Just to be clear, I did not mean to say that there is anything wrong with this.? There always will be some play in the axes in order to not bind up.? This happened to my AVX one time, and I had to send it back to Celestron for repair!?
What matters mostly is that before and after the transient the tracks are regular, and that is the case - very regular (which is why I bought a Losmandy, after all).? During the transient I would lose a few frames but DSS solves that automatically.? After the transient I would need to adjust the PA.? The bright star in the image is Polaris, which is about 40" from the NCP so looking at the picture I would say the jump in RA axis is about 2" to 4".? Maybe the autoguider can compensate for it. I am just curious if anyone has made similar observations or can confirm that this is normal. |
RA axis stability test
As part of my polar alignment procedure I put the G11S mount in the home position with the scope pointed at the NCP with a camera at 6400 ISO at prime focus.? I then rotate around the RA axis, mark the center of rotation on the camera's LCD screen, then adjust the Alt/Az axes until the NCP coincides with that point.? I use 3 second shots for that and an asterism close to the NCP.
As I was rotating around RA from East to West, starting slightly East, ending slightly West, I noticed a significant discontinuity.? See the attached image.? Clearly there is some flexibility or slop, possibly increased by a slight imbalance.? I used a 21 lbs. counterweight for my 127 mm Apo, I could not get it close enough for a perfect balance but good enough for a reasonable balance, I think.? I adjusted the worms by shimming both of them against the frame such that the EQStar motors would not bind up.? Without shimming it is impossible to adjust the worms properly, I found.? I checked if there was any play by moving both axes.? If there is play it is usually pretty clear.? I did not find any.? Still, this does not mean that there is no movement.? As I wiggle the counterweight axis to check for play in RA, for instance, the scope wiggles nicely as if it were on a spring. This must be caused by a combination of the various mechanical parts - some play in the crown wheel, some play in the axis, if they were 100% tight nothing would move.? I always observe this spring-like vibration no matter how tight the worms are. So what I think is happening is that as the axis is moving from East to West the counterweight bar is vertical at some point.? The center of mass is toward the counterweight, so while initially the counterweight is pushing, after it gets vertical it is being pushed and is pushing the other way itself.? That explains the bump in the center of the tracks.? IMHO this is caused by play in the RA axis.? If you push the counterweight East, the RA axis will be tilted East (bottom) / West (top).? If you push it the other way it will be tilted West (bottom) / East (top).? The more play there is in the RA axis, the more tilting, the bigger the bump. The good news is that before and after the transition the trails are nicely round.? The bad news is that the center of rotation seems to have moved (which makes total sense after what I just explained).? So if I started with a good PA, after it goes through zenith the PA will be significantly off. Have any of you done such tests, and is there a way in which I can tighten the RA axis?? This looks worse than my AVX. |

Cold Start unresponsive
I just completed the initial setup of the Gemini on my new G811. I shut it off and then later turned the system back on. I tried touching Cold Start and nothing happened. After a few more tries the screen changed languages (German in case anyone's interested). Nothing happened here, either. I rebooted a few more times with the same results. Up to this point everything seemed to be working perfectly. So WTF?

Not sure what all you are trying to power on Brian but recently I started using the Kasa wifi power strip over home wifi:
Each outlet can be controlled by a button on the phone app, but haven't set it up for desktop/laptop yet (and am not sure how to do so). Since I have multiple AC powered adapters for mount, camera, dew heater, etc. I can turn each one on or off at will.? |

The significant difference between TCP and UDP is guaranteed in order delivery of TCP.? if a UDP packet is lost on the network... it is not resent.? the string of UDP packets continue.. Also UDP packets can be delivered out of order (this seldom happens). TCP is a stream of data... if an IP packet is lost, the receiving side recognizes that data is missing and requests that it be retransmitted.? This takes time and the stream pauses until the missing data is available at the receiver. So for something like a video stream... UDP data is the best.. most people would not even notice a single lost frame... but with TCP the video stream stops until the lost packet is recovered.? This is why there needs to be buffering for TCP.? But while a video stream can tolerate lost data,? you would not want a file transfer system to utilize UDP... you want the file received to be complete and in the right order. From a data transfer perspective, the two are roughly equal.? MIke.?? |

What about the typical 'Restore on power loss ==> Power On' setting that is in most bios's ? I use that to auto power up my (genuine) NUC after plugging it in... Otherwise, remote power control device such as WebControl's WebSwitch product provides inexpensive remote browser power control... ? |

OK, so I was advised to replace the battery on my Gemini II, and found the replacement instructions to be pretty scary.?
"Also After replacing the battery, Power on the Gemini-2 and set the time and date. Failure to do so could cause the processor to draw too much power from the battery and might result in processor damage." This looks to be a pretty old site, is there a better set of instructions for this?? Jamie |
