though usually average 0.7-0.8" (of course my skies aren't your skies).

Re: Another night of Stellar Performance

By focusing on balance, cable management, etc. I can get around 0.7-0.8RMS on good days - meaning no wind. I'd like to improve that even more if I can. I still need to post my baseline guide logs like Brian suggested.

Hello Rick,
That is good to hear.
In the beginning I had issues with my G11G Gemini2. They were all my own issues with communicating with the Gemini hand controler.
Between Michael Herman, Brian Velente, and Chip Louie, they got me going in right direction. I have been quiet on on this forum for some time now, that all is working right with my mount. Brian, is probably relieved that he has not heard from me in over a month now LOL...?

HAPPY SKIES AND " KEEP LOOKING UP"?

Since so many people often post with questions and problems, I just wanted to say I another night of stellar performance from my G11 last night! 4 hours of the Eastern Veil with incredibly good guidance performance (<0.30).

Love this mount!

Re: SAO on G2

If you are using a laptop connected to your mount, you could use a Planetarium Program, , and set it up (Telescope Control) and it can take your mount to any place in your field of view.

I'm so use to using Stellarium, I typically just go-to my objects with it. Hunt them up, and slew to the coordinate.
But you can just use Stellarium to browse around and get locations.

Then press the spacebar key to center that in Stellarium.? Then press CTL-1 to go-to that location on the mount.??

See the attached PDF for how you can connect these programs to a Gemini.??

(I have only G1, as the document discusses, but G2 has serial and other methods available too.? I use Stellarium-scope, a separate program that connects Gemini.net to Stellarium, but Chip mentioned the latest Stellarium versions don't need that.)

Stellarium has many other catalogs you can add in, say for asteroids, etc.? And it has the ability to show the field of view of your camera, or eyepiece.??

Re: SAO on G2

It's possible to add catalogs to your hand controller, there's some information here.?

CAUTION: i've visited this page before without problems, but google is reporting malware on this site, so proceed at your own risk:?

Re: SAO on G2

I'm not sure if you want more computers in the loop, but if you do you could get a stellarmate and give goto commands using skysafari on your mobile device. That way you could slew to just about any object imaginable.

Re: SAO on G2

eric

I've had this (mount hits limit and won't move) happen a couple of times and for some reason the handset refuses to work.? So I just hit park at CWD and my mount parks.? I test the limits after the park and everything works.? Gremlins.?

Two questions:
1. Like a lot of you, I'm interested in testing double star limits and, thanks to Sonny's very helpful "Tonight's Sky" suggestion, I drew up a brief observing list for last night. However, when I? went to the SAO tab and typed in the SAO number, the Gemini 2 couldn't recognize it. I tried this on a few other stars, including the very recognizable Epsilon 2 Lyr. What am I doing wrong here?

2. Speaking of limits, I hit my Dec (I think) limit and I couldn't get out of it until I shut the system off and cold re-started it. I haven't properly studied "limits" yet (my fault) and I made a hash of things on a night of incredible transparency up here in the north country. I'm planning to re-model tonight, trusting that a cold start will erase my mistakes. Would that life were like that. Anyway, if I encounter this again I'd like some guidance in re establishing the use of the G2 without losing three hours worth of the computer's "learned" input.

Re: SAO on G2

Michael is correct. There are no Dec limits only ra

Re: SAO on G2

Hi Erik,

Only the RA has limits...none on DEC.
You set these...see the attached PDF.

You should be able to slew the RA away from the limit, and free up the Gemini to work as it should.??

Try it in daylight...!

Best,
Michael

That was the other side of the coin. Scott has helped engineer out the need for biasing. Little to no backlash to begin with, yet the worm can reliably compensate for any run out of the gearing.

BTW, I got Scott's DUP14 bar with my mount to improve my entire OTA, so my weight went up. For the better, much more strength and rigidity.

Imagine a vertical plane passing through your mount and North and South poles. A wall. Anything on the east side of that wall should be slightly heavier than anything on the west side. When your OTA is on the west side of the wall, the counterweight should be slightly heavier. When the OTA is on the east side, then the OTA should be slightly heavier.

Some have devised a simple pulley system with a small hanging weight in order to automatically apply it to either side of the mount. You can also move a small magnetic weight when switching sides. Or, you can just not worry about it, if it's not causing you any problems! :)
Thanks Paul,
Makes sense now. And I have seen the pulleys counterweight systems some use.
I think a lot of the reason I've gotten away with as near balanced RA and Dec so far is because my OTA is so light compared to the capacities my mounts have had.
And of late, the spring loaded worms of the Losmandy mount.
My defunct mount being 30# capacity with a 13.1# OTA; and now the GM811G with a 50# rating and 15.4# OTA, or ~ 3.24 to one weight ratio. Pretty slim resistance to these mounts.
(I've always had more mount capacity than OTA weight.)

So basically, have a tiny bit more weight toward the counterweight side of the RA. If I read it right.
